This song was recorded in Los Angeles, the night of the American Music Awards in 1985. Only one person skipped out on the awards ceremony to record his vocal parts for the first chorus and rough vocal tracks: Michael Jackson. Steve Perry was the first to walk into the recording studio while Michael was in the middle of layering the chorus arrangement. Steve's first comment on seeing Michael there: "Am I dreaming?" If you like this song, being the 2nd of the 3 released for the same reason, you should do reactions to "Do They Know it's Christmas?" by Band Aid (the British contribution to the effort) and "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights (Canada's contribution, which I think is a much better song).

@@minty_Joe this song war recorded to help the victims of a famine in ethiopia in the 80's, a true act of kindness, the money made with this song was supposed to go to feed the people of ethiopia, that was way back then when the artists use their art to bring the peoples together, live aids was the same kind of things. we really need more of those kinds of things.

"Please check your egos at the door." True words, yet not many artists ever asserted their egos during that time. Probably the only exception was Waylon Jennings, who took offense to singing the chorus in Swahili.

@@mcm0324 Prince called Lionel and asked if he could perform in a separate room (because Prince had a personal beef with MJ; especially after the James Brown, MJ and Prince onstage incident). Lionel couldn't make it happen and really wanted Prince to be a part of this moment, but it wasn't to be. Lionel said, "I'll call you later" (after the recording sessions), and that was that.

Very true, unfortunately there's a large number of very "sensitive" little hearts amongst our "woke" crowds of poisonalities today. This wouldn't happen today because it means many are not in the spotlight. What does Stevie or Ray Charles know about spotlights? Explain red light to them & I'm sure they'd understand. I love Diana Ross & Dionne Warwick. Also Cindy but I wouldn't want to marry her.

There was a television special on how this song was made many years ago and they all came back after an Awards show and spent all night recording . Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson wrote the song and Michael Jackson did a rough demo so they all got an idea of the song . The song went to number 1 everywhere and this was probably not long before live aid a music concert to feed the starving in Africa which also became a big concert. The song USA for Africa would take days to finish but you see the end result.

We Are the World" opens with Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, and Billy Joel singing the first verse.[26] Michael Jackson and Diana Ross follow, completing the first chorus together.[26] Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, and Al Jarreau sing the second verse, before Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, and Daryl Hall go through the second chorus.[26] Co-writer Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Kim Carnes follow with the song's bridge.[26] This structuring of the song is said to "create a sense of continuous surprise and emotional buildup".[4] "We Are the World" concludes with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles singing a full chorus, Wonder and Springsteen duetting, and ad libs from Charles and Ingram.[26]

Apparently there were 46 of the world's most legendary singers. All donated their services free of charge. They raised in excess of $68 million. I would like to know exactly where the money went in Africa after so many talented people donated without cost.

I've watched so many first reactions to this song and just love it. Do we need this now or what? But a few things that make me chuckle almost every time. How excited young ones get recognising Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers. But on flip side legend Bob Dylan gets blank stares. 😃

Thank you for watching this & posting your reaction! I liked it! I'm glad you realize this was VERY SPECIAL!!!! Harry Belafonte was the one who came up with the idea. Michael Jackson & Lionel Richie wrote this song themselves the night before it was recorded. Harry Belafonte, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie got some behind the scenes folks to get people together. Ultimately they got 46 singers to come together to do this charitable project. FORTY SIX recording artists! Plus there were many more musicians from many different bands who came together with their instruments to lend their musical talents - guitars, drums, keyboards, etc. They heard about all the poverty & famine in Africa and learned people were dying and wanted to help!! So more than 55 famous people came together to help. ALL involved came together with NO attitude, NO stipulations, NO demands. They came together out of the goodness of their hearts!!! ALL of the money collected DID go to feed the needy in Africa minus 10% that went to the homeless in America!! AND NO ONE was paid!!!!! THEY ALL DID THIS FOR FREE!!!!!!!! FOR FREE out of the kindness/goodness of their hearts!!!!! So this was in fact SO VERY SPECIAL!!!!!! PLEASE go to Wikipedia and read ALL of the details about how many charts this topped, how many millions of albums were sold, how many millions of dollars were collected and how MANY MANY celebrities participated!!! Then I challenge you to google ALL of the individuals who participated to learn HOW GREAT each of them are/were. And I also challenge you to listen to the music of the ones you don't know. Then after you listen to each of the artists music I challenge you to come back and watch this again with a new reaction!! This was done 40 years ago. I remember it vividly and every time I watch this it brings me to tears. Sadly 8 of the 46 have passed since this was released. RIP to: Ray Charles, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Al Jarreau, June & Anita Pointer. This was a LEGENDARY & EPIC project and it will NEVER NEVER be done again!!!!

This song was crazy popular in the 80's. There were big names that didn't do solo parts but wanted to be a part of this song for the cause of helping to feed the hungry in Africa. In the back, I see Dan Ackroyd and the legendary Harry Belafonte.

MJ wrote it, along with Lionel...It was a massive deal! Raising @ $63 million dollars in 1985. Which would be almost $200 million today ❤..and as far as I can remember it was debuted at the same time all over the world and everyone came out and held hands 😢

You look back in time when the world was helping each other more, and how these wonderful artists came together for a common cause, Then look at the world today. It is sad how the world has declined and how it has become more about the almighty dollar not empathy or compassion.

I was 18 when this came out. It’s a singing extravaganza. They tried to make a difference. It’s a beautiful song. Could you please react to “Danny’s Song” by Loggins & Messina in memory of my husband, Daniel. You young men are the best! Thank you.

I absolutely love your reaction to this masterpiece of a video. All these music legends together for the cause.❤ Sadly I doubt if this will ever be done again in my lifetime. These musicians left their egos at the door and came together. Not so sure some musicians these days could do that. ❤

This was truly an amazing moment. It was actually filmed and recorded in one night. That is why the lyrics are repetitive and you see them looking at their music sheets. It was all new to them. Amazing.

The first airing of this song was played at the same time on radio stations worldwide. Some epic stuff right here. The world will never make music like again, many of the pure artists have joined in the heavens and those alive have retired. Great it was to be an 80's era teenager exposed and molded to this goodness.
