Del, I woke this morning, not feeling at all well. Your enthusiasm and detail made me feel much better... Thanks. When I have railed up a stairway and left "gaps for the decorator" I have been moaned at... but as a decorator myself, I too, look for these things which make the final product stand out from the crowd. My pet hate were the carpenters who would leave nails proud and mitres on architraves not "meeting" with the comment "leave that for the decorator". You can see why I gave new work and site work a body swerve in latter years. Cheers, Bob.

Hi bud🖐I agree that ommiting that corner newel and pushing the handrail over would have made the half newels at the bulkhead more symmetrical, but I have to stick to the design that's been approved, plus the oak floor capping isn't, generally, wide enough to span from the apron to the spindle base rail🤔Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del

Doing stairs is satisfying isn't it. One of the old guys that taught me to do stairs born in the 1920's. He used to cut out the shape of the handrail in the newel about 5mm. Thus when you pull the tenon in you don't see any shoulder. He reckoned it allowed for movement without any joint opening up. A quick template and rout job and boy the joints looked sweet. But like we said the other day time is money these days. You can do a good job. Perfection is a luxury.

Excellent. It makes sense to have that slight overhang on the half newel as many bulk head walls wouldn’t be as plum as that brand new one. Trying to plum up an arrow straight bit of oak with a plastered wall that’s on the p1ss could be futile. Ace job as ever.

always have great videos. very well executed don't wanna sound OCD but what is the reason for the second newel post on landing could a mitred handrail like the left hand side look better and the half newel and nosing junction could possibly be coped instead of a bevel-off cut on half newel...but overall very neat job well done del
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
You've hit the nail on the head there PC, and I think loosing the extra newel and mitreing the handrail to copy the other side would have made a more symmetrical finish at the bulkhead, but ultimately, I have to follow the plans to a certain degree🤓Great comment and thanks for watching😎Cheers Del

I use a biscuit joiner for connecting pieces like that, which I bought about 13 years ago a dewalt which is good enough, the lamello is more stable and has more ajustment features but more expensive. The router bit I use for longer cuts and replace the cookie wit a 3 mm ply strip. And I agree on the detail looks good like that. 👍 that’s enough English writing for today😊

Another good video. Enjoy watching all of your work. One thing I would of done a bit different would of been taken slightly more out of the landing newel so the half newel on the wall would of ended up flush with the edge or a tad back rather than past the wall. Not sure if you had restrictions as not to of taken any more out of the newel. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Hi Jamie🖐I know exactly what you are describing, and I think it would have looked better if there was no 2nd newel, and the handrail was just mitred in a similar way to the other side, so the half newel margins at the bulkhead could have been even🤔Thanks for your comment bud 😎Cheers Del

Hi there🖐If possible, I would cut a really short tennon on the end of the handrail, say 10mm, then cut a corresponding mortice in the existing half newel, and then 'flex' it in place by pushing it against the full newel at the other end. Then, as you suggest, screw up diagonally from the underside of the handrail👍Cheers Del
