ABOUT: Welcome to my KZfaq channel dedicated to lesser-known & forgotten board games. This is still a very small channel trying to build an audience who appreciates these hidden gems and older games. If you want to go on this journey to discover the undiscovered, please subscribe to the channel, share our content, and consider a small donation to help us grow.
EPISODE 34: Ships & Shores & Shifting Scores features one of Martin Wallace's earliest game designs. This game was never even released in English, and although it's over 20 years old, the gameplay still holds up today. Tyros is basically a territory building & expanding type of game with a very unique scoring system. Players build out neutral empires throughout the game, and then scramble to have cities in the biggest empires by the end. That fluid layout and how it affects your decisions is what fascinates me most about Tyros, but when you add in the cardplay, the player interaction, and the "grind-it-out" old-school nature of the game, there is so much to love about this little gem!

RULES CLARIFICATIONS
1. Gray cards are wild. They can be used in any combination with any other colors.
2. The question I posed at the end of the video was answered by a couple kind folks in the comments below. See "pinned" comment. You can only move your own ship, never an opponent's ship.

Regarding your rule question: The German text is "DER SPIELER MUSS GENAU SO VIELE KARTEN ABGEBEN, WIE SEIN SCHIFF FELDER WEIT ZIEHT"... means in English: "The player must discard as many cards as HIS ship will move" ... So, he is limited to his own ships and is not allowed to move other ships. In addtion: thanks for the clear explaination video. The funny thing for me is, I found the game yesterday far back on my shelf. No glue, that I actually owned it, Brand new... and was checking here on this channel to understand the rules .. and than I found this brand new video .. I think thats fools luck and funny. Great job in this video and thanks

You just summed up the entire reason I created this channel! Thanks so much for the kind words. I do this out of love and passion for the hobby I used to know, which is becoming dwarfed by the modern hobby of fancy Kickstarters and FOMO for the next big thing. I understand that is the way of the world, but I just don't want these old games to be forgotten. I truly LOVE discovering hidden treasures like this and sharing them with the world. Thanks for joining in the fun! Happy to have you!

@@undiscovered_games awesome! Secondly, what I love is that I’ve been playing Euro games since around 2006, and have been deep into the hobby ever since. Still-I don’t recognize 80% of the games you cover; these are true hidden gems!

This looks great!!! I have not played many Martin Wallace games but I liked Brass Lancashire way more than Birmingham. I guess I never knew Brass Lancashire was originally called Brass. It was cool to see the old game box at the end of your video! I can't believe I never knew that. Aside from the awesome games you feature, I have learned so much other random boardgame stuff from your videos! I am going to see if I can find a copy of Tyros right now!

Very cool! I also prefer Lancashire over Birmingham (although I like the original best because the beige board is a lot easier for me to see what is going on in the game). The Roxley versions are nice, no doubt, but the OG Brass is all I need! It's interesting: everyone I talk to almost always prefers Lancashire, yet BGG has Birmingham at #1. I am not sure what that means, but I find it interesting. Thanks for the comment. Let me know how you like Tyros!!!

I do love area control games, and this looks like a really good one. I agree, the manipulation of the empire tokens and how they affect scoring is very exciting. I'm pretty sure the only Wallace game I currently own is The Arrival. It's one I picked up recently second hand. I haven't played it yet, but the card system is what intrigued me enough to get it. Automobile is another game of his I would like to try one day if only because I grew up in the Detroit area.

I’ve wanted Automobile for many years but haven’t had a chance to try it yet! I love the look of that one! Wallace has so many great games. I’ve loved Brass for a long time, but only recently have I started checking out some of his other games. The Arrival is one I haven’t played either! Gonna have to check it out! Thanks for watching!

My game came with two different contradicting English rules. Probably why I didn't like it when I played it years ago. I replayed it last night using your teach and enjoyed it much better.

Thanks for the kind words! I was considering something like that. 🤔 The main reason I haven’t done that yet is because I like to keep each episode a surprise, so I don’t want to reveal too many games yet… But maybe once I get a few more episodes under my belt, I can do something like that. 😊 Thanks for watching!

I always said these older Wallace games all have one weird rule. He loved his wone weird rule, so that explains the Tyros space. You might be interested in another older game of his called Pericles it's fantastic.

That’s an interesting observation and I can totally see it now that you mention it. I have a couple others of his I’m saving for future episodes, but I might have to add Pericles to that list! I must be odd or something. I see reviews like this on older games with simple production values and I immediately get excited and head to bgg to find a used copy. Yet 95% of new games seem dull to me. I picked this one up and an older game Cheops today. Does Cheops with the scarab jelly beans look like an undiscovered game to you? Great video, always enjoy your thoughts on games!

It’s refreshing to find so many people still get excited about these so-called “ugly” games. I love ‘em! Cheops looks like a perfect game to feature here!! I’ve never played, but oddly enough someone else recently recommended that to me! It’s on my watch list for sure. You might see a vid on that in the future!! Thanks for watching & commenting.
