*Rory.* Thanks 😊 This was about the Derry massacre and the conflict in Northern Ireland in general. Bono didn't want the song appropriated for either side, and positioned it as a call for peace. (With a few passages from scripture here.) And of course the white flag...against the beat of Larry Mullen's war drum. One of the signature songs that helped propel them to fame, from the album "War."

This song came on the radio the other day. First thing I thought was nobody writes lyrics like this anymore. Nobody is writing music with a meaning like this, the lyrics are deep. No modern artist is being political and writing music with a meaning I know at the time people were saying U2 wrote a rebel song, people who say that are people that don’t listen to lyrics in music 😃

A really powerful song about a very passionate topic for a band from Ireland. The only bad thing about the video was that the director seems to have a problem with Bassist Adam Clayton, he didn't want to show him. Larry Mullin, Dave "The Edge" Evans and, of course, Bono Vox, all had multiple close ups, but none for Mr. Clayton. A strong performance by the band. Got to see U2 one time, on the "Joshua Tree" tour, in Philly, and Bruce Springsteen came on for the encore. They played "Stand By Me", quite different.

Impassioned performance, very moving. I think anyone can relate to this outcry against violence. ❤

My favorite band of all time! Please react to their song Until the end of the world from their ZooTV tour. Happy to see the young folk taking an interest in this great band!

My grandmother bought me a book about them in a used book store. Funny because she didn't even know if I listened to them - but I think she was drawn by the author's last name "Dunphy" (think that's the spelling) which is one of her family names (we are very Irish on that side of the fam) - and the band themselves were VERY Christian - like born again Christian. I thought that was interesting because you mostly see that in Amercia. Larry Mullen Jr - the drummer - was a gorgeous James Dean looking guy. ;)

I was at this festival. It was miserablely hot in the desert east of LA. This was the first I heard of U2. I was more interested in a bunch of the other bands.

In terms of Bono saying "This is not a Rebel Song" (separate from what the song was inspired by), I believe he was referring to many of the IRA taking this as their song, at the time. However, as you have noted, the song takes on a strong stance against nonviolence. So at the time, Bono. and U2 were not comfortable with endorsing the IRA due to their tactics (not necessarily their original end-goal) In your U2 videos you have mentioned you aren't sure why people hate on Bono. I think it comes down to a few key things -Bono, and U2 what their hearts on their sleeve. This is not very fashionable amongst the punk community and other too-cool-for-school cliques -Bono and U2 do NOT shy away from politics, and you can see, that was in place early on -Bono could be on rants and/or preachy speeches in concert. It wasn't every concert, but enough for him to get a reputation for it, far before social media, and prevelance of live recordings that are easily available -U2 are old, each new decade of them still being in the public has a dual impact - It sustains their popularity and relevance. And newer generations often automatically reject much of the decade just prior. -Popularity always attracts detractors. -Even within the U2 diehard fanbase, there are factions, many of whom dislike specific eras of U2. I would say, predominantly the era that you grew up with usually ends up being yours, and everything after you just can't get on board with or may \even ridicule or deride - And there are AT LEAST 3 distinct eras, but I would argue its probably 4 or 5. -The "Apple Album". People REALLY bandwagoned to be in on that joke, like HARD.

Growing up - (I was 13 when War came out) - the first fraction was when they made Unforgettable Fire - that leap into arena rock meant they no longer belonged to that original strong fan base. I very specifically remember listening to an Indie radio show in 85 and the host saying, "well, they were great but they sold out." I didn't love the hits during that period, always found the rest of the songs to be better. I don't care at ALL for the big hits on Joshua Tree but songs like Running to Stand Still - were/are incredible. Maybe their last great album for me was Achtung Baby? I kind of gave up on most popular music after 2001. LOL.
