The North Face Casaval Hybrid Hoodie Review - Summit Series Active Insulation
The North Face Casaval Hybrid Hoodie is the newest active insulation piece in the Summit Series. (out Fall 2022) It is made for stop and go, high output activities. I used it for splitboarding here in Colorado, in temps 0-20F.
The fit was very good and surprised me that the large was not too small ( I usually go with XL).

I believe that jacket is actually the Summit Series Casaval Hybrid Hoodie (hybrid comes in jacket version, too), and not the Casaval Hoodie as mentioned and titled. TNF makes the Summit Series Casaval Hoodie. They Hybrid version is 60g body and 40g hood, perforated back panel, as noted the stretch, quick drying under arms and and hem stretch-woven fabric which is supposedly is the "hybrid" in the hybrid version. non-Hybrid is 40g body and 25g hood and sleeves, perforated back and chest panels, napoleon pocket. I love TNF ventrix. I think it's really the only actual "active" midlayer, because of ventrix perforations which open and close varying with movement. All the other supposed active midlayers are just more static porous fabric where wind will cut through and heat will vent out. The beauty of ventrix is that it will block wind and retain heat, which is the whole purpose of ventrix perforations for stop and go activity. When you stop, the perforations aren't opened, which helps to retain heat in and block wind. It performs well as an outer most layer (weather permitting) because of that, which is also part of the whole layering system of the Summit Series: adding additional layers as weather dictates.

Hello Han! Great intel. You are correct on the naming as well. When I met with North Face last winter to do a backcountry ski trip and test this out, I did not have any more info on the jacket other than the sample tag. You nailed it on the details. Thanks for the help!

I got this cheap $30 TNF fleece in 2020 at REI just cause the price. I never intended it to be a serious part of my setup. Yeah.. 4 years later that ugly jacket is still my lightest and warmest fleece. I got a $100 LLBean fleece I hated.. Only my Mountain hardware one is as nice but I don't like to wear it around the house. TNF knows jackets and fleece. Even the zipper is super light and strong.. it weighs nothing but keeps me warm down to like 40*.. lower if I put a hardshell over it.

@@pjo113 Very similar to Proton LT. To me proton feels a tad warmer, but all in all they are pretty much interchangeable. Also Proton only come with the hood this year while Casaval also offers a hoodless version.

Ohhhh, that is a tuff one. Depends on the conditions and use. Overall, the Atom is great for daily use or layering. For splitboarding (or other high output activities) I might opt for the Casaval overall.
