Over the last few months, I’ve met some incredible people through the Show Me the Money Club (SMTMC) on KZfaq. The diversity of our community is our strength, and I believe if we all work together without labeling anyone, we can achieve our common goal, which is fixing what is broken with the gig economy.
Is everything great in the gig world? Of course not, we need to keep fighting for our rights, from wanting to stay independent contractors (ICs) to fair pay and benefits. That’s why we need to work together and understand each other to keep fighting for our interests.
Speaking of working together, while hosting a SMTMC event, I met a man named Jeff, who I originally called “The Uber Kool Aid Drinker.” For him, Uber could do no wrong. As you all know, I don’t think Uber is perfect, and I’m skeptical of those who do.
Wanting to better understand Jeff, I decided to reach out to him and see why he felt this way about Uber, how he got started with Uber, and why he accepts (almost) every request that comes his way.

I do the food delivery side of the apps there are people 60 years old and older doing exactly this taking every single order just because they’re bored and it gives us something to do and like helping people lol…. this is their main source of income. They just do it for bingo night money

Jeff makes it harder for other drivers to make money because he accepts everything. We can force Uber to pay us more by declining bs fares and leaving their customers stranded until they pay us like they should.

I agree to what if the new york drivers had the same thought as him they would have never gotten the pay raise that they Protested for recently. It's like them saying be a good boy and accept all the rides regardless of how much we paying u. There is people that have no other job but Uber or lyft u heard him say he have a full time job so this is not his main source of income.

I'm in the Las Vegas area and we have tried to strike and it doesn't work, because people like him say what he just said, he has a full-time job why should he strike. I even tried to suggest like maybe turn off the app for 2hrs during a huge event to send a message to Lyft and Uber, but they say shit like while yall drive we will take the rides. Smh, Such selfishness 🙄🙄

He gets it, apparently it’s working for him and he enjoys what he does. It’s obvious that you don’t “get it”, every driver is different, where you’re motivated by greed and make the most money possible(which isn’t necessarily bad, we all have bills and whatnot) he’s motivated to help everyone possible, at the end of the day he enjoys what he does and goes home happy, hopefully you do as well.

Lately here in Charlotte, I am seeing a lot of rides for 3.50. If there is a surge, it might even go lower than that for longer rides. They lower the price of the ride when there is a surge for some reason. My main thing is how mean some of the passengers are getting. Really abusive... some with unreasonable expectations... like a stop at wendys to get a burger... they think we are supposed to wait an hour if that is what it takes because Uber let them put Wendy's as a stop. (that got a 1 rating even though we found another place.) Also, some people want to bring food in the car, I ask them to put it in this nice thermal bag in the back and most people are OK with that, but many get upset... and want to eat in the car. Really messy food. I do not allow that and they will not respect my choice. Grease is not easy to clean and my car is mint because I do not allow it. There is no protection from these jerks. My only recourse is to say, NOPE and cancel the ride... which results in losing the surge, and losing time... and often being in an area that is uncomfortable. Is there a way out I have not considered... because I am tired of getting a 1 because 1) I will not wait long time for stops and 2) no eating in the car. You would not believe how some people are total PIGS and leave a mess... and garbage in the car. I detail it almost every day by hand. As of now, my only recourse is to just say no and drive off. 7K rides. Used to be in the top %10. Lately I keep finding lines in the sand I have to draw and frankly I do not like who I feel I am becoming. The stress levels are almost intolerable some times...

Tough situation. I got a one recently from a guy who said he was going to buy "a bunch of stuff" at the grocery store. I very nicely explained that the stop is for 3-5 minutes and if he was going to be longer than that he needs to order another ride. I now have it posted from Uber on the time limit. The guy thought about it and said okay, but gave me the one. I called Uber and told them to remove me from having him again. I've been having polite conversations with people about it and it has worked, but I'm driving during the day which is easier. Sometimes you get a 1 and you just forget about it-that's why the rating is with 500 riders. Eating in the car I have sometimes, maybe just one or two problems. I usually ask for some and joke about they should take all of it so my riders afterwards won't have any. Good luck, not an easy problem.

@Norma Stits if you think he is not lowering the ball in this game you not even know what is going on, anyways I'm not blaming him for take the crap, I still take the meat and do more in this business. I'm on top of this game ti be honest and can show proof of my earnings anytime, doing his strategy when I used to be dimond and doing mine strategy with acceptance rate at 10%. Anyway, I'm glad he won't be driving for long term as the way he does business is just hurting a lot of drivers out there, of course Uber is happy.

@Norma Stits Uber hunger games is offering a trips to many drivers at a range of prices, the lowest fare driver gets the priority, if everyone decline the trip, that trip is offered to a driver like Jeff and the fare goes down because the algorithm learned there are still persons doing charity. I'm not a victim here, I'm just pointing out what is going on and why are the fares going down even when pax are paying higher fares. If we all decline and get the good trips the algorithm just can go up.

@@Mario-hd7ls Keep your acceptance rate at 10% and be proud. It is a reflection of the US in 2023. I am sure that during the 90% of the time you do not accept rides you are earning tons of cash doing other things. Jeff will be in it for the long haul as he enjoys what he does and is not solely driven by money. I have been in this game since 2015 with over 25K rides and have never taken a ride that was not profitable. Spread the word to all of your cherry picker colleagues and I will be laughing all the way to the bank averaging 4x-5x operating costs on every ride.

Such a great inspiration as far as attitude! I also been in the distribution business of publications for 35 years in SF, and have enjoyed driving for a living now for over 40 years (5 as a rideshare driver). We offer a service to our “riders”, they are the ones that pay for the service regardless of how much Uber/Lyft take is. Treating them as honored guests in your car is a privilege. Yes you’ll get bad apples every so often and some unlucky drivers even are harmed by either mentally ill individuals or downright malevolent people, but the great majority are decent people, treating them as you would wish to be treated works wonders.

I have been driving for Lyft and Uber for 6 years. I have never depended on them as my only income. That goes a long way to keep a positive attitude. Some times I drive a lot and sometimes I don’t. Having that flexibility makes a big difference. Right now I will only drive a long distance or airport if it takes me out of an area I want to get out of.

I'm in California and I usually accept all high rated ride's. Prop 22 makes this strategy sensible. In my area most of the ride's are cheap anyway but they are plentiful. Staying busy with "active time" is key. As long as I have a rider on the on the platform, I'm constantly getting paid a guaranteed minimum plus tips, so I don't worry as much about the individual fares.

What's the guaranteed minimum in CA produced by Prop 22? And if you don't mind me asking, why are most rides in your area "cheap?" I've noticed Lyft scheduling rides to airport in my area for $4-7 dollars. I think that's really cheap!

I live in Redding CA and the rides are plentiful, butt off and not very high-paying, so my strategy is just to keep the active time rolling as much as. In CA prop 22 is based on active time, so I'm constantly getting paid to guaranteed minimum if I have an active rider on the platform. Plus tips are 100% additional

Under prop 22, you're guaranteed 120 percent minimum wage plus $0.30 per mile for all your active time and active miles. That's for every California driver and tips are additional to that. Also, what constitutes a high rated passenger is a personal opinion. I personally think any passenger rated under 4.5 is not a high rated passenger.

@@Thehandsomeliberal I have said this to you before on your channel. I respect your views, as you know, but rarely agree with you. Educational, not really but giving some balance to ridesharing, absolutely. I also share my experiences when asked but with balance. I would not recommend anyone drive rideshare as their only source of income. That is their decision. Uber and Lyft have yet to turn a profit, do you think drivers will ever be rich doing this? There are many misguided viewers who are always the victim, filled with hatred, and who always blame others. I haven't heard Jeff criticize any of them, have you? Look at the comments here. I can only speak for me. Because of good life decisions, my all in costs to operate this business are $.27 a mile. Even at the crappy rates today there is still room for massive profit at 4x-5x operating costs. That works for me. I am diamond and platinum with U/L though not near 99% but that is me. I have spent my life seeking solutions in my w2 career. Roadblocks always happen and I refuse to let that stop me. Any second wasted whining, blaming others, playing the victim, is time that could be spent staying a step or two ahead of the predators and exploiters known as U/L (and every company). I have empathy for anyone who has to do this type of work as a main source of income because there is no upside. That is not the fault of Uber/Lyft. You seem like a pretty smart man, in 2015 when I began I made 75% of the fare. Anyone doing this at that time should have known that this would not last forever. It was a SIDE HUSTLE. My career took me out of Florida 20 days a month. You better believe that the 10 days I was home, I spent every moment doing Uber and used EVERY PENNY to pay down my mortgage. In 2018 I retired at 53 without a mortgage and have very low life expenses, none of which are funded by Uber. That is called SACRIFICE. Now my time is spent with the wife, kids, and grandson. That is how my costs are a miniscule $.27 a mile! I drive when I want. Will Uber ever be what it was in 2015, of course not. Is it still profitable for me at 4x-5x operating expenses? You better believe it. Is it my fault that others who have taken no responsibility for their place in life or have made horrible decisions hat? Not for a second. The beauty of America is that they can all delete the App. Go get a w2 job and learn a skill or trade. Not in 2023 America, just blame others and play the victim!!!! Not me, EVER!!

Same! If I accept $5 rides, I'll have to take atleast 30 of those rides to break even... meanwhile if I take rides over $20, I only have to do few to break even.

I being an Uber driver since 2013 and all those things Jeff said always being part of the Uber experience I like to give all my passengers, I have learn which passengers do like to talk and which don’t . Unfortunately besides giving people a transportation to passengers we are running a business and I agree on most of the things about giving people a good experience, Uber is taking advantage of people like Jeff and us whom don’t get pay what we are worth, we don’t work for tips. I came from the taxi industry and the way we are being paid is very undervalued for that premium service we provide, ride share shouldn’t be looked as just another transportation, we are taking people from point A to point B and that should come with the right price tag. We have public transportation that is meant to be affordable. We need to United and go for a strike and stop proving services for uber and let them feel what would happen with out us the service providers!

Ronnie, I drive during the day, but I pick everyone up so I have plenty of laundry mat, Wal-Mart(2 yesterday) and regular people going everywhere. 71 rides this weekend, tourists and airport rides definitely tip more frequently. Jeff

Great story shared by Jeff! I think it would have been better if some more information had been shared including some numbers so the viewers were able to compare some numbers of their own. I drive in Los Angeles I have given a little more than 4000 rides My rating has always been between 4.99-5.00 My acceptance rate is 20-30% (I cannot afford my expenses with a 25-minute ride that pays $8) I get tipped between 10-15% of the rides (reality here in LA) I usually make $30-35 per online hour (not active hour) If other viewers have advice, or comments or can benefit from this information, that would be nice.

Great numbers, congrats. Here are some of mine. Myrtle Beach and Charleston, over 10,000 rides part time over 4 1/2 years. 4.99 rating, 99% acceptance(missed the ride not refused) 1% cancellation. 45% tip ratio last year, I'm up 1% over the first three quarters this year compared to last. Gross pay the past two years $28 an hour. Do what's best for you, I fully support that. Good luck . Jeff

it really depends where you're driving. last summer i worked in asheville, north carolina. almost every ride was worth taking because it was mostly just tourists or workers doing short trips around the city core. occasionally i'd turn down airport trips because i didn't feel like it but those were good too. now, i am in allentown, pa, and my acceptance rate is around 50%. before last summer i was in denver for years and it was averaging around 75%. everywhere is different.

I am with Jeff on this. I started out accepting every ride and I work in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. After watching Sergio and others talk about cherry picking for better rates, I tried it for several days. What I have found is that my income actually went down when I did so. I would spend long periods of time declining ride after ride that didn't meet the criteria. What I have discovered is that I make more money by being as continuously "on the clock" as I can. Yes, some rides are not good, and I do reject rides occasionally that are just ridiculous or take into a part of town that I don't want to work. The other thing that I have learned is that often, very often, a not so good ride will put me in a place to pick up a really nice one. Had I not taken that earlier ride, I would not have been in place to be offered the better one. I also have found that the long rides are not necessarily that good either. The DFW area is huge and rides have taken me to far flung locations where I would be forced to deadhead back to Dallas to get any more rides. The Destination feature does not often work in my favor. My results are typically...8-10 hours online, about 250 miles and grossing $200. My typical gas for a day will be about $25. I drive a newer hybrid that gets about 45 mpg.

Cherry pickers tend to focus on dollar per mile, and while it is a valid metric, IMO dollar per hour is far more relevant because my time is valuable. Time waiting in a car is extremely expensive for me. It's not fun, it's not comfortable. I've been in that seat long enough. It's the LAST place I want to be if I'm not making money. The marginal machine cost of running a car is very little if you're already driving. Therefore making every minute productive at least more than $0.00/min is key or you're running at a loss timewise if that makes sense. Long rides were recently nerfed like in the last year or so. Jeff says the best rides are between 15-30 mins with a mix of freeway/highway and local roads and I agree. I've found that Lyft's destination feature is a lot better than Uber's. It is more accurate (it never took me in the opposite direction like Uber's), and as long as you stay online and accept the next ride toward your destination without logging off, your use remains 1. I started out with 2 but now I get 3 per day after rewards.

His idea of making a fair amount of money for a days work could be something totally different for others. He never said how much money he makes in a 12 hour period. To some people making $100 in 12 hours is good but to others making $500 in 12 hours is trash. We need more info here!

I would absolutely shoot myself if I make $100 in 12 hours I always aim to at least make $100 in 4 hours and most of the time I'm not even happy with that. For some reason I am just not getting any tips. Almost every Rider compliments how clean well put together my car is with water and plenty of gum snacks and treats I drive at the maximum allowed speed and my customer service is 100%. But I really get tips when I started over I always got tips.

@@sunshineman4394 that’s the way I see it, you never know what’s going on with these passengers and some could be in a bad place in life, and my goal is to go above and beyond and help them as much as possible, doing that is more rewarding than any tip or fare in my opinion, just to give them 1 less thing to worry about, if they need more time at a stop or need more time getting ready, I have zero issue as long as you communicate with me, it irritates me on the drivers counting down the seconds to collect canx fee or end ride early. The other day at airport I helped someone else’s passenger who was struggling putting their luggage in the Uber Driver’s trunk because the driver didn’t want to get out and help. I’m glad you were interviewed because it shows that you don’t have a greedy mindset or be a jerk to be successful in doing ride share and when you enjoy it, it feels like a hobby more than a job.

I'd love to have this discussion with you. I've been an I/C driver and manager of drivers for almost 30 years. I had my own business for 12 years delivering magazines with 8-17 I/C drivers. I did everything with my own business, including receivables and going to court to get paid-handling the accounting part is overrated. So last night I am in destination mode, nowhere near the airport, 10 minutes from my destination with 20 minutes left... and I start getting bombarded with rides 30- 128 miles away out of state. I wound up with 12 denied requests and after some were the same ones. for part of those it kept telling me that I risked being forced out of the queue, but I was at least 5 miles away from the airport.

Regardless if you work in an office or clean bathrooms, your attitude makes a different in your life and the people around you. I am new to the channel and ride-sharing, (4th week) My acceptance rate is 91% and 4-5% cancellations rate, and I feel your attitude impacts your daily monetary goals. Not sure how to track your tips… is this done manually? Or is there a way on the app/computer to know the tip percentage. Thanks so much for this message!!

Javier, welcome to rideshare. You are on target with your attitude, keep it up especially in your car. When I come home on the app it has the number of rides I did and in my inbox lists my tips who I thank then. If I got a cash tip I will right down on my calendar number of tips/number of rides. Yesterday 7-22, Saturday 12-26 and Friday 11-23. I put it on a calendar and I've done this the last four years to get real numbers. Best of luck to you-keep learning from everyone.Jeff

I am with this guy 100% on being an independent contractor and attitude being important. And accepting every ride could be fine before upfront pricing. However, with upfront pricing, accepting every single ride is just plain stupid. it’s hurting drivers as a whole, including himself. It’s training the algorithm that a driver is willing to give a 5 mile ride for $3. This guy was also assuming that if he doesn’t accept a request, that the rider will not get a ride, which is obviously incorrect. It’s just preventing Uber from under paying you for a ride.

Stop taking $5 and below rides, no matter if it's just 1 mile away, my minimum is $6 that is just to let any random person in in my car in a short trip. from there the miles are $1 per each one.

@Kyle in PA this is the way, I try to take at least 33 per hour (that is after rush hour) so 20 min trip must pay 11 or more, I don't care if is an X or a comfort, that is just a higher chance of tip if pax requests comfort, sometimes an X is better paid than comforts so I just take in consideration miles and time to make it from A to B. Anything with stops I Don't even look at during rush hours where I do between $40 up to $55 with this strategy. Of course on surge times my fare is up as well, Anything 20 min or close must pay better than 15 dollars. Algorithm knows me very well and it is getting better giving me rides for good fares after I decline everything is not worthy.

Also I'm just working 5 to 6 hours per day, doing the same money I used to do on 10 to 12 hours shift hitting the quest and keeping dimond status, now I don't even hit quest, way less rides and miles but payouts are the same. I confess I don't have the ambition to do those 10 to 12 hours shift anymore to see how much more money I can make.

I am in slc utah and I drive weekends and I average 40% tip ratio. Still have a 5 star rating as well although I’ve only done 500 trips as I just started jan of 2023. I make great money via tips. I try to make sure every passenger is in a better mood when they exit my car than they were when they got in. I am very attentive to be sure they’re at a comfortable temperature as well. It lets them know I care about them.

Excellent. The past two years I've averaged well over $300 a day which includes Uber promotions which have been high. I work 110-117 days each year and typically a full 12 hours. You sound like you're doing very well-happy for you. Keep it up. Jeff

Hey everyone! Uber driver here, I'm temporarily relocating from Ohio to Florida. I am licensed, registered and insured in Ohio. I'm wondering if there is any issues that will prevent me from just choosing a different city to drive in on the app/website? Some websites say I need a Florida license and or plates. Does anyone have experience relocating to Florida or other states?? [[[UPDATE]]] Kept my Ohio plates to drive in Florida no problem on both apps. Uber took longer because you can't just do it quickly in app like Lyft. With Uber you must call customer support. I was up and running with both apps in under 48 hours in a new state.

Uber/Lyft is becoming a Senior Citizen last hope. The elderly are being taking advantage of and most are not tech savvy. Accepting every ride is as easy as answering every phone call on a flip phone. Cherry Pickers are more active and probably multi app as these older folks have slower reaction times. This is not knocking on them, but to make awareness on what's going on. They deserve a fair chance to make a living and they are in a position of any ride is better than no ride. They think of every ride they get is a blessing and they are thankful for it.

Interesting reply. I'm only 62, but there are thousands and thousands of drivers in their 70's and 80's who drive for different reasons which is great. I gave up my flip phone, hated to do it. It is easier to accept every ride and that is part of why I do it. I've been a driver for almost 30 years, when I go out to drive, I want to driver. You do what's best for you and be safe. Jeff

I have a very High tip ratio but always looking for new Idea's - i remember over 5 years ago watching a very part timer who had a 5 star rating and made good tips simply had a bag of Jolly Ranchers on hand ( I could do that ) and to see the smiles on Riders faces . I'm in Denver and from the airport I refuse rides to ski areas since they guarantee 90 minutes of deadheading. My efficiency depends on being selective. Jeff also doesn't seem to need the money as badly as I do so his approach makes sense to him.

I'm in a ski town in Vermont. Drive nights at the ski area. They all want rides to and from restaurants and bars. They are in a great mood cause they are on vacation and tip great! I normally make $40-50 per hour on the weekend nights.

I tried accepting all my rides yesterday as an experiment. My earnings were way lower than normal. Most of that was due to the fact that Uber sent me out into the sticks and away from money. Maybe that strategy would work in LA but not in Virginia Beach.

You really have to be smart and work in your interest, not in Uber's/Lyft's interest. Uber/Lyft doesn't really care about you, and if you accept every trip, they will treat you like a slave. I learned that the hard way here in NYC.

He is free to do it his way there is nothing we can do but point it out so new drivers do not duplicate his behavior. I'm ok with competitors cherry picking trips, we all together set our own rates, and keep a decent fare. but I'm not ok with drivers picking up anything uber drops on them, That is hurting all of us and driving down the fares.

@Norma Stits you are comparing apples with rocks, anyways, i attend them as everyone else as i do now, and more importantly never expect a tip, if there is one cool, but I wont ask them to leave because is not my place, what I do is go to the kitchen and serve them what they requested with a big smile as I do when I drive them. The big difference you don't see here, is that there is no cost or overhead to walk from table to kitchen back and forth as many times they want, but uber service is different, the more you drive the more often you change oil, tires, brakes, car depressation, gas and that cost is not related to work in a restaurant.

I rather having a fair fare than trying to get a tip from pax, I drive them the same with or without tip. actually i don't like tips because I know Customer are squeezed already and most of them are in a budget, so I rather take my piece from uber and don't get a tip.

It comes down to your specific market and how many requests come in. If there is a high volume of requests, why not choose the higher per mile, per hour rides? If your in a slower market, you probably gotta accept whatever’s available to make it worthwhile. Do your own test both ways and give it a week run so you capture all days since each day has different demands.

33 of 105 trips tipped me. I'm a newbie. It helps that I have a really nice car, but without comfort status yet, it is not really paying well, even with good tips. Ill give it another 100 rides, see how that works. Kudos to this guy, he knows how to work. No matter what you do, if you work with that attitude, it makes everyone's world a better place.

I just looked, I’m at 84%. I only work mornings so I decline the very long rides from 07:00 to 09:00 to keep my points up. I’ve also noticed that short rides are paying better than long rides. I hate how the algorithm plays games with us. Funny how from 05:00 to 07:00 you’ll get all of these short rides and then when the rides are worth 3 points each suddenly you get a bunch of long rides and for most of them you’re just sitting in traffic. No thank you.

Some people don't want to talk and I just take a break and be polite and short with my remarks. I haven't had a negative comment on the app in 10,000 rides. The last 1 got was a young guy who was going to "buy a bunch of stuff" at a grocery store and I nicely explained if it was going to be more than 5 minutes he would have to call another Uber. It happens, I focus on the all the other great people in my car. Don't let one bad apple spoil your day-shake it off. All the best. Jeff

I'm glad he's happy, that's always good, but the tips, I doubt, are even making up for the loss he's incurring from taking bad/low paying rides. Also, his market is key to a lot of the success he has experienced. Move to an area that isn't filled with tourists and you're going to have a much different experience with tips, traffic, dead-zones, and general safety. What's more, when drivers go around accepting everything, they lower the total pay offers to everyone around them. Uber's not going to offer other drivers more pay when he's willing to do it for whatever. Again, glad he's happy, but he's kinda spoiling the soup for everyone else.

I mean, I like short trips to engage more people and increase the chance to get tips as the more Pax you have the chances for tips increases, but the best practice is doing it as profitable as posible, so if ther is no tip you are not losing and making up with another trip.

@@Mario-hd7ls I live in a non-tourist area. I cherry-pick like mad. I do almost entirely short trips. They pay the best, and don't take you out of the busy zone. It really is the best practice. No gimmicks in my car. I just keep bottled water in the door pockets and a multi-cable phone charger. I'm friendly and clean. I get tips. You don't need to have conversation pieces all over the car. I got $60 cash tips last weekend from just two passengers. I have had people hand me $20, $50, $100. I hope this guy stays happy, but it's all just confirmation bias.

@K P I know, I just did the same today, just short trips and cherry picking them, the longer one was $35 to airport plus $8 tip for $43. 112 miles for $234 in just 5 hours is not bad for me, I don't know why he relates tips with cheap fares as uber keeping the most of the cake and charging customers anyways, is not like he is offering a cheap ride, he is just bending over for uber to take advantage of him and this definitely hurts everyone else as the more cheap we are the more low the paid we get. Hey, I'm glad he is happy doing his charity, I do it as well some times a stop here and there free of charges when I'm done... but no way I can do it in rush hour or for every single ride.

I live in a very high density, high volume and high income area. You still absolutely MUST select the most profitable rides. I'm at 22% acceptance rate and about 5% cancels. Decline, decline, decline! BTW, For the past 10 weeks I'm at $1,450 week gross sales and 4% of my cost is fuel. Drive a hybrid like it has a rabbit under the gas pedal and choose offers wisely.

Have any of you had Uber keep your pay? Last week I didn’t get paid on some of my rides. A total of 127.00 in 3 days.

That's jacked. I have had them be shady about the promos/quest bonus, but never on getting paid. You may want to call and talk with them.

Not bragging, really. I've tracked my tips for four years because as a number's guy I wanted to know what they really are and what to expect. It's been very helpful. 50% tips is outstanding, congrats. Most people don't want to deal with numbers, so I can give them specifics on this and by month also which does vary. I've replaced many cars and paid with them with I/c driving jobs for a lot of years. Good luck to you.

Jeff, I hope you don't take all the negative attitude/ blame to heart. I can see why you do the way you do. You are semi-retired, market-driven, work only 3 days, and have worked in management. So your perspective differs from someone who depends on rideshare to make a living. Remember this for all the people blaming people like jeff for the low pay. Uber/lyft has never been profitable, yet they are still in business because investors are still pouring money into it. Why because when autonomous cars are ready to go Uber/lyft will have the biggest cost off their books. We don't know how long it is going to be, but it is coming. Stop blaming people like Jeff for the low pay and understand as soon as Uber/Lyft went public this was going to happen because Wall street wants profits. When a new business starts it is about getting markets as fast as possible ( low drivers$$$$) as the market flattens (market = drivers $$) all markets are covered (drivers+$).

what if the new york drivers had the same thought as him they would have never gotten the pay raise that they Protested for recently. It's like them saying be a good boy and accept all the rides regardless of how much we paying u. There is people that have no other job but Uber or lyft u heard him say he have a full time job so this is not his main source of income. So he only working 2 days compare to people working 5 to 7 days straight.

Jay-I started part-time driving on Saturday and Sunday. I semi-retired a year an a half ago, (partly due to my Uber income) and I driver 3 days a week, 110-117 full days a year. I typically do 36 hours a week. Had 71 rides this weekend. Good luck to you. Jeff

4:30-4:50: percentage of pax/riders who tip any amount I only track overall tip amount as a percentage of my total gross revenue and my net fares. It might be just 5% of riders per week who are responsible for 90+% of my total tips that week. So, the way I see it, it doesn't matter if half of my riders each tip a dollar when just 10% of my riders could tip even more.

Brent, there are many ways to track tips, do it the way that works best for you. I just last year started tracking what my average tip was-it was $5.68 on about 1,250 some tips. Not sure if that is good or bad, I drive during the day. Good luck to you. Jeff

Totally agree with this guy. There are different types of IC out here doing ride share with different backgrounds with different reasons. He only does it for a couple of days and doing 12 hours a day. Everything he gets in that 12 hours are profit.

Well for being a driver for 4 1/2 years approaching 5 years of driving with over 9000 rides. Looks like I’ve been getting 40% to 50% tips on an average week. Sometimes I am reaching 55% to 60% tips. I guess having a professional attitude and driving a luxury vehicle really does help my average earnings. Even though the maintenance to my Infiniti Q70L is quite more than the average sedan.

Bruh, when can I *EVER* get these "40% of my passengers tip" rides?! 😒 I live in a major metropolitan area with a big college in it, and between the college kids and the tech bros and the folks who just don't want to take the bus AND the bar crowd, I'm lucky to clear 5% of riders who tip.

Different areas are going to be more difficult. I pick everyone up so I have plenty of riders who I have little to no chance of getting a tip. Do the best you can do, treat riders as you would a friend, have some fun, and don't let non-tippers spoil your day. In 2021 and 2022 I had 2,400 riders tips me and I had close to 3,000 not tip me. I appreciate the 2,400. Track the tips you get so you know how you're doing. Good luck. Jeff

Jeff seems like a very nice well intentioned individual. He unfortunately is not looking at this like a business owner. The asset being used will need repaired and replaced over time. The revenue generated less all of the expenses and taxes are likely not going to be sufficient to cover the long-term expenses associated with the asset let alone allow any excess revenue to be saved in order to replace the asset once it has gone beyond its useful life.

I believe he is. Ask Sergio to send you my spreadsheet of operating costs. They showed it on the SMTMC. My costs all in for the life or the vehicle is $.27 per mile (including purchase price with interest). Even at $1.00 a mile that is 4x operating costs. That includes everything you mentioned above. In my 7 years with Uber/Lyft, I have never paid a dime in federal taxes. No state or local income tax in Florida. Making handsome profits along the way. Cars last MUCH longer here with great roads, no winters, etc. Here is the part many of you fail to understand. Business has highs and lows, In mid 2021 when blue states ended covid lockdowns (coincidently at the same time or was it close to an election, I digress) for 6 months or more we were making bonus after bonus, quest after quest, streak after streak. Sometimes $25 for a 4 mile ride. Any complaints from all of you then? A "BUSINESS OWNER" as you put it knows nothing lasts forever and saves or invest those MARGINAL profits (look it up) for times like these when the shoe is on the other foot. Jeff seemed very happy to me, honest, and forthcoming. Perhaps because he was a great businessman, his life expenses are little to nothing, allowing him to profit as much as the cherry pickers without playing all of the games??? List up all with a brain, there are only a few things that can effect how U/L treat drivers IMO 1- decline in ridership 2- decline in drivers (won't happen because of inflation and coming recession. More need supplemental income) 3- minimal and I mean minimal government oversight (transparency) If any of you think a few thousand cherry pickers in a pool of 5 million drivers will effect anything in the long term, I feel sorry for all of you.

Keep in mind that cities are very different and what one driver thinks is low is not low for someone else. As I/c's we get to decide what rides to take when we drive and how much. He seems retired and he doesn’t need money but for me as a provider for my family of five I can’t live on this low wages trips In fact, it costing me money to accept those kinda of trips. We already compromising so much with Uber job. We have zero basics rights. Uber cost so much expenses now they add fuel to the fire by cutting our wages, and I can tolerate that I thought we are independent contractors, which is up to us to accept or not, but now they trying to win everything if they like to see good acceptance rates, they need to give good wages and this is not even up for discussion it’s one road to Ways other than that it will impact Uber, riders and drivers

John, I'm semi-retired 18 months partly due to the Uber income I made on the weekend when I had a full-time job. I drive Friday-Sunday now about 110-117 days a year a full 12 hour day. Over 30 years I've had part-time driver jobs to raise my kids. I love being an I/C. I've always thought this was part-time work that some people do full-time. If you're raising a family and doing this full-time it can be tough. Do the best you can and make it work with other streams of revenue. All the best to you. Jeff

Sergio, I share a lot with Jeff, I truly like to meet new people, and be out there driving, talking etc... but I'm not doing it for charity. He fully understands people needs move, go work, go home, go appointment, take a plane... that is the reason why we have a Fare and a worth, we still serve the community as he is doing but he doesn't understand that we are driving for a fair paid, tips wich i never expect, are on top. That being said, I do the same he does but I do it in the profitable way, there is no way I take some random person in a 5 miles ride to the airport for less than 20 dollars, even my brother asked me for a ride at my shift time and I charged him more than 20 to go to the airport. If I get an airport trip I get charged like 30 buck or so, so why I would do it for $5 to $7 bucks? No way

@TheRationalDriver I'm not saying is not profitable, I'm saying I do not take anybody to the airport or from the airport for less than 20 dollars, I don't care if is just 1 mile, it is the pick up/drop-off location the deal breaker for me For several reasons. For example, airport surcharge is always $4, no matter if is short trip, so I set my minimum airport trip to $20, because is better for me doing 2 shorties and be in a good spot for a 3rd trip (3 possibles tips vs 1) than do an airport and come back with death miles. Also A person taking a plane is willing to pay whatever is charged to get on that plane so I'm not ok taking $5, $10, $15 doing that. Also I know if I request a ride I get charge like $30 to the airport, so I know my worth when I drive, I'm not ok if uber keeps 70% of the fare no mater if is just a mile and still profitable.

I'm in a DMV, like last night after 12 AM uber sent me a trip that was 4$, since it wasn't a long ride I accepted it, on my way the rider added a stop, and the fare still remain the same. And I just canceled the ride. Seriously uber!!! With a stop ! Paying me 4 bucks!! Time is money.. I've done over 23 thousands ride over 4 years, so no uber I will canceled all those scam trips

Just reminds me so much of myself I have been doing Uber and Lyft for a little over four years given a little over 11,000 rides With a 99% acceptance rate and a 4.999 rating between Uber and Lyft. The only difference is I only drive at night what I do is I am providing a service so when a ride comes in they’re needing a service. Those that have had too much to drink were smart enough to call for a ride so I want to be there to make sure they get home safe rather than skipping that ride because it didn’t pay very much and they get behind the wheel of a car and kill them, or someone else might tip percentage is also around 50% off at Jeffers correct attitude is everything

Just saw your post. I drive in Charleston SC which has Upfront Pricing and in Myrtle Beach which does not but has very few rides between the fall and spring. I had one ride last year I did not accept, 3 1/2 hours round trip and I've accepted all this year so far. I was down 6% for the year, but bonuses and the mileage adjustment was $3,700 or about 10%. I was pretty happy the decrease was minimal.

Living the Golden Rule in any situation, good or bad = joy and even financial reward. WE are rideshare. Uber lyft solved a problem for passengers and drivers. Model is flawed, but we're all here to learn/improve. Our attitudes snd what we give can make or break anything. Kudos to this man and also people like Rideshare Guy and Rideshare Professor who sincerely put themselves on a limb to make positive change for all. Love.

Tips are coming down for everyone, it seems to me elderly people gets more tips as my dad drives he always get crazy tips, but even his tips are coming down, we talked about it last week, we used to meet and go out to eat on sundays with the cash we made in tips, probably 120 to 150 in one week, now a days we have 20 to 50 cash by the end of the week and that is all.

I really believe it depends on where you drive. Big cities that are heavily populated in such a small area are easier to “cherry pick” Like Jeff here I have a 4.99 rating and 98% acceptance rate (basically not taking a long trip at end of shift prior to logging off) I’m in a mixture of local/tourist area being in Sarasosta. The beaches during summer are heavy with tourists that tip well. And then more locals may not as well. The average pickup time in my area is about 7-8 minutes. It’s just the nature of the area, a lot of trip requests are from Sarasosta beach to resorts or restaurants and even East 20-30 miles or even in the next Northern region of Tampa/St Pete. I drive a mini van and provide cold water and also have a roku linked into my Vans VES system that gives live TV and other streaming services (which last weekend I had just over an hour trip that had two guys watch the 2nd half of a basketball game in NCAA tournament) so they were happy. Even riders that aren’t in my Van long appreciate that I have it as an option. I try not to drive past 11 pm if I can help it.

There is your problem. A business owner is not an hourly employee and $$/hour is irrelevant. What does he PROFIT per day is a better question, Ask yourself: Would you rather make $1,000 a day with $900 in expenses or $300 a day with $50 in expenses?

@@skep2 I disagree, the overwhelming majority of drivers have no clue as to what their expenses are. That is part of the problem. Question for you. Let's say you owned a Starbucks. You were also the GM at a rate of $50/hour BUT the store lost $25K a month and closed. Does $50 an hour make you feel better? OR would you rather make $18/hr but the store profits $50,000 a month and stays in business for 25 years. Focus on rideshare is PROFITS not hourly earnings.

My Uber rating is 4.99, but keep in mind I drive during the day so I'm dealing with somewhat sober, normal people. I work 3 days a week on the weekend and driver 110-117 full 12 hour days the past two years. I had 71 rides this weekend in two areas. I drive too many miles by choice, depending on where I am.
