He was always my favorite of the Scorpions guitarists, and this is my favorite of their songs. The Scorpions, a band that over the years had more guitar talent in it than any band has a right to. This is the song I recommend to people to show them how a brilliant guitarist transcends mere metal shredding and takes it to a higher plane. Ulrich Roth, always a class act.

In Virgin Killer tracks, such as Catch Your Train, he sounds a lot like Michael Schenker IMO, but yes, I consider this guy as originator of "neoclassical shred" subgenres along with Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen

Uli belongs on the same pedestal as Page, Clapton, Beck, etc. His contributions are just as worthy. Even more so than some of the "Guitar Gods"
@Andy000Burns8 жыл бұрын
+PGeorge61 Much more so!!! Page and Clapton inspired a plethora of insipid, derivative, and conventionally boring pentatonic wanna-be rock players who've done nothing but drive the genre into cliche-dom. Uli took the psychedelic vibe of hendrix into a world that was never before heard. Alternate picking over strings, the phyrgian scale, unconventional chord voicing's , the guy really was the first shredder ever.
@michaelmcasey7 жыл бұрын
He's countless levels above all of those guys.

Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin led the way in the 1970s with styles that incorporated aggressive speed, technical precision, and harmonic sophistication. Their technically virtuosic and complex styles of music have been cited as an influence by a number of prominent rock and metal musicians.
@rockerlawyer7 жыл бұрын
I don´t think you´re wrong, but those guys are not rockers. Among rockers, the use of minor scales along with rock/classical mix began with Uli, Blackmore, Schenker and Jan Akkerman. And Uli was definitely the one out of those four that went deep in that path
@roguenation7 жыл бұрын
Tomas SB The jazz fusion guitarist's speedy rock-oriented guitar solos demonstrated to many rock metal/guitarists that they didn't have to be slaves to the pentatonic scale, legato technique, and the 1st and 3rd fingers of their fretting hand.

Yes like a true jazz or classical musician - you always resolve or return to the main melody to tell your bandmates you are about to end.
@bpabustan2 жыл бұрын
@Joshua Mezza you basically quote the main melody again to indicate others you are done improvising. If you listen to a typical jazz recording, the track usually quotes the main melody at the end in order to finish the track off

Uli Jon Roth is a living legend to professional guitar players and composers. His career path always steered away from popular music into experimental, progressive and psychedelia, so he's not nearly as well known as he should be. In addition to being so in tune with his instrument that he can pull of complex sweeps with no effort while grooving in 'the pocket', he's also musically correct, in the classical composition sense, with no falsetto shortcuts.
