I’m very interested to see who ends up being the main audience for this car. I think it’s super cool and appreciate how much they’re pushing the boundaries, it I see issues for potential owners. Owners who live in an urban environment likely will have problems with limited sunlight because they’re parking in parking garages or on roads with tall buildings. Owners that are more rural might have longer commutes so range anxiety might be an issue. Like I said, I think it’s really cool tech, but plugging in my current EV is so easy that I’m not really sure what issue this car is “solving” for me. But maybe I’m just so obviously not the target audience that I can’t understand.

@@SaveMoneySavethePlanet About 40% of people in the USA, old city home owners and renters, condo and apartment dwellers mostly, don't have dedicated parking spots for their cars. That's a big market right there. Even in open shade you'd be recharging your Aptera, slowly. Charging at home, on the road, while shopping and at work. And if you need more than the Sun has to give, plugging it in will give you twice the miles per minute of any other EV. (Well, except for eBikes.)
@SaveMoneySavethePlanet
@SaveMoneySavethePlanet 2 жыл бұрын
@@fotoguru222 fair enough, I could see where that may be the case. I do however rent in a city and don’t have the ability to plug in every night as a result. The thing that’s enabled me to have an EV is that my city has pushed hard to install lots of charging stations all over the place. So I can drop my car off to charge and then go back to my apartment and live my life for 4 hours while I wait. Maybe Aptera tech will remove that need, but I’m not sure I have enough of an ability to park in direct sunlight. It’ll be interesting to see sales launch and see what the practical results are from the first round of owners!

@@SaveMoneySavethePlanet IMHO the audience will differ. Some will want it for their daily commute, others for shopping and doing errands around town. It'd also make for a great vehicle for medium to small deliveries. But, in my case, I drive a lot for my job. Every other week I drive across several states. With the camper package I will not need to worry about lodging *kaching!* and also even if I drive across 4 states and stay there for an week I will have enough juice to drive back without ever having stopped to plug it in. If my drive is a several day drive and I would need to plug her in, which I have about 2x/year, this vehicle charges at such a speedy rate that I will have more than enough juice (at a rate of up to 500 miles per hour of charge!). So, I could simply plug it in during nature breaks with no time wasted. And, at a federal mileage reimbursement rate of about 53 cents per mile then this basically becomes more than a free vehicle, but one that actually pays you back! Plus it will be fun. I also plat to take it into the woods and use it for camping for fun. For that I have also selected the Off-Road Package. It really helps alleviate range anxiety. So, for me, it's not only practical and functional for what I need, I will also enjoy it for personal use. But this is just me. Everyone else will have a different motive.

Here in California there are also curious regulatory wrinkles to this it seems--are they likely to crop up in other markets (if those topics are possible to address without diluting your concept or distracting from DW's comment).

In the UK, for example, theres no problem, as long as they mainly charge late evenings through to early morning, which is very doable with cheaper rate electricity incenting users, that is already the go to for most UK EV drivers . (The UK's National Grid has officially stated this) Theres plenty of excess power produced at night indeed theres even the problem of curtailment where they literally pay power plant operators, such as wind farms, to shut down as the grid cant always take that power. Cars would soak that up without any need to pay generators not to produce electricity which is peverse. There will also be a lot of electricity saved by not refining so much fossil fuels, that uses a lot of electricity ..

I absolutely love this concept, I don't think the solar would work so well here in a UK winter, but it'd still add something especially if you don't use it every day, I think small efficient cars just make so much sense for commuting as a 1.5 ton car to move a 80kg driver is worse payload than a lot of rockets! I really hope this comes to the UK and Europe

You are so right - and I would add from my point of view: If you live in the countryside and work mostly home office, this car would be OK almost everywhere and anytime - without any charging. Even the half range, 20 miles a day would then probably be enough to transport f.e. a child somewhere, to visit friends at their homes or at a pub, see a doctor/dentist and to do some shopping once a week or twice a month. 100-150 miles per week seems perfect to me...

It's really not hard to install a 240 volt outlet. A lot of people already have one in their garage or elsewhere for large electric appliances. The national grid authority (I forgot their exact name) in the UK has done an analysis of the effect on the grid of the transition to EVs. Their takehome message was "not a problem". People mostly charge at night when demand is the lowest. As the transition gets closer to 100%, they'll need some added capacity, but that's years out and well within their capability.

I had a ride in the 3rd alpha prototype, Luna. (the silver one) The Engineer driving took me through twisties at speed. She cornered flat, but was harsh on the bumps and there were clunks on potholes. Raush Performance has completely redone the suspension, adding a sway bar in the front and replacing the rear swing arm with a dual link. I hear the betas are much more compliant and even faster through the curves. I still expect the experience to be sports car like rather than econobox.

As long as you don't mind black, one of the projects I'm working on is mixing a carbon TEG material that can double as paint. Bonded to a carbon composite substrate, the applications like body paint that also charges is very exciting. Once we get batteries way, way down in weight, the savings that trickle down to all the other systems compound efficiency like you wouldn't believe. I like where this project (the Aptera that is) could go and that Cd is fantastic. Personally I'd lower the profile and the way the suspension is packaged, but that's just the way my brain works.

@justjohnny05
@justjohnny05 2 жыл бұрын
the reason I watched this is because the title is "why this car NEVER needs refueling!" which you didnt cover at all! why this is true in most scenarios is 1. it doesnt take "fuel" so no no gas. getting to the point it has several battery and solar panel combinations to choose from the larger the battery the more range and the more solar the more recharging. The key here is something you didnt mention you have to drive and or park the car in the sun the whole time the sun is out where you can get from 20 to 40 miles of charge per day now obviously if you drive less than that a day the sun has you covered but the battery can hold up to 1000 miles of charge so even if on some or most days you drive more than 40 miles you still have that large battery to cover your mileage the trick is if there are a couple of days a week that you DONT drive it then it will catch up on recharging and you have the ability to fully recharge back to its max mileage range. now there are going to be those that will say well what about shade? what about cloudy days, and yes that can reduce the solar charge maybe 10 to 20% max reason being when you go out side on a cloudy day or in the shade ask your self is it the same amount of light as night time NO its much much brighter its always way brighter at daytime than night and ironically if you park under a bright streetlight it can even get a lil bit of charge then too. so this is why you dont really need to RECHARGE it.

I had a ride in the Luna (silver) prototype before Thanksgiving. Yes, in the alpha prototypes the ride is sportscar like and there is a lot of suspension noise. There are many changes already made in the betas they are testing now, including a much more compliant and quieter suspension. Along with making it smoother and quieter, they have also further improved the handling, and these are going to be a LOT of fun to drive- especially measured against any previous "economy" car.

Our kids choose CS over the mindless garbage that their peers absorb and are building surprisingly broad knowledge forests (as Elon Musk calls it). My wife and I love to watch it as well. As for the Aptera - a friend of mine has ordered his for Australia and we can't wait to check it out. For us, we would have to wait for a 4 door version. One thought arises - I would imagine the car would do well to trade a little lateral stability for safety and collision avoidance by narrowing the front track width. Those front wheels are going to get a hard time in the real world I think. Thanks for the vid! Cheers from Sydney - Dave

Aptera is designed to operate in temperature conditions from -20 to 125 F. It has windshield wipers, AC and heating. Validation testing to insure this kind of performance is going on now with the betas. It also has perhaps the best traction control and ABS yet fitted to any vehicle - each driven wheel can sense wheel slip and adjust torque 32 times per wheel revolution - or about every 2.5" of tread travel. I expect to be able to do all season travel with mine in Iowa. I may add studded snow tires for the winter season, which are legal here.
