I can't believe the comments are ignoring the fact that that woman's father was still alive. I mean, what kind of monster tells her child "Your father was killed by a white man," just because he left her for another woman? That's so fucked up. Why would you write that into your script and not do anything with it? The mother doesn't get her comeuppance, the daughter doesn't get a reunion with her father, it's just...a batshit crazy line of dialogue that could have(and should have) been taken out of the movie in the first place.

I know I'm replying to a seven year-old comment, but the worst part about Tyler Perry's dramatic side is that he does this all the time- He makes it out like he's setting it up for a future movie, then the character's never seen again. Something like that's just a stinger. He gets pissed when he's called on it, too.

I say this as someone who grew up in a farming household and as a someone who has worked on the farm for several years - TYLER PERRY DOESN'T KNOW JACK ABOUT FARMING! Hell, you don't even have to be a farmer to get that the stuff they spout is stupid! Brad here indicates this perfectly At no point did my Dad or any neighboring farmer ever argue about who got to plant corn that year, you know why? Because there's no way in hell ONE farmer can harvest all the corn that is in demand out there in the world in one area! Hell, my father would probably love the extra help. Also, in very, very, very, very, VERY rare circumstances has my Father (or other farmers) had to continue harvest into December. Most of that time is spent making sure the equipment is stored and ready for next season and other non-harvest tasks!
@SuperSwordman15 жыл бұрын
The only logic I can see behind the corn issue is A) if they only sold locally which would make no sense and clearly isn't happening, or B) Taylor knew crops have to be rotated (I hear esspecially true with corn) to restore the nutrients of the soil. And he somehow thought that the corn drained nutrients from soil it's nowhere near

I've not seen any of the Madea movies, but from what I've read about them, Madea, despite being in the title, is not usually the focus of the main plotline. She functions almost more like a narrator. This is why this film seems to have a lot of sub-plots that don't involve Madea.
@JaiFlame6 жыл бұрын
Joseph Mostarda She’s essentially a mixture of comic relief and hidden sage. People argue that Tyler Perry has the chops to make good dramas, because he does highlight real but uncomfortable topics but lacks focus, can be preachy, relies on cliches, and has too many subplots. The thing is the dramas would be good but they wouldn’t have the reach of Madea because general audiences need a breather, laughter and hope. 30 Rock does an episode about it actually that is the best argument for Madea I’ve ever seen.

Five years late, I know. But originally she is. Unfortunately, because of how poorly Tyler perry’s writing skills have gotten over the years due to ignoring any criticism of any kind since his first movie, Madea has slowly become a very very annoying character.
@cjwrench07 Жыл бұрын
@@Weirdgirl213 Tyler Perry isn’t ignoring all criticism of his movies. You don’t become the *only* N.American market Director, with 10 (or more) theatrical releases, whose movies have ALL made a profit. [ Before the pandemic-released movie Tenet. It was Mr.Perry and Christopher Nolan who shared that record.] Tyler Perry does ignore criticism for his Madea movies, but only those who are outside his target audience: American Women aged 35-55 Pull together a large group of women in that demographic, and you’ll have an audience that mostly enjoys the Madea movie they watched. As an anecdote. My Mother, Aunts, and my Mother’s book club are non-American but in the age group. I know they’ve paid to see every single Madea movie that’s been in the local theatres, and still watch the older ones on streaming services.

And by Christ, it is. The three pull up to the house, Madea does some shtick, honks the horn, and then it cuts to that night scene with a rather sorrowful version of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" playing and then smash cuts back. It is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in a mainstream film. How could an editor fuck up that badly? How did no one notice this before releasing it? And why does IMDb have absolutely nothing about it? Not even in the *Goofs* section where it properly belongs!

You also cut off Brian when you showed the Midnight Screening video. Normally I wouldn't mention this, but you do reference some of the things you didn't show.

Sooo, Madea is a charicature of a caricature? I didn't watch those movies but I think I'm getting what is wrong with them: the characters don't have "human like" qualities to balance their caricatural attributes, and when they're being horrible the movie doesn't call them out on their flaws and despicable behavior. Also, like you mentioned, people just act out of character just because the third act is ending in 15 minutes, when nothing justifies the brutal 180° shift change in their personalities. Ace Ventura is nothing great, but it's genuinely funny because despite Carrey's character being a weirdo an a total loser(he even calls himself a loser in a brief moment lucidity and depression) he feels and act human! Why those movies don't treat their characters as human beings and make them as shallow as their humor is beyond me!

I didn't know that Madea movies weren't liked that much. I thought they were pretty good and I can understand whats going on pretty easily. The most trouble I ever had with these movies is remembering who is who and that's easily fixed after being use to their face for a while. I was also interested in the fact that they addressed serious issues that people tend to look over or ignore and I felt like they balanced it well with the comedy. Sure not ever joke was funny but to me it felt like that's how it was suppose to be and that it was just the character's personality to find it funny when no one else in the room clearly didn't have the same feelings for it. I also feel like the Cinema Snob skipped over or just plan missed stuff. I'm only five minutes in and I can already notice a few. Madea got the job because she needed one and her friend is the manager (or similar to that position) so she was fine giving her the job. Her friend knew her character so she thought the best area for her to be was one where she didn't have to say much so she gave her positions such as greeting jobs to keep her from saying her mind like she did with the woman wanting sexy underwear. It didn't work out like she hope obviously. Madea's charater is the type of person who believes in doing the right thing but has been through so much in her life that she won't be forced to be quiet and will say her mind. For instance, she use to be in a very brutal relationship but in the end she had too much and stood on her feet and finally left the man. With the teacher and the boy, the entire class was in on making fun of him. Sure the one little girl was the one saying stuff, but everyone still laughed at him as if she was right an that they agreed with her. The teacher called out the other student because though he may not have said anything, he was still involved in the bullying by laughing at him with her. Plus it was someone that was sitting close to the little girl so the teacher didn't call on him to single him out or something like that, it was just because since she had a whole class of bullies to choose from, she went with the first person she directly saw on the side she chose to face her head. The teacher wants the boy to sing in the jubilee even though he is introverted is because she thinks it was the best way for him to boost his confidence and make himself more willing to get to know people. She wasn't telling him to do a solo, just to join the choir of people and in the end he made the decision himself to sing the solo part. The jubilee to the townspeople is a very important event because it's the entire towns tradition and because it holds a deeper meaning. Christmas it's self is a time that's meant a lot to people for hundreds of years, it's even stopped stopped an entire giant war for a short time because people thought it was more important to take a day that means peace and love and keep it that way instead of making that one night a year people all over the world celebrated covered in bloodshed. The town's jubilee is their own way of expressing that because it feels like a time when despite all arguments or disputes people are having, they can set that aside for at least a little while and be a part of something everyone considers heartfelt and beautiful. Tyler Perry is very religious so he try's to portray things that show a similar way of feeling while making it so it's not like he's shoving religion down people's throats or even coming off as religious. The movies he makes aren't about being religious per-say but being a good person. They try to take more than one side into account like how people see woman who are being abused vs. how the woman in the relationship is being treated. For instance, how some wouldn't notice anything, or notice something but either not realize what it is or just ignore it, or straight up knowing about it but not doing anything about it or thinking, "well you should leave him then" while on the other side you can see the abused character and see how hard it can be to be in that situation. Another is how racism can happen on more than one side and in what way. There are a lot of things about this movie and other Madea movie that I've noticed people have ignored. I won't say you have to like the movie now an that you're all wrong or anything. I'm not someone who thinks they know everything and is right and is trying to make people feel wrong, I just wanted to right down how I see it and how I felt about the movie. One of the things I look for in a movie is character development, but I for more than just it being directly said or shown, but by the little things that tell more than what people are saying. Although I don't blame people if they don't notice anything. To be honest I'm usually the only one so I'm getting use to it. Believe me I understand that it might be stupid to think that way and I try not to but I know I must at least be getting what I say and feel somewhat right about this stuff because I've had plenty of times when I'm around people and we're watching a movie or listening to a song when they say something they found wrong with it that I had a reason for being that way and telling them, only for them to take a minute to take it in and agree with me after. They may still dislike it or end up liking it but they still saw it from another angle and come up to the conclusion themselves. I apologize for this comment being so long, I just need to get how I feel off my chest or it will be in my head all day (Not that I want it to, my brain unfortunately just works that way). I'm sorry if this all sound stupid either way, but please, if you have anything against what I'm saying, please write it down in a way that's not yelling at me for being stupid or anything like that. It's okay if you feel that way, it's just easier to calmly address it you know?

Madea is the unfunniest character I have ever seen. It's amazing. Every Madea movie might as well be Tyler Perry shooting a clown. Make it a little easier to understand what this character does to the concept of comedy.

It's weird that Tyler Perry simultaneously characterizes Madea as a short-tempered, ax-crazy, borderline psychopath, yet also at various points in the movies tries to portray her as the voice of reason. He does realize it takes more than just having her act differently depending on the scene to get us to find a character like that believable/likeable, right?

@WTKB828 жыл бұрын
+princesstamika Hollywood didn't make these films, number 1. Tyler Perry does his own thing as he always does, Hollywood has never been his friend. He has his own studio.... Secondly, no. For some reason there are substantially more white people who enjoy TP than there are black people. Black people stopped supporting Tyler years ago (I could go on a huge rant about this. Tyler even addressed) and so what he does is market his films to white people. Hence the cast of this film and his more recent ones. The people who paid money to go see this film and actively gave it positive reviews, I will bet my life, are predominantly white. Tyler Perry plays in the early days were the height of his career in the black community, when his first few movies came out, he was a big hit with the black community. But then somewhere along the line, from the combined results of his movies being fairly easy to get off the street, and his movies not really offering much but the same old same old, black people really stopped caring. That won't ever stop white people from saying "Black people love madea movies! Black people love tyler perry, he's like their favorite writer" because...well...white people look at black people as some kind of collective. But as I always say madea is to black people what larry the cable guy is to white people. Think about that. Let that sink in. Then you'll get it.

Honestly, I have to say Madea is a pretty insufferable movie compared to some of the movies Snob has reviewed. And that is saying a lot, I'd probably take Salo over this movie. The Madea movies are pure, utter garbage, always hated them. Unfunny, painful, and its audience is made up of the kind of people who wouldn't know what a good movie is unless it mentions "Jesus" in it 10,000,000,000 times.
@101919278 жыл бұрын
+Crazyprincessariel I've noticed, I have a few idiot co-workers who think the Madea movies are good, and they fit exactly what you describe. And what's sad, one of the guys I know even acknowledged that it was a poorly made movie, but the Madea character reminded him of people he knew growing up in the ghetto. What ghetto he grew up in I have no idea, but that's about the kind of reach it has to the audience, pretty limited. All Tyler Perry did was copy off Eddie Murphy and the Ernest movies, that's about it. Everything is painfully unoriginal, and comes off very cheap, and very poor all around. Plus I hate Tyler Perrys other shows and dramas on tv, so much garbage from one man.
@101919278 жыл бұрын
+Crazyprincessariel His movies and shows have a very limited appeal overall, it's almost like the Madea movies are kind of underground, but not in a good way. Although Tyler Perry might be a decent guy in real life, he comes off extremely hacky and desperate trying to make the Madea character work, but it's clear it doesn't and comes off as pretentious since we're supposed to be learning life lessons from Madea and she is good for is shouting and wise cracking jokes.

My grandmother loves these films--she'll sit there choking with laughter. She's also very religious, but couldn't understand why I shouted "Holy shit!" when Madea crucified that little girl. It was an infuriating movie to watch, and the scene where they argue while a truck burns in the background was my breaking point. My grandmother is also eagerly awaiting the film where Madea gets pregnant.

Tyler Perry has a way of dropping bombshells and then not explaining them. In this one, Laci finds out her dad is still alive but doesn’t react whatsoever. In ‘Madea’s Big Happy Family’ there’s an incest subplot that nobody ever acknowledges again. It’s worse in the plays but the films are a close contender
