Sturgill's last album was a departure from Country. Best I can describe is Southern Rock. He upset many of his Country fans. I say more power to him, if he wants to explore.

That line about giving a good girl a ring is songwriting gold. Sturgill is another in a long line of "outlaw" country performers. Another guy that filled that role was Darell Scott. He was a brilliant songwriter and guitarist, but was roundly rejected by Nashville. Everyone else ended up recording his songs, including this song which was recorded by the (formerly) Dixie Chicks. I been bamboozled before by artists and their artifice, but I believe Sturgill is the real deal. That said, life ain't fair and the world is mean.

It’s unfortunate that he said he wouldn’t make more than 5 albums and he’s already made 4.

Love Sturgill. He is the real deal. He was snubbed by the CMA so busked outside of the venue on the same night. He also helped support Tyler, Colter and Margo. Should try some of his other stuff. Try sea stories and ain't always flowers

I sure can hear Waylon Jennings every time Sturgill sings a song...and that 's a very nice thing. I like this guy.

“But he raised a proud coal miners daughter and I'm proud to be her son” is a reference to coal miners daughter - Loretta Lynn
@Garyj1784
@Garyj1784 4 жыл бұрын
What??? No... The reference is to his grandfather who was a proud coal miner, that raised a daughter (Sturgills mother)

justin gary nope.. I could be wrong but pretty sure it’s just a double entendre. I thought it was pretty obviously referring to one of the most classic country songs of all time. Wouldn’t break it down into “son of a coal miners daughter” otherwise

@@norki.e His mother's family were coal miners, and he is the first male on her side of the family to not work in a strip mine or deep mine. (straight from his wikipedia)

JC yea I’m totally aware that his grandfather was a coal miner. I posted this thinking it was the most obvious part of the song but I could be wrong.😂 they’re both Kentucky natives and I’m sure he grew up listening to her

Nora it was more than likely a slight nod to that song.. but his verse there is penning him to be from a family that checks a few boxes of country musics cliche yet he is basically saying he doesn’t need to check all of them and lie because he’s doing his own thing. The whole song is about his life and how he doesn’t fit the country music “outlaw” stereotype as much as record labels wanted him to. He does his own thing and doesn’t give a fuck.

This song is essentially sturgill saying he’s got a few things that make him fit the “country” narrative that labels want him to, but he doesn’t care about where he doesn’t. His dad being a trucker but never wrote country music. His papaw being a coal miner but never raisin hell. Trading in his truck for a van. The irony is in him sorta admitting he doesn’t have all the cliches mainstream Nashville wants him to, yet this song is more country than 98% of the shit they play on country radio these days. He even penned a line on here about how you won’t hear him on the radio but he’ll be in a smoky bar.. basically he’s just doin his thing and doesn’t care what fits the “image” and what doesn’t.

The line white line he’s talking about is cocaine. but i’m a way he’s referring to him not making music for a long time.

The 94 Club yeah, that’s part of it though. He is basically saying fuck off to main stream while staying true. “Sold the truck for a van, hit the road with a 3 piece band” was referring to him never giving up and hitting the road and still doing shows. Compare to big busses and concerts. The “most outlaw thing I ever did, was give a good woman a ring” is a pun talking shit on these people who won’t let real outlaw country (Waylon, cash, etc) go and how these new pussies try to play the part. The song is really deep and seems short, but rocks. Thanks bro, been a big fan of the show and I’ll send you some other jams to check out shortly.

I always thought his his reference to swaping his truck out for a van, meant mini van. A lot of men with with a wife and kids end selling their cool rides for mini vans. So everyone and their stuff can get transported around.

I stopped listening to mainstream country radio stations- with the exception of a few tried and true country artists that have been able to hang on- I don’t enjoy the new pop country. I listen to Streaming channels that play outlaw country or music from the previous decades and new more traditional country and the like. I enjoy Stugill and that style. I love your station- it resonates with people like me who love real country music!

When he says he swapped the truck out for a van. That means he started a band and they are traveling from bar to bar in the van to carry equipment and band members. This is what bands do when they don’t have the support of the big music labels so no tour bus etc.

In that line he mentions “long white line” that’s another one of his songs about being on the road it’s kinda of a reference to the lost highway from classic country lore
@MWM92688
@MWM92688 4 жыл бұрын
What he’s saying in that last line is he didn’t sell out he had to get his own van and drive himself around to shows, he’s not a big star being driven around in a big fancy tour bus.

I think it’s about how he has more talent than those on the labels and radio but won’t get recognized because he isn’t pop, life isn’t fair and the world is mean. True artists don’t get the recognition
