I'm with Kim. In the summer, you are on empty at 1/4 tank. In winter, you're out at half tank. Get gas before you get to those levels. Will not be stuck in the cold with no heat, or in the heat with no air. Also, always fill up on your way home, never on your way out. 🥰✌️

When the put that hiss in? That's when I knew this is real, and he was the idiot that gambles with range. The computer estimate is conservative for a reason. So it never overestimates, and to give you that hard nudge. Too many times when I was a starving student I had to drop in in neutral to coast, or very barely make it. Nope. working from home. Lol - I WAS a Penn until a few years ago. We had a 100 year flood. I had 1/8 tank of gas and only 1 gas station between me and home - 12 miles away. Work sent everyone home early and I got to the gas station, where the line grew SO FAST. Took me 5.5 hours to get home - the few roads that were still open looked like parking lots. I had to let go of Penn that day and travel to the other side, where every tank is at least half full.

Team Kim. Never ever let your gas get below 1/4 tank. There are carburetor demons in that last quarter and they will gunk up your engine for fun. Plus, I live out in the boonies and we don't have a gas tank on every corner. Heck, we don't even have corners.
@machinist7230

Worse - most cars today have an in tank electric fuel pump, that is cooled by the fuel it's sitting in. You dramatically shorten the life of the pump when it is exposed to air. So try to never let it get below a quarter tank.

Nothing truer on the internet 🤣 I'm definitly Penn! My husband did the long-distance thing for 4 years. I was in LA and he was in Phoenix, so we would drive that route all the time. Gas is WAY more expensive in CA than it is in AZ (like 30+ c/gallon more), so I always made it my goal to roll into the first AZ gas station on empty. One time I almost cut it too close- the low fuel light turned on with easily 30-35 miles left to go... AT NIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT. My grandpa always said "you've got 30 miles easy!" when that light came on, so I just crossed my fingers and thought of him 🤣 Thankfully, he was right, and I was able to roll into AZ on fumes and fill up with that glorious, cheap gas 😁

She was doing what I do. She was probably basing it on her odometer. Example: if she's at 300 miles and the car can go to 350 typically, then you have 50 miles. If I'm at 325 in my car, I know I have 14 miles to get gas because I have a gallon in the tank. 😂 I haven't run out of gas, but I have coasted in if I'm really close.

20-year master mechanic from Michigan here. The gas warning light comes on between 2-5 gallons left, depending on the manufacturer. See the owners manual. When the gauge reads "E," that is the bottom that the vehicle can physically read the volume of fuel left in the tank. I've seen some vehicles come in with a gauge below the E. This is actually a fault with the measurement in the component called the "fuel level sending unit." There is a reserve, but at most, it's a quart. Love your videos, thanks.

I friggin LOVE IT when I hit an even number when filling up gas. Mostly because it helps my crow brain when I budget. Bonus points when the even number also matches an "as even as you can get" number of gallons, too. I get really nervous when the tank starts getting low (I've let the light come on) because growing up in cold weather, you don't want it to get below a quarter of a tank. This is so funny because I am both of you! I always get gas before I'm on E and I love being past F and getting even $$ on the pump. I clean out the inside of my car at the gas station but sometimes I just toss the stuff. I never want to wash the outside of my car so I am always waiting for Nature's car wash. I love to put in the addresses for GPS but frequently ignore the voice guidance corrections and go off "the grid". I have been known to drive with multiple warning lights on but I try to stay on top of those " oil change" stickers "low tire air pressure lights. So I guess I have a split- personality!

well, factor in that whole scene on home improvement where jill taylor tells tim taylor that when the 'check engine' light comes on she's all: 'i thought it was just a warning... and... i thought it would {eventually} just become more frequent or get louder..' that whole scene is supposed to be a diss on women, based on the fact that 'we' don't concern ourselves with potential mechanical failures. in reality, ignoring engine warning signs is about hubris. or ignorance. or laziness. it's funny how men weigh heavily on the side of 'just wait: it's bait'. not trying to flame at all or at all and this has been a fun thread...

Hilarious! I am in the in-between category. Most of the time, I fill up between 1/4 tank and empty. Sometimes, I push the envelope. The one time I ran out of gas in my life was last year. The close call was on a recent trip when I didn't pay attention or hear the reminder, and I was frantically searching for a gas station with my sleeping child in the car. I found one, and I'll never do that again.

I actually read my manual. Light comes on and the car indicates 35 miles left. Manual says once indicator says 0, there is a gallon left in the tank, which means another 30 miles. In my area, that's one or two more trips, one of those to the gas station.

I'm that rare in-between. I do a lot of long road trips where sometimes it's a couple hundred miles between gas stations, or where I'm passing through small towns where the gas stations close at night, and on those trips I never let it get to a quarter-tank. But when I'm driving in my city and I know there's a gas station every half mile, I don't bother to get gas until the light comes on.

One reason not to let your tank get too empty is that the fuel pump is electric. It typically sits in the tank and is cooled by the gasoline surrounding it. Running the car on fumes lets the pump get too warm and shortens its life. Changing out the fuel pump often involves draining and dropping the fuel tank--a PITA for the mechanic (especially if that mechanic is you!) and a huge labor bill.
@fhen01
@fhen01 Жыл бұрын
Fuel pumps tend to fail when tank is full… Why? Well, because of the abuse it went through getting you to that pump without enough liquid to keep it cool.

I'm the middler!! I hate letting my tank get below a quarter tank because it's "bad for the engine" and I'll totally start looking for a gas station immediately. I also fill up before cold weather or sitting for a long time so condensation doesn't build. At the same time, if I'm in a hurry and running late, and/or there isn't a gas station on my route, I will absolutely risk it, and you definitely can get two more errands in on a quarter tank, and the 30 miles on the empty light is for sure correct.

I totally agree that when computer says 30 miles, its more like 50 or so, I know every time car shows for example 150km and you hit the reserve in 10km it starts saying 70 - 80km, I know last time I had a rental car through one app and it showed me 38km, but just hit the reserve and I need to go to specific brand of gas station (as I paid for km and not for a gas) and it was 55km, but this small car was doing 5 - 5,5 liters per 100km and reserve was 5 liter, got to gas station, filled up and there were 3 liter left. Its not good to go on empty, but when I hit 1/4 a tank I know I have at least 150 - 200km in my car for sure. So will just stop when I have time.

The low fuel light is there to prevent the fuel pump in the fuel tank from premature failure due to cavitation. Having the fuel pump replaced is an expensive repair. So it may be fun to see how far one can go once the low fuel light is on, it is DEFINATELY not good for your vehicle. The time you save not stopping for gas will be eaten up taking your vehicle to the shop and waiting to get it back. Meanwhile...the video is hilarious, good job. Go Kim!!

Both my wife and I fill up before 1/4 tank but my car is far more likely to be clean inside. In my case that's probably because my parents were both Marines and they both kept their cars immaculate. What's unique about us is that we've been married 14 years and she has physically put gas in a vehicle at most five times in 14 years. I or someone else have done every other fill up in that time. She now insists she's forgotten how to put gas in a car and that I always need to do it.

I have been both people in my life. 😂 The tank light comes on at different points in for each vehicle but you can look it up for your own. My reserve is around 35 miles after the light turns on. I used to have a manual and totally used the mountains to coast nearly double the amount I should've been able to drive. More than one occasion I should've been stranded but was able to just barely make it in. Now I have 3 kids and live in a harsh winter climate so I try not to get to a quarter tank. My husband has always been the type to fill at half a tank.

I am with Penn, well almost, on this one. Family trip from Minnesota to Ohio in the minivan with kids and I wanted to make good time with as few stops as necessary. I would wait for the light to come on and within the next 5-10 miles look for a gas station. I agree, you do lose a lot of time at the gas pump, especially since we get it at Costco. It's usually a 10-15 minute wait each time. I don't eat much while driving, but as a kid growing up on the farm, I always have a few tools and supplies in the trunk. I do like having the rubber floor mats so when I feel like cleaning out, I just take them out, dump the trash, hose them down and back in they go. Twice a year.... However, I don't try to run it to the absolute last mile. Cars today have the gas pump inside the gas tank. The fuel helps keep the pump temp cooler, so when you get down to the last drop, you run the risk of it burning out. I had to replace a pump on my 96 Volvo a few years ago and the pump cost over $200. It was likely due to old age. Luckily it was an easy job that I Had no problem doing it myself. I would hate to find out what a repair shop would charge.

In 2003, I was in Toronto. The blackout happened when I was with a friend downtown. For those who don't remember the blackout affected a good portion of the NE USA and Ontario. If you don't have enough gas in the tank, you aren't going to get it filled up at a gas station. Saw so many cars at the gas station that were mid fill-up and couldn't leave because they couldn't pay or still didn't have enough gas in the tank. Gas pumps work on electricity so people who were low on gas didn't have a way to fill up or get home. Busses were still somewhat working. If they still had enough diesel in them. I managed to get back to the hotel because the GO busses were still working. My brother and I were supposed to get a drive to the airport but my Bro in Law doesn't keep the car filled up so again we had to take the GO bus to the airport. Wife and I always have the mind set that the car should always be in a state that it can be usable in any emergency. We live in an earthquake zone so if, heaven forbid, there is an earthquake or whatever catastrophe and we have to get out of dodge, we should be able to. We were lucky in Toronto that it was during warm weather. I'm sure some people in Texas that had the power outages in the cold snap they had 2 years back which caused weeks of no power were probably cursing that their truck/car was running on empty.

I'm Team Kim, and so is my husband. We will fill up at half a tank. Back in 1986, we were stationed in Germany with the Army. We had a used beater car that the gas gauge only worked from full to half full, and after that it was a guessing game on how much gas was in the tank because the needle was stuck at half. We lived about an hour away from the Army base, and one time my husband had an overnight duty (it started on a Saturday morning and went until 5am Sunday morning) and he forgot to fill up the tank before starting work. He had enough gas to make home on Sunday morning at 6am, but I had to drive a friend back to the Army base to start work at 7am. I made it to the base, but the on base gas station did not open until 9am on Sunday, so I knew there was a German Esso station that opened at 730am just under 10km down the road heading in the direction I needed to go to get back home. Well I made it about 5km and ran out of gas. Also it was in the winter, and there really wasn't anyone out driving around that early on a Sunday morning. I was sitting on the side of the road, freezing cold and crying, not knowing what to do. We didn't have cellphones back then, and it was on the outskirts of town. I didn't even have a gas can that I could have used, even if I had walked the 5km to the gas station. Luckily for me, an older German gentleman stopped to help me. He didn't speak English, and I didn't speak German, but he gave me a ride to the gas station, bought a gas can and filled it with a few gallons of gas, then drove me back to my car and put the gas into the tank. He then followed me all the way to the gas station to make sure I made it safely. I was able to fill the tank, and once I got back home an hour later, I really let my husband have it LOL From that point on, once our car got to half a tank, we have always filled it up.
