Update on the conflict in Ukraine for March 3, 2024...
- Ukrainian forces continue falling back west of Avdeevka;
- Ukraine continues carrying out drone attacks inside Russia despite the Western media admitting it has little to no impact on the Russian population;
- While the West continues debating funding for Ukraine, the primary problem still stems from the fact there is not enough arms and ammunition to buy with the money in the first place;
- What arms Ukraine still has suffers from an inability to properly sustain and maintain it, as the US DoD has admitted and now a growing number or articles in the Western media confirm;
- Claims that Ukraine has shot down a large number of Su-34 aircraft remain unverified, even if true this rate of success is unsustainable for Ukraine;
- Germany is investigating alleged leaks of officials discussing the transfer of German-made cruise missiles to Ukraine including for attacking the Crimean bridge;
- Even if the Crimean bridge is destroyed, Russia can still sustain both the civilian economy and its military facilities on the peninsula;

The entire conversation was approx. 38 minutes long, they also discussed other targets within theRussFed mainland proper like Vladivostok which is an actual R city, the HQ of the SMO. As well as some soft unsecured civilian targets, they claimed where mostly for PR rather than strategic value. This would basically constitute a first strike by GermanyOTAN on theRussFed, legally ipso facto according to the UN charter justifying retaliation as a casus belli.

I was in a mechanized infantry brigade during my time in the army. The number of support personnel needed to keep a mechanized brigade going is mind-blowing. There is no way Ukraine can support all of this equipment the West is sending them.
@RN1441

Based on how Ukraine is acting in terms of reinforcements and mobilization, I read the situation as being equipment and ammunition limited. Over the past year they've gone from sending fresh local units to respond to Russian advances, to sending fresh units from farther away, to not generally sending new units (most recently they did send 3rd Azov, but it wasn't enough at Avdievka). Meanwhile, rather than a large mobilization wave to raise fresh units they seem to be mostly just replacing losses in existing units. I read this as them being unable to train, equip, transport or sustain additional units due to supply limitations. Otherwise it makes no sense to me, but I'd like to hear your perspective as someone who has been on the inside.
@sbeers88

@@RN1441 I don't know why YT deleted my reply to you, but I will try again. Basically, it takes one year to train a solider to be worth anything. My school was four months. Even after that, I only had a rudimentary understanding of my job. It takes at least two years to train a soldier to be any good at their job. Ukraine is pulling 40 year old men off the streets, giving them two weeks, maybe, of training and telling them to go out there and fight. There seems to be no support units at all. Only bullet catchers. It can't go on much longer.

@sbeers88 I disagree. The conclusion I came to, during my two times at war, is that individual soldier skills and field craft aren't nearly as important as command training. As long as the individual troops have basic training in land nav, small unit tactics (up to company live), their pers/support weapons, and vehicle maintenance, they will probably be fine if the people commanding the battle are competent and well trained.

Many pundits talk about the Russians advancing to capture villages etc which is the traditional way of thinking about warfare as fighting over and for territory. The way I see it is the Russians want to maintain contact with and pressure upon the enemy... and as they do that the enemy eventually buckles and pulls back Then the Russians move forward (or advance) to maintain contact and pressure. There may be some particular locations of local tactical importance which the Russians will try to capture... but there are also places they will hold back from capturing because it is more effective to let the enemy hold it and feed reserves into it. It is a very cold hearted calculus but I think that is what Russia doing.

Ukraine believes that by summer Russia could breakthrough - Bloomberg. "The battlefield situation is becoming increasingly grim as Ukrainian forces attempt to hold back Russian attacks, conserving ammunition." Basically its not rocket science what is happening. Ukraine Defences are collapsing across the front, Ukraine isn't able to conduct troop rotations because they are under pressure from Russian attacks everywhere, they are retreating and not to secondary defence lines (they don't exist aka Avdiivka) but running to just get away. The Russians are advancing rapidly, Air Defenses are being destroyed, limited manpower left, whilst Syrsky Blames Commanders. It is a Russian Stream roller slow and melodical War of Attrition and we are not even watching a Russian Major Offensive yet.

In World War Two the Americans made weapons that were easy to produce and maintain like the Sherman tank. Unlike the over-engineered German Tigers and Panthers, the Sherman was very easy to maintain in the field. Although it was technically inferior to these German machines, they were good enough for government work. Besides, American industry by 1944 was able to pump out nearly 2000 Sherman tanks each month. Which just goes to show that quantity has a quality of its own? Furthermore, weapons like the Sherman were designed to be used by people with only a limited amount of training? They were not gold plated like the M1A1 Abrams, which is totally over-engineered and complex. Of course, overly complex and expensive weapons are the byproduct of military industrial complex that places profit over purpose?

I was impressed by the story about the Russian women's anti-aircraft gun team. Unexpectedly, German tanks broke through to their positions when they were bypassing Stalingrad. These women could have rightfully retreated because they did not have anti-tank shells. However, they aimed their cannon at direct fire and began to destroy the German infantry accompanying the tanks. These women died one after the other, but they continued to shoot. The German attack and the encirclement of the Soviet troops was thwarted because the German tanks did not dare to continue the attack without infantry support. However, all the women died.

If NATO forces try it on in Ukraine against Russia. I'm almost certain, China would no longer hold back as Russia's major ally and move immediately on Taiwan. The US military-industrial complex is working at its limit now and could not possibly produce the necessary hardware for yet another major war.... as you have said Brian numerous times. Most of us are bright enough to know, that going up against not one, but 2 military superpowers and several very well equipped 'rouge' states, is not a great idea.

During various US adventures in the Middle East, Australian jets/helicopters of US origin were often grounded due to parts issues. Repair turnaround times for various systems sent to US OEMs, already 12 to 18 months became longer as US Navy/ Air Force equipment took priority, and Australia and others were sent to the back of the line. Now it is worse as repair depots are now more centralised, many tasks have been privatised, and "in time" production lines have no spare capacity. This situation has led to the demise of a 46 aircraft fleet of MRH90 helicopters that cannot be supported in any reasonable time by France, Italy, Germany etc with repair turnaround times of 18 to 24 months, (an inventory of spare parts being prohibitively expensive or unavailable).
@n3rdy11

As a German I was aware of the shitty reputation of the MRH90, but somehow I assumed it was a "German military only" issue because that's how all the local reporting makes it out as and the generally shitty reputation of Bundeswehr readiness. I did not realize that the problem extends way past Germany, apparently these MRH90 are so dangerous that Australia would rather scavange theirs for parts, burrying the rest, than giving the to Ukraine, that's crazy.

*Avdeevka Denouement: Russian Momentum Turning Point* An excerpt : It is the age of paradox in warfare: where de rigueur total dispersion of forces appears to make high casualty densities obsolete, yet the entire length of the battlefield is overwatched by the most unprecedentedly powerful and accurate systems in history, like Iskanders, Kinzhals, Zircons, HIMARs, etc., which allow the carrying out of near-instantaneous kill-chains-from detection to transmit/distribution, to fire order within moments. This is why the only way to fight and advance has come down to dispersing your strategic operations over the widest possible scale, so that the end goal becomes the totality of victory rather than specific operational objectives like: “Capture this area of cities.” Such a task requires the concentration of forces, from divisions, brigades, battalions, whose every staging action is monitored with almost total transparency by the enemy. *This ‘war of the future’ will be won by the most flexible, resilient, and adaptable force-the force which can pull punches, use feints, and reorientations all along the entire combat line in the most expedient manner. Russia is showing this today by utilizing a confounding rotation of active fronts to not only unbalance the AFU, but to stress their mobility and logistics to the extreme. When you have the advantage in logistical infrastructure and facility, you can ‘daze’ your opponent by conducting small operations across a scattered range of fronts, causing them great stress in trying to keep up.* In the Avdeevka battle, we saw Ukraine being forced to pull significant amounts of elite units from several fronts like Zaporozhye and Bakhmut to reinforce the crumbling Avdeevka lines. When that finished, Russia launched a Zaporozhye attack, overrunning depleted AFU positions there as a result, with AFU unable to reinstate reserves fast enough. The same goes for the Kupyansk and Kremennaya regions: reports spoke of AFU’s desperate troop pulls from Kupyansk to bolster defenses in northwest Bakhmut, where Russia has likewise started a series of attacks. It’s like pricking a spinning drunk with a needle from every side-he hardly knows where he’s being hit, nor has time to orient himself correctly. Lacking logistical mobility-in the form of physical haulers like HETs, transports, etc.-Ukraine gets the worst of it in being forced to constantly run around plugging leaks in the flooding deck. Read in further well articulated detail at ; simplicius76.substack.com/p/avdeevka-denouement-russian-momentum

@@off6848 They did not discuss modifying SCALP, they only brought up SCALP/Storm Shadows when discussing if they could outsource creating the targetign package for the Taurus to the Brits or Americans. That was the biggest topic of the conversation and their biggest problem to deploying and using the Tauraus ASAP; The Taurus need to be programmed with a flight-path before launching, a targeting package needs to be made for them, the SCALP/Storm Shadow work in a similar way. This not only requires special hardware, it requries special expertise and training, Ukraine lacks both. For the SCALP/Storm Shadows it's apparently Brits and Americans who do it for the Ukrainians, inside Ukraine. But the Bundeswehr does not want to send its own people, and hardware to Ukraine, as that would be very clearly participating in the war and the German parliament would never greenlight such a deployment. They also can't just send the planing hardware to Ukraine, as they don't have enough of it, German industry will need a few months to manufacture spares for Ukraine. That's why they were brainstorming ideas how the Bundeswehr could create the targeting packages in Germany, and then somehow get them to Ukraine to the Taurus, without directly implicating the Bundeswehr. Among the approaches they came up with was doing it physically by having somebody drive across the Polish/Ukrainian boarder in a car, another idea was putting Bundeswehr people with the private German contractors responsible for delivering/maintaining the Taurus, that's also when they brought up the possibility of just outsourcing it to the Brits or Americans, which they jokingly referred to as "all these Ukrainians in civilian clothes with American accent".
