Helmet cam video footage from Ukraine shows a Ukrainian MG3 team engaging Russian forces across the Dnieper River back in autumn.
The Russians got spotted by a drone and the men decided to engage their position with the belt fed machine gun on a distance.
After they undloaded the entire belt they left their position because the Battle of Kherson was largely fought with artillery and a prolonged stay at the same position after the engagement increased the risk of being targeted by Russian artillery.
Ukraine received at least 130 MG3 machine guns from Germany.
The number of MG3s sent by other countries who also operate MG3 is unclear.

They actually slowed down the cyclic rate of the MG3 to save on ammunition and it still eats that whole belt in a few short bursts. MG3's can have a fire rate of more than 1200 rounds a minute. Damn fine weapon no matter when or where it came from.

This is actually not a MG3 but an italian version of this gun made by Beretta an called MG42/59. You can distinguish it by the missing flak sights, the different muzzle and of course by the slower fire rate of about 800 rpm comparing to the 1200 rpm of the MG3. The MG3 features a more 'rrrrrp'-like sound although not as fast as the WWII MG42. During my service time, I had a thorough training on the MG3... a real beast imo.

While I agree that they likely could have found a better position there are also factors that we dont know about. @@quinnfell3824 There might have been a plethora of external factors, that is absolutely correct. War is chaotic, and you can easily loose focus after days of being under adrenaline pretty much constantly. Which is why you get trained, trained and trained again so you have certain things ingrained so much that you can function properly even under those circumstances. Especially for an important weapon like a machine gun. So in my eyes what is happening here is just a lack of training or just sheer exhaustion.

*their. Then again, the mg3 is so damn easy to mass produce and its parts so easily replaceable, the damn thing is just everywhere and just fucks up whole positions when it sees targets. The fact that they reduced the rpm from 1200 to 900 made its barrel and bolt last longer, then they started using an even heavier bolt which reduced rpm to 700 made the damn thing last EVEN LONGER and made the gun easily controlable within bursts and made ammunition run longer. That things ease of use, versatility and relative lightweight features makes the modern mg3 loved by its users and feared by it targets.

"The machine gun has an automatic-only trigger mechanism and a cross-bolt safety in the form of a button that is operated by the shooting hand (in its "safe" position the bolt release is disabled). The weapon fires from an open bolt. The cyclic rate can be altered by installing different bolts and recoil springs. A heavier bolt uses more recoil energy to overcome inertia, thus slowing the action. On MG 3 machine guns, two types of bolts are available, with standard weight (about 650 g (22.93 oz)) for the standard 1,000-1,200 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire, and with extra weight (about 900 g (31.75 oz)) for a slower 800-950 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire. Those bolts also are used along with different return springs."

Hi, you make some very good points about rates of fire. The trouble with a lot of our armchair warriors is they work on theory. Actual soldiers on the ground have to actually carry the heavy MG and the ammunition, it does not take long to get through all the ammunition at hand. What then? I ask this as a Ex Para, what we dropped with is what we had, even as a LMG squady I had to count my rounds. I have seen HMG fire at a twelve foot square target and miss after a full belt; and one time we had some camels run across the range without getting hit. It ain’t as easy as some blokes think! I believe this is an even more rare variant, the M59. The cyclic rate of the 59 was exacerably slower than the familiar 42/3 fire rate. The bundewswehr fielded the "59" in 7.63 nato though with a much heavier bolt which slowed the fire rate dramatically down to about 700 as seen here. They would quickly phase that bolt system out for the lighter more familiar MG3/42 bolt to restore its rate of fire. The native fire rate of the MG3 straight from rheinmental is about 35 percent faster.

They were also provided a number of Yugoslav M52's which retain the original 7.92x57 Mauser cartridge and don't have the NATO brake so they also retain the original 1200 rounds per minute rate of fire. However, a human spotter would be extremely dangerous seeing how they are usually exposed one way or another. Just put lead in the area of the target. That’s basically their RoE.

The only difference is that the fire rate has been dropped on the Zastava M53 (assuming the same on the German MG3). But over all, ill choose a M42 over a M249 SAW on the modern battle field.
