This is exactly the video I've been searching for in reference to my street setup. Dave Moss is great at what he does, but you have more effectively and thoroughly communicated in one video what I couldn't retain from the bits and pieces I could gather from his numerous clips. I think you have made his videos more understandable and enjoyable foe me. More importantly I feel like I can tackle the job myself with confidence. This is the way.

I learned a lot from this video. I thought my MT-09 felt pretty good but wanted to try to improve that nasty brake dive and the bounciness on the rear. I had no idea how bad it was until I set everything correctly. What a difference. It’s soooo much more planted at higher speeds now, it’s great, thanks!

I just bought new MT09 from dealer, on the road back to home, notice the suspension react to road bumps was so bad, like old car that need replace struts. Followed your procedure, did all adjustments, then test drive. Man, it is day and night difference, now drive it feels like drive a new car. Thank you so much!

Thank you (again) for the suspension video!!! That information is priceless! My bike is so much better and safer through curves, stops/braking and especially general riding altogether. I currently weigh about 30 lbs more than you (down from an enormous 348lbs) and still eating healthy small portions and losing weight fast, so I’ll probably be readjusting it again soon. The tremendous difference of before (off the showroom floor) and after, can only be described as purely epic. Maybe one day I will upgrade the suspension, but the stock suspension on the 2018 is very good, I just need that Yamaha Comfort Seat. Talked to my dealer and it’ll be here in 4 days. So happy with this bike. The fun is truly limitless!

Bought a 2022 MT09 and followed this video while setting up my suspension. Let me just say the difference is astounding the bike now settles into corners better the feel and control on the road it is night and day. Thanks for a great video for a newb like me.

I have the same color FZ-09 and pretty much the same mods with just a couple exceptions (Penske DC rear shock and front forks). This video was the best I have seen in setting the suspension and helped me dial it in for the Fz. Ride strong and ride safe!

I have a Tracer900, and this videó helped me to adjust the suspension to my weight. I am not a fast driver, but with this modification, it makes a huge difference.

Very clear, and a pleasure to watch. Thanks. Just one point -- adjusting front end sag (with rider), you say you were looking for 3.8 inches (70%) left showing on the forks. Doesn't that assume that the bottom of the visible slider is the end of the actual travel? i.e. it assumes that if you measured the whole of the visible slider with nil sag, it would equal the manufacturer's stated wheel travel? Is that assumption right? Maybe, but . . . just a thought. Very nice video, anyhow.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. Bought a Speed Twin this year and over the winter months I'm installing a fully adjustable suspension front and rear and will be back to this video multiple times for the setup instructions.

Very detailed…I imagine itll take me (anyone new to this ) a lil bit of trial and error till I’m able to feel the differences during set up. Also imagine I’ll have to rewatch a few Times till (& while doin )I’ve done it enough Where it just makes sense step-by-step ….was always afraid to make any of these type of adjustments back in the day, as I was afraid I’d screw things up. Have a similar bike and followed his instructions. Made a huge improvement! Like he said keep an open end and screwdriver in your pocket find a windy road with some bumps and stop adjust ride over and over to get it just right. For my Tracer 900 GT from factory settings i wound up increasing preload, front and rear. Increasing compression in the front and reducing or screwing in rebound front and rear.

I really like that you've shown things with all preload out, all dampening out, etc - really nice to see that versus when you have it set. This is a WELL done video. Long time fan, really appreciate you doing this one in particular.

Know that the fork's full travel end at the bottom is not all the way down to the very bottom of the inner tube's mating line at the outer housing. The end of its bottom travel will be a few mm's above the very bottom. This is in part so the seal does not ever slam into the bottom housing of the fork's outer black lower part on the bike you are showing. On one of my bikes this gap is 7 mm that the fork can never go down to. So it's full travel range stops at the bottom 7 mm above the fork's bottom foot. This can be determined by raising the front of the bilke so the wheel(s) are off the ground. Then the forks will be fully extended so you can now measuring from the fork seal all the way down to the out black part at the bottom. This measurement will be slightly longer than the full fork, wheel travel listed in the manual. The difference is the never used length of the inner fork. Also for springs as in the fork preload you start counting it fully up. Meaning #0 position is fully out upwards. Then to add tension, preload you turn down, clock wise, CW, inward. This is the opposite to counting the position for compression and rebound. Most manuals with describe this. Most amateurs do this wrong.

Really nice video! But there's a big mistake! You consider the exposed part of the fork like the total travel, but it is not! You should completely extend the fork lifting the tire from the ground and put an adhesive tape at the distance of the total travel indicated on the manual, measuring from the dust seal. This will be for sure some millimeters higher than the calipers casting. That's the limit of the travel of the forks! Sorry for my bad english, i hope to have been clear enough. 😉✌️

The reason I feel that way is because I have never seen an aftermarket pipe that looks integrated with the bike's look. But you mentioned that the aftermarket pipe is much lighter, and from what I remember from my old physics class, that would raise the center of gravity of the bike, which may be a detriment to the bike's performance. But then u are the one who can tell us if it is true or not, or even noticeable.

For me it looked like rebound in front could not handle spring even at fully closed. It was still bounsing. I guess that shows sheap suspension at action. For skinny riders this could still work.

Hey Brian, I have a question on the rear sag adjustment. For that adjustment I would think you would need to take all the weight off the rear and take an initial measurement. From that you would want to deduct the 30% to get the static + rider adjustment. Adjusting based on that total would leave 70% of the total wheel travel accounting for bike, bags, gear and rider. You are doing this for the front, since you have the ability to measure directly off the forks the 70% remaining. By taking the 1.5” off the static sag, you miss the change in wheel travel that has occurred by loading with bags, trunks, etc. Am I thinking about that correctly?

Wow one of the best suspension set ups videos I've seen...Very well explained.....Anyone remotely interested in setting their own bike up for the street needs to digest this information. Byran just one slight confusion please put me right if you read this comment. You said the FZ09 only had rebound damping on the rear but when you were pushing down on the rear with full damping you said it felt harder to push down and im thinking that only compression damping would make it harder to push down? Please correct me if im wrong. Im a new subscriber will be looking at your other videos for sure.

Very good video , clear and very simply put , one thing i will say the fork's are fully adjustable and having comp in fork and rebound in the other is a better way of doing it as the oil only has one job to do in each leg , on forks with comp and rebound in both legs you'll get rebound at top and comp at bottom so it has much more going on inside the fork and doesn't work as well , keeping it separate is a much better design. Thanks for doing this guide. Had very little knowledge on this and turns out my sag was not the same on both sides. I had a slight oscillation in the front at high speed, and after correctly setting the sag and other settings on my XSR900 the oscillation is gone. Thanks again!

I'm a little confused. Why care about sag? The bike will sag when the rider is on it and if so, then that's what we adjust to. As long as we make the numbers with the rider on the bike why care about sag? Or is it that we want to be sure there is some sag? (If not - then what? ) I may have missed it, but what were the settings when you checked sag? default? All out or all in? I will be doing this to my new Z900, but it only has preload and rebound for front and rear. Oddly, it only has one adjustable shock in the front, seems like a bad idea as one shock is doing all the work. GREAT video. Thank you for sharing this.

I’m 270 lbs., my settings were front and rear preload at 5, front Rebound at 10, front Compression at 8, rear Rebound at 1.5, feels really good For my 2018 MT09 new front Compression and Rebound were set at 3, front preload was 3, rear Rebound was .75 and rear preload was 5 brake dive was horrendous and rear super bouncey

Followed it right to the part near the end when you said that the rear was noticeably harder to push down when the rebound damping was at it's max, but why would it be harder to compress the rear? I don't know the specs of the mt09 maybe the rear adjuster is a combined compression and rebound adjuster? Other than that I'm lost why adjusting the rebound would affect compression.

Great vid. I just did suspension on my 2018 FZ09 again (all standard). Funny enough I am the same weight as the guy in the video, so the settings used in the video was good starting point for me. However to get the same 3.9 inches showing at the front I had to go all the way in with the pre-load and I am still getting like 3.8. My guess is that my bike is 2yo now and the oil in the forks must have become thinner and the internal valves must be behaving differently. So even if you had your suspension dialled a while ago, you might want to consider doing it again

The rear was a little confusing my rear was at 5 spot or 2 spots from full spring compression 7 I have the same exact bike as yours and Im 185 no gear on I did get 1.5 inch exact rider sag and front is right on also so will see tomorrow after testing it . thanks for the helpful video ...

I'm learning this for street riding on my DRZ400SM. I'm planning on riding with a passenger and to compensate for the extra weight, should I stiffen up the high and low speed compression? Setting the pre load is a hefty process so should I be fine with just compression adjustment? Also should I just stiffen the rear or the front too? Thanks.

I'm really starting to like that FJR. I think that will be my next bike in ~6-8 years.

I weigh 248lbs. My heavy leather jacket, boots, back protector, leather pants and helmet weight 14lbs. I set my sag with full gear on. One other thing to consider when your bike gets many miles on it, [example] when my 1994 Yamaha FZR 1000[sold at 98k] reached over 50kmiles,I noticed the sag in rear had increased . The spring was starting to wear. Made an adjustment,good again. I also had a Yamaha XT 600 dualsport. At about 60k, the front fork springs got soft to the point the bike was a handful in the dirt.Replaced springs with progressive wound springs. Rode good again.

Factory setting on the like new 2014 fz09 I just bought is like one of those rocking horses on a big spring at the mcdonalds playground back in the day. Thinking the rebound is going to make a big difference

Like many wrote, it was comprehensive and just what I needed. One question though, what would you tune if a passenger sat on the back with luggage? I know rear sag for sure, maybe check front sag.. So rebound has to done again? Any advice would be welcome.

I've had to back the rear preload all the way out to get mine to match. Adjustable forks would have been helpful.

I set my front preload up, it was way out from factory. But then I checked my rear and the travel was bang on. So I'm wondering if I've done the front a bit too much? Maybe I could wind it out a bit then tighten the rear and recheck?
