Dude she really poured herself into that family. Getting brother a job. Babysitting for free whenever they needed her. And she can’t even apologize for how shitty she acted towards her? Poor Sammy. She’s done nothing but be amazing towards this family and I have no doubts that she’s never done anything truly annoying and they just have such deep seeded fatphobia. Unfortunately my inlaw family can be like this where they will complain to my husband about a slew of random things I have done expecting him to scold me and put me in my place. He tells me about it and takes my side but he does complain its a lot of stress on him to deal with their moaning the whole time. We are looking to move far enough away from them that its inconvenient for them to visit us the whole time and critisize us. Complaints include 1. "oh she didnt say hello to us when she came over" when I did but they kept talking over and ignoring me nor do they ever say hello to me btw. Now I speak really loudly and repeat myself till they respond to me. 2. "You arnt cutting your daughters food small enough and she should be using a fork/spoon." My daughter is 1 1/2 if I cut her food she stuffs all the peices in her mouth and chokes I know this from experience and have explained that leaving food whole forces her to slow down and bit off pieces. Plus shes not even 2 yet she should be using her fingers to eat sometimes she does ask for a spoon sometimes so she knows how to use one. 3. Comments that my husbands car and our house are not clean enough to their standards and when are we going to stop being lazy and get around to cleaning. My husband works long hours and still needs to drive an hour to work and back and I am 7 months pregnant and have an energetic toddler to deal with so frankly we cant be bothered with a few toys on the floor. We would clean before they come but they will just rock up with no warning.

This made me so teary! I can’t imagine how terrible that made her feel, knowing the family she grew to love didn’t feel the same. But her boyfriend is a keeper. That is exactly what a life partnership should be like, and I love that he had the sense to distinguish right from wrong and have her back, despite the fact it would damage his relationship with his family. If they continue their relationship like that, I think they’ll have a very happy, supportive marriage.

This one hit close to home as someone who recently had her marriage “unblessed” by her MIL this weekend before my wedding.. I’ve never been good enough for her, (comments about my weight and health conditions, looks etc.) I hope that some day we can work things out because I hate the tension and don’t want a toxic relationship but I have nothing to prove to her. She’s had the same comments about me for 5 years (ex. why marry someone with a chronic illness, they’ll just be a burden to you down the road.) and the hurt is going to take time to heal.

Wowww!!! That’s absolutely horrible!! She sounds like a nightmare and like someone you don’t even need in your lives… I’m getting married in June and there was so much family drama at my engagement party I’m just waiting for the shit storm to happen at or before my wedding. I’m kind of dreading it actually. I totally sympathize!! I really hope your fiancé/ husband sticks up for you because it speaks volumes if he doesn’t! 💜💜💜

My MIL never approved of me. In fact, she hated me before she even met me because my now husband wanted to spend some holidays with me and my family instead of them (he was living with his dad at the time so I only met his dad and step mom). She felt as if I was taking her son away from her. She was always a little snotty when it came to talking to me or about me. No one agreed with her and her comments, and I was surprisingly welcomed from his whole family. Even being two years married, she still gives me nasty looks when we share a recliner chair... it sucks, I wish she would've liked me or even gotten to know me, but it is what it is. I'm happy with my husband and that's all I need. That's all you'll need too. I hope you have a wonderful wedding filled with love. You will heal, even if slowly ❤

@@chelseamcfarland6170 I’m thankful because he has always put her in her place when she brings me up. She’s very ableist and he’s called her out for it several times. He’s considered cutting her off a few times, but somehow she’ll calm down for a bit and we end up here again. I hate to see him in a rocky relationship with his mother so there’s a part of me that wants them to make up, but it’s going to be a long time before I can ever “accept her” as my MIL. We had a courthouse wedding this last week (because of covid ruining our plans) which she didn’t attend so luckily no drama there. I've gotta say Sammy is a far better person than I could ever be. I'm fat and have been all my life. I have family members that treated me shitty when I was a kid because of my weight and honestly I have avoided them in adulthood. If I was dating someone who's extended family made me believe they loved and accepted me only to catch them talking shit about me behind my back--not because I was bitchy, or too loud when I drank too much, or because I was selfish or gossipy BUT BECAUSE I WAS OVERWEIGHT???? Yeah, I'd have to seriously consider if I wanted to marry OP and tie myself (and our future children) to his horrible family for the rest of my life.

Blood is thicker than water is only the partial saying. It's so odd how it's been flipped on its head to colloquially mean the exact opposite.

I'm glad that OP sees the good in his GF so at least not everyone is toxic and at least she can still trust OP ... This family is garbage... and the fact that she still handed the present and didn't throw them away made my heart break... this Girl is so cute and I hope one day the family might see her in the same way OP sees her: as the pretty, talented, wonderful woman that she is 🥺♥️ Edit: I'm also glad OP isn't one of those men who put their mom's/dad's/sisters etc over his partner and I'm glad he didn't play it down like "they didn't mean it that way... don't overreact... blablabla" but who's able to see the bad things his family did! His Girlfriend really has his back and that's amazing! Edit 2: The dad is the only person who seems truly sorry because already at the table he said they shouldn't talk like that about her and he apologized in person for his behavior... if I was in that situation he might be the only person I would trust again and he would be the only person who's apologies I'd take seriously

I hate that Sammy had to go through this, but it’s good she and OP heard it and knew the truth about this family and what they’re capable of. Had a super similar experience with a childhood best friend. We had known each other since we were 3. In high school, i gained a lot of weight while depressed. On our annual family camping trip, I overheard her talking to the other girls our age about how fat I was, how “embarrassing it was to be friends with me”, that I should “step on a scale once in a while”, and that I really should be wearing a one piece bathing suit. It was a really hard hit to trust and self-esteem, even though I knew those thoughts were only in her head because of the shitty friends she hung out with. Our entire senior year of high school I didn’t talk to her, if she wanted to choose them over a life-long friend, that’s her choice and I couldn’t stop her. I didn’t get a genuine apology from her until right before she left for college. We spent our last week of summer together talking things out and beginning to repair the friendship. I’m so happy she decided to ditch those trashy friends that manipulated her in so many ways, and I’m happy I was able to get over my anger and give her another chance. We both changed for the better for each other. Our relationship changed of course, but I think now that we’re in our 20s it’s matured a lot and she’ll continue to be a friend worth having (:
