In this video I am forging a Spartan sword from the movie 300! This is my take on Leonidas' sword from the movie which is a Greek Kopis sword with a 108 layer random Damascus pattern with double fullers on each side, mild steel guards and a bronze wire wrap handle.

If you run a torch slowly down the length of that twisted wire and get it good and hot as you go along, it will relax and lose that springiness it gets from the twisting. It makes it a lot easier to work with.

Beautiful sword and my personal favorite sword pattern. The Damascus pattern is mind blowing, just amazing. Great work! I've been planning to make a similar sword, modeled after the one used by the character Ahmad Sanjar from the Turkish TV series Uyanis Buyuk Selcuklu. He was Sultan of the Seljuk Turks about the same time period when Troy fell. I'm glad I watched your video, so I'll have a headstart on the process! Next time you use twisted wire for a handle, try annealing the wire before you twist it, then anneal it again before you wrap the handle. If you start the twist with freshly annealed wire, it won't try to untwist itself. You'll need to polish it after you finish wrapping, but the whole process will go more easily with soft wire!

@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 2 жыл бұрын
I know that sounds impressive, but you really don't see a pattern in that many layers. It just looks like a blurry fingerprint because the pattern is too fine. The sweet spot is really between 100 and 400 layers where you get the good contrast. Thanks for watching, Lee!

Swords just mean larger areas to grind and heat treat. I have a forge and oven that fits knives but not swords so it certainly has its challenges. Thanks for watching.

What is the purpose of the kerosine? isn't there a chance the liquid would go between the billets and when burned leave residue or something?
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 2 жыл бұрын
You want the kerosene to seep between the layers. When it burns off it does leave a residue that prevents scale. It doesn’t affect the layers from forge welding. Thanks for watching, Joe.

I don’t know squat about swords, I’m a former jarhead who used rifles. That said, I feel if I was to go into a fight with an edged weapon, the spartan sword seems like the one I’d choose. Light weight, built well, seems balanced, it’s obvious an “up close weapon, but what sword isn’t. If I’m wrong, I’d be curious to hear why.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Жыл бұрын
I'm totally with you on that. While a longsword or katana is a nice sword, it just doesn't have the power and umph that this one does. This one is a chopper but still lightweight enough to easily control. It's just a fun weapon to wield. There's a reason this is one of the very few builds I won't sell. 😉. Thanks for watching, Brian!

This may be a nitpick, but won’t the copper on the handle green with oxidation? And won’t it turn the users palm green as well?
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks Жыл бұрын
This actually isn't pure copper wire, its just coated. If it was, I'd just coat the handle in a thin layer of clear enamel so it wouldn't oxidize. Thanks for watching.

What does soaking it in kerosine before heating do?
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 3 жыл бұрын
The kerosene burns off and so does all the oxygen. It supposed to create an oxygen free area in all the seams to get a better weld, or so the theory goes. 👍

That beval transition must have been a nightmare and you barely touched on it in the video, is this because you felt it would be boring due to the excessive hand sanding required? I ask because I'm intrigued to know how you tackled that and kept it even on both sides, even WITH a sanding jig it must have been a challenge, no?
