"U.S. lawmakers are trying to regulate TikTok over long-standing alleged national security concerns, but it's unlikely the app is going anywhere anytime soon.
The big picture: Although Washington surprised even TikTok with its accelerated recent attempt to potentially ban the wildly popular video app, the efforts still face hurdles."

They don't give a FLYING CARE what your privacy/data is. Google, when I did takeout, had my voice recorded from 2013 on multiple google voice commands "hey google: info" ... where is the privacy? Congress is nowhere to be found, instead they're found trying to legalize selling your data. Isn't that because US social media won't comply with Chinese laws? Could it be because US companies are required to give US gov back doors & also happily prioritise profit over user well-being / social good? The Chinese culture has a long history of paternalistic attitude & valuing social stability over individual needs & desires. It's not unique to the CPC. Hack, isn't that what Tiger Mom/Dad all about? Would the greedy capitalist US companies comply if the Chinese gov decide to crack down on online behaviours that it deems destablising? You can say if Chinese gov can do it, why not US gov. But the question is will regulations apply to all companies or will there be exemptions for those US companies who pay off the US politicians? BTW, the more educated Chinese do manage to access US social media via VPN. Sure it may not be always reliable, but they're clever enough to play cat & mouse when there's strong enough a desire. There's plenty of content creators here on KZfaq posting from China. As for type of info pushed to the West vs in China - TikTok is a completely separate app from DoYin - the Chinese version. And any successful social media company would know that the algorithm has to be localised to the user's country / market. What interests Americans may not interest Chinese, & vice versa. All of the social media companies aim to get you to spend as much time as possible on their platforms. So if their algorithms deliver the wrong content then you disengage quickly and they lose the reach they need to entice advertisers. What they all tinker with is how to keep you addicted. What TikTok shows me won't be the same as what it shows you because I'd be tuned out immediately if it's just silly adolescent challenges.

Considering that N Korea has proven how easily the US can be taken down, through electronics, and since China IS an adversary, with even better (worse?) ways to take us down, this is an interesting bill. China owns us, our lawmakers have allowed that. Banning TikTok makes sense, but so does banning Temu, banning US companies from doing business with/in China. Boycotting anything linking us to China (or Russia) would make the most sense. But, Americans tend to want coddling, not self discipline and self sacrifice.

@@joewoodchuck3824No we can't. Twitter is owned by a publicly known crazy far-right extremist and facebook has been doing an f-ing ton of fashist stuff lately. It's owned by Meta, which also own Insta, so if you wanna bojcott then, no Insta as well. If TikTok is gone, we're left with the nerdy, hipster Tumblr and Pinterest a lot "cool popular kids" don't use that much so when given the options (no social media/Pinterest/Tumblr) a lot of mainstream young folks will be softly forced on muskrat's dumpster fire or Meta surveilance (yes, they spy on folks and report it to the american govt and racist only have a problem when chinese do the spying, they're perfectly happy when US govt spies on them to enforce their chlerofashist shit like what's been happening after we lost Roe.) Even if the racist bs is real and the Chinese are spying on us, it's not like some random teens know american nuclear secrets. And Chinese can't do shit in america. They can't use any random info against young americans. US govt on the other hand, very well can and has already been doing it with the help of Facebook. This is not about China. This is about making people so scared of China that they would vote for a law that softly forces young folks to use apps that spy for the US govt. It's not big comrade that's watching you, it's big uncle. And he's american and supports chlerofashists and muskrat's wallet.

Yes and no. A "government of, by, and for the people" where "all men are created equal" can only mean democracy. The founding documents outline a _representative_ democracy. There is no conflict between a constitutional republic and a democracy; these are two independent qualities that both describe the US. America's faithfulness to democratic ideals has always been imperfect, however. Because of the nominal independence of the states, there have always been compromises, such as the electoral college and distribution of the Senate, that empower the citizens of less populated states and disenfranchise national majorities at the federal level. There are also mechanisms like gerrymandering that enable (political) minorities to enforce their policies on the majority at a state level. Originally, voting was an exclusive privilege of white men who owned land, and while this is rectified in law today, the aforementioned mechanisms often allow local and state groups to deprive a targeted population of their voting power in practice. Finally, since the supreme court decided that bribes from corporations and billionaires are a form of protected free speech, and modern campaigns are a billion dollar industry, individual voters today have very little influence on policy in practice.

I remember when I first learned that RT was a Russian sponsored channel. There was a lot of stuff on there that I agreed with… but it just left me feeling like America was the worst. Learning it was backed by Russia made a lot of things make sense. TYT often makes me think America is the worst … Whenever TYT has mentioned China, within the last couple years at least, it’s spoken in its defense, even using China’s framing of events.

I'm bout to delete IG. they were already pissing me off with the inescapable ads. 2 ads between every story. an ad every 3 posts on the feed. an ad every 5 posts on someone's page. an automatically refreshing feed to force you to view new ads at the top of the feed, with no way to opt out. insane amounts of suggested users. all people wanted was the chronological feed back and instead they break more functions just to forcefeed you more ads. and they suppress progressive content and promote right wing content, there's barely any point anymore.

@@fractalign Can you not read & do math? "60% OTHER GLOBAL INVESTORS." 60% is greater than a simple majority. 60% is grater than 20% Chinese investors. Now the remaining 20% Employee owners - it's unclear if these are all Chinese or a mixture of Chinese and international employees. But even if these are all Chinese employees, fact remains the majority share - 60% - is owned by GLOBAL investors outside China.

I really don’t care, frame it how you want, the CCP controls the company, if any of those 60 percent attempt to buy them out, the CCP will just override them or buy them up. It’s not about maths it’s about state control.
