According to Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokemon, Ultraman and his capsule kaiju were a HUGE inspiration to him, which led to the creation of Pokemon. As such, there are a load of references to Ultraman, Godzilla, Gamera, the Super Sentai and other such big Japanese television series throughout the Pokemon franchise. In this video we talk about that! Kaiju Pokemon! and how Tyranitar is NOT based on Godzilla like everybody says.

Why do they need gmax forms when them being dynamaxed is still perfect for the reference? If part of their design was it, then them just being bigger completes it. If they added more it would take away from the design's original intent.

Here's a small nitpick I wanna correct. Ultraman and Godzilla were co-created by a lot of the same people, especially the legendary creator of the tokutatsu genre: Eiji Tsuburaya. But they are not owned by the same company. Tsuburaya doesn't own the rights to Godzilla like Gnoggin (or however the little skeleton is named) said. Toho owns Godzilla and Tsuburaya Productions owns Ultraman. Both companies do have really close working relationships, to the point they let each other borrow kaiju suits all the time. Because of that there's a lot of Ultraman Kaiju who just look like repainted versions of Godzilla Kaiju. It's most likely that Toho let Tsuburaya use their Kaiju's roar as well. So yeah, it's not that Godzilla & Ultraman are owned by the same people, but that both companies have good working relationships and let each other borrow stuff all the time. (Mainly because some people like Eiji Tsuburaya has worked for Toho before)

Speaking of the Anime, Dialga's roars in the DP Era has the roars of Kraa the Sea Monster & Manda, also Palkia's roars despite having Ghidorah and Godzilla's roars also have a cayote howl. Giratina & Lunala has the same roars as Mothra's but Giratina has both the Imago and Larva roars and Lunala only has the Imago Roars. BW: Reshiram combines the Roars of Megaguirus, Keizer Ghidorah & the Wolf's howl while Baragon's roars were used for Zekrom. Kyurem's roars being Monster X and Zilla (AKA the TriStar Godzilla) combined with his Japanese VA and in the dub Marc Thompson (who voices the Tao Trio). XY: Yveltal has the roars of Megaguirus & Anguirus (Pitched-up) and Zygarde in its 50% form has the roars of Mothra and the other Kaiju noises. SM: Solagleo has the roars of Monster X like Kyurem and Necrozma has another kaiju roar. The Dusk Mane form has the roars of Ebirah and a Cayote Howl. The Dusk Wing form has a Cayote howl. Necrozma in its TRUE form has the combo of Ebirah's roar, GMK Ghidorah's roar, and a lowpitched Cayote howl. JN: Eternatus has the roars of Ebirah and another beast. Zapdos has Mothra's Roars (Imago), and Articuno has the roars of many kaijus. Plus Dialga has the same roar as Necrozma in JN89 and JN90. POSTED: 2:59 PM EST Saturday December 10th 2022.

The most notable thing about Tyranitar, in my opinion, is that it is a classical dinosaurish kaiju that reaches its adult phase by PUPATING. Even weirder is that the shape and markings of the pupa are visible on its body, implying that the pupa itself mutated into an adult phase, rather than breaking like an insect's. That is such a strange, unique, and fundamental quality that I find it difficult to really consider it as having any one single inspiration unless said inspiration also does that.

The single-word translation of "kaiju" should just be "monster", big or small. As a huge Godzilla fan, I was always dissapointed with Tyranitar's design. It just doesn't scream "Godzilla" to me so I like the idea of it being *also* inspired by Bemular from Ultraman. It explains a lot about Tyranitar. But I like how you mentioned that Pokémon can be inspired by several things. There's just too much obvious Godzilla influence in Tyranitar to ignore it and say it's just a Bemular Pokémon. Since both Godzilla & Ultraman are super iconic in Japan, it makes sense that Game Freak decided to mix both franchises into one Pokémon.

So fun thing about Mega Tyranitar; I'm pretty sure it's more based on Burning Godzilla from Godzilla vs Destoroyah Ultra Sun Dex Entry: Due to the colossal power poured into it, this Pokémon’s back split right open. Its destructive instincts are the only thing keeping it moving. Considering Burning Godzilla is literally melting down due to his own power and will die in a radioactive explosion with the only thing keeping him alive is just his will to live a bit longer and the fact that Mega Tyranitar own power is so great that it splits open its back, meaning it will die soon . . . yeah. I feel the inspiration there.

Lovely lovely, yet I am heavily breathing multiple times at some misinfo here... Excuse my nerdness as I list out a couple FYI-stuff down with no annotations. Plus some fine ol comments on stuff mixed in. Bemular was never caught by Ultraman, he was killed just like the majority of the kaiju that appear in the series. Ahem, Toho and Tsuburaya technically only worked together for like the early Showa series of both franchises, Eiji Tsuburaya can at least be credited for bringing suitmation with the 1954 film. The God of the Earth title for Baragon was only given to the GMK instance of him, plus GMK was release in 2001, waay after Gen 1. Connection to Baragon still fits thought. Angross, not really classical, appeared in the middle of the Heisei era. Those are just flippers on Gazort cause the thing is a space fish-thing. Oh heck, Golem really is just a rocky version of Takkong. Fun Fact, Takkong's name comes from the Japanese word for octopus: "Tako" And like Pestar, drinks oil in the original appearance. Space Eel, that's all you have to see from Eleking. Also.... yeah, Ultraman did do a lot of gore on the monsters, especially with Ace's series, the ultra has multiple finishers that have the word Guillotine in i- Wait is that why Guillotine in pokemon 1-shots 50s to around 70s toys in japan were always so saturated. Sudden idea I got looking between Bemular and Tyranitar, or in this case, Pupitar. Bemular has the special ability to change into a big, blue, space-travelling orb. Which sorta mirrors the chrysalis Pupitar, blue color, shell-like. Tsuburaya has been making a couple Godzilla-look-a-likes a couple of times. Apart from Bemular and Redking using Big-G's roar, there's Astron (or Earthtron, depends on translation) who has a similar appearance. Gomess and Jirass are a thing, both of which reused two Godzilla suits (or mixed pieces iirc), Jirass is just a green Godzilla with a frill. That clip with Yveltal didn't feature Megaguirus' roar. Reminder, high-pitched screech. Also, I think the best pronunciation of Megaguirus is "Meg-a-gear-us", well, for me anyway. The relation with Mothra for Gigantamax Butterfree may be for 2019 version, where... Oh look both have BIG GLOWING GREEN WINGS! Though it may be argued to be a coincidence, both were released in 2019. Done. I dunno.

I realize there a couple more mistakes I missed, and instead of editing my comment, I'm just gonna extend the list with a reply, cause there's like comment character limit. Big G is not a mutated lizard, that'd be the dead horse that is Zilla. Godzilla is either a naturally born creature that fed on radiation and awakened via Bomb tests. Or is a mutation, just that it was a dinosaur called the Godzillasaurus, which might not be true since some timetravel removed it, and Godzilla still exists. Shoutout to Wikizilla, they have theory on explaining this. Otachi is not a sea monstah, she too is from space, and is, like the rest of the Rim monstahs, artificial weapons. Speaking of, most, if not many kaiju come from the land, especially from the Monsterverse and Ultraman franchise. Rodan, either way, was sleeping in a mountain or a volcano, Golza and Melba too. Monsters like Redking and Kong (who does count) lived on a remote island along with their opponents. Poor Gomora was taking a nap in a mountain. Among others. The categories for Kaiju are usually as follows: Aliens: space ninja's and Dadas. Space monsters: in two subcategories, but basically they are not sentient, but are still from space. Ancient: living for a long time on land, Gomora and Kong. Gods: Mothra and Gatanothor. Sea: ancient but water, Goji and Takkong. Weapons: all the artificial guys, Mecha Godzilla, Zetton and Pandon. Ghosts: undead, ghost that possesses Kiryu, and the hybrid Tyrant. Interdimensional: not exactly from space, Gan-Q and Bulton comes to mind.

"Hydreigon" may seem a lot like "Hydrogen," but there are no connections to it breathing fire aside from its moveset, and it's obviously not even a Fire-Type. Dragons can do more than just breathe fire, anyway, and Hydreigon just obviously has far more to do with dragons than breathing fire.

I feel the amount you got wrong does a great disservice to the legitimate impact of Ultramam on the Japanese entertainment industry. Most of all being that Ultraman was NOT made by the same people as Godzilla. Yes, Eiji Tsuburaya, the creator of Ultraman, was the special effects director for years at Toho, but by the time he started the Ultraman franchise he'd stepped down and started his own company. True, there was industry trading, but that was mostly due to the amazing admiration Tsuburaya had in the industry. After his death in 1970, Tsuburaya Productions became a fully separate company and continued to create the MANY different incarnations of Ultraman which would become a staple of Japanese television. He is not a superhero, there are a bunch of sparsely connected different series with some overarching lore (convoluted at best). Point being, even a show about a giant, spandex clad, superhero is never as simple as it seems. Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai are not the the same thing.

Ultras are all light beings who protect the universe from monsters and villains so that's kinda like a super hero. The space garrison is basically like space cops. and they are all connected by the land of light. Even those not from that place (like Jonius being from U40). Ambassador Magma was the first giant hero, big X was the first giant hero who used a pen-like object to transform like Ultraman's beta capsule. Tezuka beats every one at being first at something. They are all toku though

Rayquaza is Shenron confirmed XDDD (Not really but here's my theory lmao) Rayquaza: Green dragon, fix resolves. Mega evolves by "receiving wishes/prayers" Shenron: Green dragon who grants wishes, to fix resolves. Shenquaza, The green dragon who grants wishes, the more wishes he grants the more his form changes. In its spare time it prevents issues between Kygoku and Vegroudon. So basically. I just fused the franchises and didnt realise :P

Hardcore kaiju fan here, so a small tidbit to point out; Baragon's "god of the earth" idea didn't come until the 2001 film Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (GMK for short, quite the long name), AFTER Pokemon was already made and established. However Baragon did of course appear in older films (and did burrow as well iirc) so the design for Nidoking is still blatantly obvious. Edit: ALSO GODZILLA IS NOT A MUTATED LIZARD! The 1998 American Godzilla film is the ONLY one to do that idea. The original 1954 Gojira has Godzilla as a giant prehistoric animal risen from the depths of the ocean due to atomic bomb testing to make man pay for the crimes of nuclear energy. EDIT #2: YVELTAL'S ROAR WAS NOT MEGAGUIRUS' REEEEEE
