He knows because he was the only one that grew up poor, in a trailer park. He played street ball with the Mexican kids. But its rare in soccer for that type of kid to make it big, most of them are from suburbs with well-off parents.

@@nofurtherwest3474 going to play college soccer is NOT "making it big" I'm sorry but that's laughable. College soccer is Academy/U23 level soccer. Nothing more. The real success stories in American soccer are not rich kids, they are the children of former footballers (e.g. Reyna, Pulisic) or children of immigrants (e.g. Almiron).

Clint's comment regarding the "pay to play" is quite a resounding condemnation - and accurate. Youth soccer in the US is not serving well. Too many young players who could potentially be outstanding players are effectively excluded from advancing their soccer career because they can't afford to play in the better leagues and organizations.

The pay to play system is the biggest obstacle to youth development.
@houseofvenusMD
@houseofvenusMD 7 ай бұрын
I disagree. All US sports are pay-to-play at the youth level from Baseball Little League to AAU Basketball. The issue is that those selected to play in US youth soccer are often people with connections or foreigners (no not children of immigrants, actual foreign players that come to America to take away opportunities from our players because they got boxed out of European or South American academies). US Youth soccer will develop once we stop giving away opportunities to other kids AND we start pushing multi-sport athletes to take soccer seriously. In the US our best athletes are multi-sport athletes.

I agree. My family did not have the time money to even be able to consistently put me or my siblings in non-competitive rec-leagues let alone the well-connected youth club/travel teams. I played in high school (a system not integrated into US Soccer’s system at all) but unfortunately the quality of coaching was abysmal. There were many little fingers to point at but overall the US became super complacent for about a decade leading up to 2018. In prior generations (2002) it was somewhat countered with grit and determination but by the time 2016 came, there was so many USMNT players walking around thinking they were top caliber players because they played on a mid/bottom-table team in a European league. McKennie, Musah and Adams should be a very solid 3 midfield. They played at a high level in 22 but notably failed to track back against the Netherlands and this showed a lack of communication and connection with the center backs. They also have good outside backs, at least good enough to make it far in knockout. Pulisic is an actual star, but he needs a role carved out for him to thrive. The weakness is the center backs and the forward line. With the type of athletes that are practically mass-produced in the USA, it has always been mind-boggling that we can’t develop a strong striker to run in behind and win aerial duels. It’s a mystery.

What a load of rubbish. The players (and the coach, especially Klinsmann for putting them in that position - and he actually has a very poor record as a manager) have to take more ownership and stop trying to pass the blame on to others. How can youth development be the reason that a team loses to a much weaker team? When USA made the quarter-finals of the 2002 WC was it because the youth development was better then?

Having grown up eating and breathing football in the UK and now spending the past forty years in the US, I can see a lot of sense in what they said. I still believe American players need to play with good competition to get better. Also, the US needs to play tougher teams in between WC’s. You can’t expect to go to the WC and expect to do well unless you have a gauge at where the team is at. You won’t get that playing Jamaica, Trinidad, Canada and El Salvador among others.

Bradley, Altidore, Dempsey, Howard, etc all chose to cash out instead of staying at the highest competitive level. It's not Klinsmann fault that USA failed to qualify. Sure he lost the 2 first games. But once Arena got the job, he had 8 games to write that wrong. The last game was all Arena. That old squad won a Gold Cup that same year. And with an A squad couldnt beat Trinidad away. Sure, they had the quality to win but didn't, so you have to think about the 'why'. And while Klinsmann lost the plot, you could literally see it & his reaction with all the players LEAVING more competitive environments, including the captains, for not as strong competition (MLS). Jozy's point is interesting because basically he's saying "Yes we came back but other players should have pushed harder." And it's true. Players had to do whatever they could to PUSH players like Altidore, etc. OUT of the setup. And a way to do that might be to prove it against better competition than what exists in MLS. So I agree but in another way think it's an inadvertent statement about the lack of leadership (by example) of the senior players on the side ditching higher competition for lower.

We had players representing the MLS champions, as well as the best outfield player in all CONCACAF at the time with Pulisic scoring 7 goals AND 7 assists in the campaign. This was a major upset and there is no getting around that fact.

Ok I've said thid before, the U.S style of play on the pitch is very much a run and gun. Their is no innovation, no elegance, no strategy. Just long ball and a foot race to it. No through balls, no angles, no teamwork. It is embarrassing, and that fact that people say oh I'm proud of our boys when they get crushed by a dutch team who I said before the game was going to happen because of the reasons I just mentioned. Im sorry but US has way better talent that Pulisic out there and it needs to do a better job finding that talent.

I'm a little league coach and I see it from the beginning stages!! It's pay to play!! Academies are stacked with kids who's parents can afford the price and the travel!!!!! The kids who play the regular grassroots level, some are STARS but can't afford the academy teams. Some grassroots teams can literally crush Academy teams!!!Academy teams and coaches at those lower levels, thumb their noses at grassroots players instead of actively scouting and bringing them in without the money.. Bottom line, continuously look for those hidden talents, get rid of the pay to play if you discover star players. To build a soccer nation, you can't handicap the kids that can't afford to get into Academy programs....

US Soccer stop blaming pay-to-play. The NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, don't complain about how expensive their youth sports are. Instead US Soccer needs to focus on marketing and development programs that make soccer one of the primary sports played by young MULTI-SPORT athletes. MJ played baseball, basketball, football. Lebron's primary sport was football, he started playing basketball as he went into middle school and finally committed to it once he realized he could go to the NBA directly from HS. Patrick Mahomes played baseball, basketball, and football. I can go on. You guys get the idea. Stop trying to emulate other soccer cultures. We have our own athletic culture when it comes to excellence. Let's apply it to this sport and dominate in 2026!

You're argument is a non sequitar as your premise is based on a false analogy. The global game, including the long established soccer powers, do NOT play a pay-to-play system. Further, you cannot compare the American sports leagues to the rest since they don't operate on that model nor do they even play the same sport. One assumption you may be holding is that the American way can somehow revolutionize the game, but that's not going to happen on account of the fact that it's been at least 35-40 years of a serious attempt at youth development and almost 30 years of MLS. The American is not the right way.

Once again, people keep getting Landon's comment wrong. He said if you are an MLS team and you strive to be a top level league, go out and try to get the top players to get to that level. At least try to get Pulisic if you want to be on that level. And no, playing on the BENCH on a big European club is not going to make you better. No matter how good the talent is that you are watching from the sidelines. It's ridiculous.

Nobody talking about what a trash pitch that T&T played on ..that made a massive difference lol. When you play on sloppy pitches it just equalizes talent to a massive degree. The quicker guys are running in mud negating one of their big advantages. The fact Concacaf allows their teams to have pitches like that is a joke. I've seen it at a number of central american stadiums, just absolute 3rd world level of pitches that they have no drainage. That's an embarrassment. Canada literally just played there and the field had like a foot of water on it so they delayed the game 1 day and Canada was forced to play on slop. Mexico, US and Canada are the only places I've seen where the pitches rarely get to those kind of unplayable conditions.

Great to hear this unfiltered commentary from those on the inside. I guess I am inferring that there was a disconnect between European and MLS players. It's too bad, as though I am not in the dressing room and they are, the players on that squad didn't seem to have "arrogance." Still tough to explain no result against T&T. But, I think we do have a lot of quality young players looking to 2026.

The REAL reason the USMNT failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup was because numbskull coach Bruce Arena started his favorite gonzo centerback from their days with the LA Galaxy, Omar Gonzales (who by that time had gone to play in Liga MX) instead of Geoff Cameron, who was playing in the English Premier League. Omar was well known for his guaranteed 2-3 brain farts per game (much like Zack Steffan later on), and he killed the USMNT qualification chances by scoring an own goal. Had the score been tied 1-1 instead of 1-2, the USMNT would have advanced.

@gandalfgreyhame3425
@gandalfgreyhame3425 6 ай бұрын
@@ademirsegura6307 Well, it's a bit more complicated than that. MLS was very complicit in the failure of the 2018 qualification, but this was mainly because several of the key players from the 2014 campaign were sucked in by MLS after the 2014 World Cup. Because of the success of the USMNT in the 2014 campaign, MLS was able to get better deals and got a lot richer and so brought in Tim Howard, Dempsey, Bradley, and Altidore (as well as Jermaine Jones, who was not on this T&T match roster) on these special "designated player" deals. These players basically got WORSE playing in MLS, but were still either starters or subs in this match. Because of MLS, there were a lot fewer Euro-based top players at the time. MLS during this time had also offered easier opportunities for younger players - those who chose to go and stay in MLS, like Acosta and Arriola, never developed fully, never amounted to true international quality. MLS's worst crime during this period of time was by far its mal-development of the young American players - almost 10-15 years worth of young American players were lost to MLS as a result and became useless MLS scrubs. Arena chose to play these MLS scrubs and Omar Gonzales (who was in Liga MX at the time but an Arena favorite from his time with the LA Galaxy) instead of Premier League based Geoff Cameron and Tim Ream (Ream had joined Fulham, who were in the Championship at the time). And so the only Euro-based players who played in the match were Bobby Wood, Yedlin, and Pulisic. When you look at the list of MLS scrubs who were in this match, you can easily see how and why this team lost - Darlington Nagbe, Paul Arriola, J. Villafana were STARTERS in this match, and Acosta and Feilhaber were subs.

we need to be more centered around soccer in the United States. The skill gap that we constantly talk about is system! International clubs have a system with actual identity, US soccer used to be based on English football I know cause I played…meanwhile England and Europe for that matter was becoming based on tiki taka. our coaches new nothing about teaching modern skills because skills are based upon concepts.
