In this video, Kelly will walk you through the steps to tie the new Belly Bumper Craw that he has been working on over the last year. This was a killer crayfish pattern for us last Spring and Summer and works well when stripped or dead drifted along the bottom.

Kelly is clearly a very knowledgeable and creative fly tyer and fly fisherman. But some of his videos could be better organized.

I really like this pattern and I have a gravel bottom lake where it will work for sure. The crawfish 🦞 there are all reddish brown. I’ve watched trout digging them out of the rocks in 6-8’ of water. I’ve tried Ritt’s Craw and other patterns that just don’t fish well. Thanks Kelly!

I fish a river that I need this to get down in a hurry to depth and mostly fish it dead drift...tight line. You mentioned at the end that you could change the bead for this reason...I was already thinking...have you ever used 2 4.0 or 4.6 beads? Think...tight line/esn in pocket water and 3-5’ depth. Thanks for any thoughts and help you can offer! Already fish a couple craws...but always looking for a better one lol. This might just be it. Love your channel! Always learn a ton.

Kelly I was thinking when you were palmering that wire forward if you split the hair/fur with your bodkin you might not trap so much. I do like the fly. Keep the good stuff coming.

I just tied this and did just that with my bodkin. Was trapping a ton of rabbit and dubbing at first.

As always, great video.You have mentioned fishing this pattern and others streamers(mini dungeon for example) on a dead drift or under an indicator. Would love to hear if you have any specific when/where/why and how you use this method opposed to others.

TheDeathsmarch quite frankly if u r going to fish streamers under an indicator it’s bc the water level is really high and/or the water is cloudy, kind of like when u would fish junk flies like squirmy worms etc. also. Depending on the streamer (wooly bugger for example) they have a lot of action on their own and u can fish them under a strike indicator as a point fly or trailing fly and I have caught manny trout like that. I usually put a la he stonefly nymph as the first fly, then the wooly bugger. Or u can put the wooly nugget first and then a smaller nymph. Grab the fishes attention and then give it what it wants. Just my two cents. Good luck!
