U2 stole the show……everyone knew Queen would be brilliant and they were. Up stepped U2 singing of terrorism and heroin addiction and blew the roof off. Showmanship, passion, musicianship, crowd interaction all whilst making people think ❤️

Actually Bono was not just being a "Ladies Man", the girl that he was pointing to, trying to alert the bouncers that she was being crushed in the crowd was 15-year-old Kal Khalique. She later said that he had saved her life.

Even though there were top tier bands/artists that were HUGE who performed at Live Aid, Queen and U2 were who EVERYONE was raving about, in the moment, the days and weeks following, and historic recounts, ever since. Queen were at the top of their game in terms of live performance. They had just finished up doing some massive shows in Rio. Their performance was clean perfection. It was a well orchestrated performance, and Freddie had the crowd in the palm of his hand. They were polished and hit everything just right. As noted, they were already superstars with massive hits that everyone knows. It's a festival lineup, so people aren't always necessarily there for a specific band, but Queen had the ready made well known stadium anthems. U2 did not have a real hit yet. Pride had just come out. It became their first big hit, and they didnt get to play it at Live Aid. In contrast to Queen, U2 were raw and intimate while still reaching for the sky. Bono also literally and figuratively broke the fourth wall. NO ONE had approached the audience on any level (and this was before Queen came on, I believe). Bono was drawing the crowd in, then exploding out into the crowd in song and embrace. This became quintessential U2, intimacy which brings everyone closer then bursting out into universal church-like communion and crowd-work. It essentially displayed everything of what U2 are, with the simplicity and some of the attitude of punk, paired with stadium rock and theatre, within a Celtic folk earthiness - Those elements always exist whether via Postpunk raucus, ethereal atmosphere, pop rock, Americana, or Eurotrash, or any other styles

I liked this U2 performance better than Queen, tbh. This is so in-the-moment, unplanned, and unique. The jeopardy and realness of the energy gets me every time. Also, the girl he danced with-she was actually suffocating by being pushed into barricade. Bono could see her but security kept missing her. So he jumped down. He danced w/ her to calm her down & to smartly make it “part of the show.” She later said in an interview that he saved her life. Btw, U2 is not a band that block reaction videos.

U2 are one of the greatest bands of all time. Such passion, you can feel the spirit touch your soul when bono sings. They were the soundtrack of my life. 💗💞💗💞💗💞💗

I know you’re focused on the very early U2 stuff right now. I’m a U2 fan of 38 years. And if you want to see U2 and Bono at peak artistic greatness, check out U2 live from Sydney 1993. Particularly Until The End of The World and Love is Blindness. Bono came out of the womb a natural timeless front man. And the band are huge Elvis fans as well.

True story the band went off the stage and had a massive argument about the performance. This performance overrun massively because of Bono. Timing was strict and they were supposed to play Pride in the name of love but because Bad over ran they didn’t have time to play their new single to billions of people. Little did the band know at the time it was going to be the performance that propelled them to superstardom. Then the Joshua Tree followed. I know Queen took all the glory but they were already global superstars. U2 were the act that benefited the most from live aid because it was a massive step to putting them in Queens league. Unbelievable performance. Any rock band now should watch that and get inspiration from it because that is literally the rule book of being a rock band

I think your surprise at the longevity of U2 is due to the success of their 2000 album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind”. It propelled them back to the top after a few years of hiatus. “Beautiful Day” was everywhere over the next few months and years and “Elevation” was the OST for the Tomb Raider movie starring Angelina Jolie. “The Joshua Tree” is my fave U2 album, magic 👏🏻

Thanks Lydell and Rory! 15 years old and I sobbed watching that.. Bono walking into the audience like Jesus - riffing on the Rolling Stones and Lou Reed. My best friend and I had a joke - that to this day neither one of us can fully explain -when she wrote on my school book cover "lust for Bono.." LOL, because like, "WHAT IS IT about this guy..!?!?!?" Maybe the word we were looking for was charisma. To look at him, he's just an ordinary guy, not super handsome, so why are we captured by him? LOL. You can really hear how they were bringing that spirituality into their music with this one.. "If I could, through myself, set your spirit free, I'd lead your heart away, see you break, breakaway, into the night..." There are themes here of transcendence, rebirth, and the resurrection. I'm not super religious but there was quite a bit of that where I grew up and U2 were born again Christians. This song is astonishing and the one I'd always said I wanted played at y funeral... but never out loud till now. - fingers crossed.

Rory! Been too long I've been away from your (and, yeah, a lot of others--takin a bit of a break!) reactions! Great one here as usual. Yeah, Bono has charisma and to spare. you had to muddle the screen but I didn't need to see it. I've seen it numerous times, including when it WAS "Live" on that Big Day in 1985. Some friends and I were on summer break from college, just doin shit, and we were gonna go somewhere. MTV had been on, and one of us said, "Wait, let's check out U2's set first." We were TRANSFIXED!

Satalite of love was a reference to Lou Reed ?🙂

This performance stole the entire show, until Freddy Mercury took the stage. It was U2s coming out party, so to speak. This is the moment they vaulted into international superstardom.

There is nothing controversial about Bono, it's narrow-mindedness and jealousy. He uses his star power to try and make a difference. I know so many people who don't like U2 until they're listening to them lol. It's ridiculous! A buddy of mine and his gf took mushrooms at U2 and Bono pulled her up on stage to dance with him.... On shrooms wtf

When you mix politics and religion into your music, it's going to be controversial, and Bono has taken heat for his opinions, but I think that's why, after seeing them live 20 times since 1985, I'm still a U2 fan. The Sphere was an amazing experience, and I wish all fans could've made it there.
