The plan was good the failure here is a bizarre lack of intelligence. Euron was received by Cerci (AND the court) well before Danny and co sailed for Westeros. In OPEN COURT in the main freaking audience chamber! How is it possible varys hadn't heard about it? You mean to tell me that varys can know what Ned wispers to Petyr in private in a hookers bedroom, 5 minutes after Ned whispers it, but a super famous ultra pirate docks in kings landing and presents himself to palace, meets with queen and says shocking stuff, proposes to her, and commits to saling to essos to r@pe danny, and this is said midday thru day at lunch. Yep, just do a night attack, asap, while Jaime is away attacking Highgarden, before Cersei can muster any more forces like the Golden Company, and before Qyburn can build more than a handful of Scorpions. Ferry the Dothraki and Unsullied to the coast, a couple miles away from Kings Landing, and send a portion of Dothraki to fan around the city to block any escape. Then Dany should use the dragons to blast a few holes in the walls, that her troops can charge through. Then while her troops secure the main city, she flies up to the Red Keep, blows through the gate so her army can get through, blasts the castle, and hopefully kills Cersei. If not, Dany's army will be able to enter the castle and find her, and if she tries to escape through the hidden tunnels, the Dothraki around the city will probably catch her. This would inevitably result in some civilian casualties, but nothing excessive (at least compared to setting off a ton of wildfire like Cersei already did), and its probably better than starving the city slowly. And the moment the city is taken, she could start shipping food from the Reach in, making her popular. From there, she has the Reach and Dorne on her side backing her already, take the Stormlands to link them up to KL (maybe still give it Gendry later), get the Riverlands onside by restoring the Tullys. She then controls most of southern Westeros. She could make the same offer she actually did to Jon, she'll fight for the North, if he bends the knee, which gets the North and Vale. That only leaves the Westerlands and the Iron Islands. At that point, they could use Tyrion's plan to take Casterly Rock, with the help of the Dragons. If Cersei somehow escaped KL, kill her, and either offer amnesty and Lordship of the Rock to Jaime if he surrenders, or possibly send him to the Wall. Then she can deal with the Iron Islands and Euron, who'll be out of allies.

I agree, because if you think about it. The night king wouldn’t of been able to cross the wall. Because Dany would of had all her three dragons. And she could of still taken Kings Landing without burning it to the ground. She actually would of been still against it and just make the people surrounded to her.

They had Varys who spent decades mapping every secret passage and tunnel in and out of the city and King's Landing. They would easily be able to infiltrate the city capture Cersei and the Red Keep, and then throw open the gates. Securing the city in one fell swoop.

The Dorne thread was always poorly written, but the idea that Dorne so venerated Oberyn Martell that they would follow his brother and nephew's murder with 100% loyalty just seems crazy. As for who could represent Dorne? House Dayne, Uller, or Yronwood to name a few. Or apparently in this story's end, another Prince of Martell

The plan is based around long term stability over a quick victory. If they just take kings landing they don't prove anything except they have a large army. If they besiege it and take casterly rock in a multi front attack they show they are clever and have a large army. Lords will realize this isn't just the mad king 2.0 but someone who is actually intelligent

If u were out of resources what would be your first move, obviously try to take high garden which has the most abundant resources in the 7 kingdoms. Who the Fuk cares about casterly rock! And to sail the Dornish back was a crazy idea too. Why would u sail pass the very kingdom your at war against. Kings landing is between dragon stone and Dorn, just ridiculous. Pisses me off every time i watch that scene. Dany should of had the unsullied protect High Garden or at least 1 dragon. Send a raven to dorn to get the Dornish army to rendezvous somewhere or attack Kings landing from the south, so many options..

They could've taken the city in a day. Send one dragon in, burn down the Red Keep killing Cersei inside and then siege the city. Tyrion's plan was horrible. Why Dany keeps him as her hand after the season is just plot convenience at this point.

People are judging Tyrion based on information we have as the audience but he doesn't. Tyrion does not know of Casterly Rock's gold mines are empty, or Euron has allied with the Lannisters.

@@thegreatpage5912 In any instance Tyrion could have made more a rounded up plan if he had more information. I think that the person that really failed here was Varys since he didn't know neither about the Iron Fleet or that Casterly Rock was worthless at that point.

I disagree this was just a terrible plan despite Tyrion not knowing Euron was allied with Cersei and the trap Jaime laid out leaving Casterly Rock with just 1,000 men while the bulk of the Lannister and Tarly forces marched to Highgarden. Think about it, Dany's fleet would have to sail around the continent to get to Casterly Rock. All this does is give Cersei more time to prepare for the siege of King's Landing and she had more time to build anti dragon weapons. The no brainer here is to attack King's Landing from Dragonstone right there with her full army and fleet plus 3 dragons. Dany could even split up her forces since she has a large enough army to attack the walls from land. They would have to land let's say somewhere in the Stormlands and then march to KL while the rest of her fleet does a Stannis like attack. Varys also knows secret passageways where 20 unsullied can sneak in to open the gates. The capital would have fallen in a day. This was just stupid by Tyrion and even back then first watching I was like yeah; I think attacking now makes more sense for the reasons I just mentioned.

No it was a terrible plan because you're basically planning for prolonged conflict. Who on earth plans for a lengthy foreign invasion. You're in enemy territory with limited resources, a different climate and questionable reinforcements. The aim should be to complete the objective as quickly as possible. The fact that nobody questions the logic of it all is bad writing

It is a terrible battle plan to not predict that your enemy will acquire more allies. It was a terrible battle plan because there was gold in Casterly Rock, but his initial attack plan didn’t stop it from leaving while even Danry’s late attack in it nearly did intercept it. So somehow they knew where he was going to initially think to attack, and reacted to it and he had no idea how they’d defend or react to his attempts. That’s called bad war planning. The Battle of Blackwater Bay’s strategy made sense plot wise, the “subversion” by seasons 7 and 8 made no sense tactically.

I mean, tyrion using wildfire in the battle of blackwater bay only burned the soldiers or men who aligned with Stannis on his fleet, not citizens of kingslanding

She doesn't even need dragon fire. Just do it the old fashioned way. She didn't need her Dragons in Meereen and Yunkai. KL has ~5k garrison, you have 100K+ men....use them.

Or Dany could've just burn the casterly rock instead of king's landing. Then burn the iron fleet with yara and dornish army before laying siege to the capital

But if Dany attacked King's Landing by surprise and captured it in a day or two, then the whole thing is almost over before people across the rest of Westeros even realise whats going on, especially if she captures or kills Cersei during the attack. By that point, the pro Lannister won't really have anyone to rally around (except possibly Jaime, but thats a stretch), and Dany will be sitting on the Iron Throne, with 3 dragons, a massive army and already several of the Great Houses backing her.

S7 and S8 honestly make more sense if one reads it as Tyrion trying to sabotage Dany and keep the Iron Throne in Lannister hands. The advice he gives Dany is so consistently, tremendously bad. How could Dany possibly win the war without killing any of her enemies while her enemies were free to kill Dany's armies, her allies and her dragons? And why would Dany, who previously was *extremely* competent at waging war, go along with any of this?

That's why they made the Casterly Rock plan (the richest region on the continent as far as anyone knows). If the unsullied takes the Rock they cut off the Lannisters greatest asset their wealth. However, Tyrion does not know Casterly Rock's gold mines have run dry (Cersei does).
