I put the 36 volt 65 ah in my boat last year along with the Charge system kept one 12 volt AGM for cranking! Fish all day 10 to 12 hrs and all my batteries are 100 % in like 20 minutes when I plug them in! Truly amazing technology! Could have went with the 40 amp hr but it never hurts to have more! 👍

They may be expensive but they probably have a good warranty probably around 10 years, and if you look at replacing group 31 lead acid batteries over that same time period the overall cost is pretty close, not to mention you will get more charges out of them and at 50% on lead acid you start to slow down and with these you can drain them down to like 20%ish and still have full power. Which kit would you recommend for a 12v(cranking) and 24v(trolling motor) set up? I'm part of the B.A.S.S. Nation and do a good deal of tournaments in the summer and fall time.

Great video John. So just to make sure I understand, the charge is like an alternator and charges batteries during the day while you use trolling motor and big motor? I'm a rookie and it just seems kind of technical. I think you already explained it just confirming that it's that simple.

Okay, so I’m just a small boat, 55# thrust trolling motor, Garmin LS and 40HP tiller. Would you do 1 deep cycle lithium for trolling motor and another battery for electronics and LS and cranking? Keep cranking separate? Or how would you set up a small, 12V system for Garmin 106SV, LiveScope, outboard, and trolling motor? Suggestions? Thanks

Do you experience any issues running the 2 different sized 12 volt batteries in parallel? Battery manufacturers usually recommend only running the same size batteries in parallel.

I was looking at shallow water anchors today. I never had one for my boat. What Power Pole do you recommend for a 17ft aluminum bass tracker with a 20 h.p motor? I just wanted to run one considering the boat is light and not very big. I see some guys on my local lake only running one. thanks

All you may need is a single 4' but I would think about an 8' Blade. They are just so solid and dependable.

Are lithiums now approved for the Merc 4 stroke? I currently have two Helix 12s. One at console and one at bow with 360. I'm adding a Garmin 122SV with LS at the bow and am concerned the 31group AGM will not be enough. My Merc is a 2019 and I know when I bought it, they said AGM batteires only.

Other than the PP charge, do you need anything else for those lithiums to connect to for charging?

Without the PP Charge, the lithium’s can be charged with a regular charger but won’t get fully charged. They need a charger programmed for a higher amperage

If you want only a starting battery and using electronics, M3180-S 12v. If you want one only for electronics, the TM2470 is all the power you need at a very reasonable price.

John do you see any electronic interference with the charger switching between the 36 and the 12 volt side? It seems with the electronics sharing with the 36v system that wouldnt be a good thing. I wanted to see if you had seen any issues with that?

My Lowrance units were VERY clean last year when I had the Charge. Running straight power from battery to units helps eliminate a lot of interference.

Mercury does not recommend lithium for the new Pro XS, your thoughts on why and any potential issues with lithium on the new Merc's?

Lithium Pros works with all motor companies. I ran that battery all last year with that engine with NO issues

The issue is with charging a lithium battery directly from the alternator. The low resistance of lithium batteries pulls the maximum amount of amps from the alternator and potentially overheating it especially at idle when the alternator fan is not cooling as well due to the low rpms. I guess we'll see in the future if people are going through alternators or not.

John, hopefully this flags you for a response, but I fish rayburn and toledo. I'm constantly fighting winds, and I'm on that trolling motor full speed for lots of the day fighting that wind. Is a 36v 65ahr enough?

I am looking at lithium batteries. I am concerned about going with a single 36 v versus 3 -12 v. If the 36 v goes out I'm screwed

If one of your 3 12v goes out, you are also screwed. That’s why the Charge system is the key

Building “my ultimate” bay boat. I was going to go with 12v Lithium Pro cranking and 36v Lithium Pro for the TM with a Charge. Both Mercury and Suzuki said NO to lithium. They said the outboard would not be able to detect the charge on the lithium cranking battery and would over charge it to the point it could explode! Yikes! My dealer followed up with Power Pole and they knew about it and recommended AMG cranking and a 36v lithium for the TM. Check with your outboard vender before you run a lithium cranking battery!

@@JohnCrews I figured there were plenty of people running it. I was just relaying what Suzuki, Merc and Power Pole said when I asked for that setup based on this video. I found parts of the memo on a forum. They aren’t very definitive about weather a lithium will actually do any damage to your outboard or vice versa. They are pretty definitive about any damage caused by running a lithium will not be covered under warranty and they call out using AGM in multiple places. That’s good enough for me. I’m sure it’s fine, but that new outboard is way too expensive for me to take the chance. I’m still looking forward to seeing how the Charge works with a 36v lithium and a 12v Deep Cycle AGM. It might weigh a little more and charge a little slower but it’s still a huge improvement over a “regular” battery setup. Thanks for the video, it was super informative and inspired my whole battery system. Good luck this year!

@@JohnCrewsAs of 9/26/2022, Mercury has issued Service Bulletin 2022-19 stating that the listed engines will be permitted to use a Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery that is designed for engine cranking, as long as it meets the listed specifications: -2.1L 75-115hp Fourstroke, ProXS and SeaPro Models -3.0L 150hp Fourstroke, ProXS and SeaPro -4.6L V8 and 3.4L V6 175-300hp Fourstroke, ProXS, SeaPro and Verado Models -2.6L L6 200-400 Pro and Verado Models -7.6L V12 500-600hp SeaPro and Verado Models. -NO other engines approved at this time. Minimum Specs Required: -Chemistry/Format: Lithium IRON Phosphate designed for MARINE CRANKING USE. -Minimum Cranking Amps: 800A for 8 second minimum @ 20 Degrees F -Peak Charge Acceptance: 165A at 20-130 degrees F for one minute -Max Charge Alternator Size: 150A at 20-130 degrees F -Max Charge Voltage/Alternator Output: 14.8V -Reserve Capacity (RC25 @ 80F): 135 Minutes -Ingress Protection (IP rating): IP67 or greater. Cautions that use at temperatures below 32F may require additional equipment such as a battery heater. Bulletin also lists a Relion Battery that has been evaluated and meets the above requirements: RB100-HP.

No issues for a single day of fishing. I ran a 24v setup one year on tour with a 20’ bass boat. Lasted all day on a full charge, even 13 hour practice days when I run around on the TM

No, no, just no. No need to re invent the wheel. Yachts and other big boats solved these issues years ago via Auto Battery Combiners and Smart Chargers. Power need, battery type, and adequate circuit for YOUR needs, no one size fits all.

i'm with you. I have 2 issues. #1 is you shouldn't hook 2 batteries in parallel that aren't the same. #2 once you did that it is 1 power bank. You are running everything off that "bank". You aren't running certain things off 1 battery and other things off the other at that point.

Yeah lithium batteries are still far to expensive to be worth it. Sure when you are a sponsored angler, running the pro circuit you will say they are the best. Hell you will say what ever company is giving you the free shit is the best. What you wont say is the cost far outweighs the additional benefit. Just in case people didn't know that's about 5 grand worth of batteries he has sitting on the table and he almost certainly didn't pay for them out of his own pocket. Fuck that. Im not a cheap asshole or a hater. I just need to get my moneys worth out of a product and in the personal opinion of somethings that been running boats half his life. Lithium battery prices are still to high to be worth the additional benefit. With every product there is a point of deminishing returns and the returns you get from running lithium in your boat is just not worth the money you will spend.

I absolutely understand the benefit of lithium, but feel at their current price, they just aren't worth the money. To each is their own though. Others may see value in them where I dont.
