January 9, 2021: This week's #ShortTipSaturday video comes at the request of KZfaq user: Richard Johnson. Thanks, Richard!
In this video I cover 5 marine wiring tips that will help you avoid problems by doing it right the first time. If you're not a DIY'er, you can still use this video as a checklist to ensure the person you have doing your wiring is doing it the correct way and not cutting corners.
Whether you're wiring a trolling motor or new electronics, wiring things the correct way the first time will save you frustration and danger while boating. Choosing the right wire type and the correct wire size is crucial to good performance on the water.
If you have any questions about marine wiring, please leave them in the comments section below.

Very familiar sadly… A good friend spent big to have the John Deere 6081 in his charter fishing boat with the shop recommended by JD, the wiring harness grounds were un-tinned car stereo wire that said “bass Master” all over it. Not even punny… 🤦‍♂️🤬 Welding wire battery cables are another favorite of mine… 🤷‍♂️

@@TheWeekendAngler Thus they are hacks versus pros. Pros at least where I am from are licensed, and a big part of that license is professionalism. Being some kind of secret squirrel that wants his or her customer in the dark = Shady, Non-professional, hacks who probably do it to price gouge using inferior materials and scopes of work. So although I can sympathize with your experience, calling these crocked hacks "Pros" is a disservice to real Pros across all trades.

Very good video with tips that come at a good time. I'm about to remove my two power poles from my starting battery direct connect. I will connect to a Perko switch On/Off then run wires from the perko switch to the starting battery. I have to check size wire from power poles and I was thinking 10 gauge but could be 8 or 6. And I was going to buy at ACE Hardware. But I need "marine" grade and marine grade ring connectors to crimp. I am glad I watched this. Thank you!

Rewiring my Lowrance units two HDS 9's and one HDS 7. Plan on using wire size 10 awg tinned wires. What size breaker should I use at battery and is it ok to install a Blue Sea spade type fuse box instead of in line fuses (5amp) each wire in the battery compartment. Thank You
@TheWeekendAngler
@TheWeekendAngler 2 жыл бұрын
If it were me, I would run individual runs of 10ga wire for each unit. This make sure they get enough power, and batteries act as noise filters too. You can use a blue sea fuse box, but I'd go up to a feeder wire of at least 8ga. I'd probably use something along the lines of a 20 amp breaker by the battery if that's all you're going to run, or if you think you might add more circuits later I'd find the amperage rating of the fuse block and find a matching breaker. That will give you the best bang for your buck.

Hi Fast Ed putting an onboard charger in my aluminum boat I heard somewhere that I should not directly mount it to the aluminum in side the battery box because if you ever charge your boat in the water you can have problems if this is true then what should I put between the charger and the aluminum side in the battery box. Thanks Fast Ed

I run the noco genius onboard charger on a couple of my boats. The thing about the genius is it is completely sealed and the housing is a polymer that doesn't conduct electricity. I'm not sure that it would need to be isolated, but you could get a couple of pieces of 3/4" hdpe sheet. Screw/epoxy the hdpe to the boat and then attach your charger to the hdpe with shorter screws so it's isolated from the boat. That would prevent any issues when charging while on the water.

Awesome!! Thanks brotha!!! yea looks Iike gonna use 6gauge. The chart you put up call for 8gauge. But I’m gonna step it up to 6. One more question, as far as venting my center console is very large. That’s where I’m gona put my batteries for the trolling motor. It’s pretty large Almost 6’ of head space in there and fairly wide. Wider then most center console areas. There no need to worry about having to vent this area with batteries going in there now right? Would think it would be vented enough already. Also want to put the batteries in those battery boxes and strap them to the floor for protection. Considering there is a port o potty down there and also some storage stuff.ok to store them in the boxes right?

@@richardjohnson33755 I wouldn't worry about Inline fuses for the jumper wires when making 36v. The big thing is to come out of the 36v bank to a good circuit breaker before the long run of wire. Truth be told. The short jumpers would work like a fusable link in the off chance of a short.

Just spent over $1700+ on Marine grade connectors, bus bars, fuse boxes, wires. Buy anything for a boat your goin to pay dbl.- triple the amount normal elec. equipment cost. Heat shrink everything, I even use battery red corrosion spray grease on all lugs. Even though Im not much expert on boats but been mechanic on auto's & semi. Ive seen some nasty issues & melt downs do to wireing the wrong size. Which is the reason Ive recently purchased a bassboat that was advertised lake & tourn. ready, couldnt be any further from the truth. Been on water bout 30min. & trolling motor quit. 6 months later, I finally recieved all materials I need to redo wiring & 1st thing I find, somebody decided to use a lil 14ga wire to tie the TM pos. cable to plug wire together & no breaker. Therefore melting all connections together, burning up my Fortrex brushed motor thats goin to cost me over $400+ to replace. So, after checking most wires in back of boat. Ive decided since its off season to pull everything out & run all new everything. I just wish I understood all this new graphs / technology's. Could use all prayers possible😇🙏 Kinda Ol school, fat, half blind & disabled, so this is goin to test me mentally& physically..☺

How can I run wires from one breaker, close to battery, to second breaker that can act as switch, @ 5' from first breaker? Or, can I just install the switch breaker 5' from battery, but put fire retardant corrugated conduit around it? You can install a breaker at the proper location and then install another breaker to use as a switch wherever you want it along the line without causing too many problems. If I was wiring it, however, I'd put my breaker in the proper location and then use a switch and a high amperage relay to turn the power off and on to the trolling motor. I can't post pics in the comments, but if you send me a message through my Facebook page I'll be happy to draw you up a wiring diagram that would do exactly what you're wanting.

@thaxbutcher
@thaxbutcher 3 жыл бұрын
When using this breaker typically you would use 6ga coming from the battery to a main hott post with a 12-14ga jumper to this breaker, from there run it to the helm, same with a ground but no breaker. 14 is what i would use for lets say 25 29ft boat. Buy you a fuse panel, probably find some prewired and switches. Hook up the panel now you will have individual spots for 5, 10, 15, 20amp slots. This way the small fuses blow and only the breaksr flips if somethinf serious. But just for a troll motor perhaps 14ga with inline fuse holder and maybe a 20amp. But if your adding more like LEDS, bilge pump, stereo, etc do the panel. But hey thats just my knowledge do your own research before taking my word for it lol. But always use CRC spray save you the hassle of corrosion. 👍

I have a question for you on wiring specifically the gauges … I watched a video on testing your gauges because I noticed that neither one of the temp gauges was working in my Yamaha LS200 and I went to check them and the sending unit was only drawing 6V so I checked the battery … 8V … took it to be tested (it was a 2012 battery) and they said it was good!? Took it home rewired battery EXACTLY as I did and found that my starboard engine’s coil pack blew the 10A fuse? And I attempted to turn the ignition on and no gauge works? And the fuse is blown … 2 times over? Any suggestions?
@TheWeekendAngler
@TheWeekendAngler 2 жыл бұрын
If your battery is only providing 8 volts, then your systems are drawing additional amperage to compensate. Power (Watts) = Voltage x Amperage So if you have something drawing 12 watts, it will draw 1 Amp. Drop that voltage to 6 volts, and suddenly you need a 2 ampere draw to make up for it. This could definitely cause you to blow fuses. A fully charged battery should show around 12.7 volts. I'd check the voltage on your battery with a multimeter, and see where it's sitting. I would also perform a load test on the battery to check for voltage drop under load. I would be willing to bet the battery is toast, regardless of what the shop says. 2012 batteries are 9 years old. Flooded cell marine batteries usually do good to make it 5 years.

@@Son_of_Aragorn I'm not going to tell you it wouldn't work, but here's my only concern about that wiring. Sprinkler wire will usually have a jacket on it that is rated for direct burial. Marine wire will have a jacket that is rated for gasoline and other solvents because it's designed to be run through the bilge area of a boat. I'm hesitant to tell you to use marine wiring because I'm not sure how well the jacket would handle being buried. It depends on how your motor and batteries are set up. For instance, I have a separate starting battery for my outboard. When the outboard is running, the alternator charges the starting battery. It doesn't affect the trolling motor batteries though. The charging system on an outboard isn't that great in most cases and won't give you a lot of extra charge. Most of the trolling motors draw more amperage while in operation than your outboard charging system can replace.

Good info but the Pros already use these methods...because they're Pros. I made it a point to buy the tools and materials necessary to do my own boat electrical when needed because the real Pros are always busy.

I see a lot of hill billy wiring and it's not just DIYR's. I personally want people to know the correct and legal products and procedures because I have seen a few mishaps with injuries and death do to hack work.

Tinned wire is not the only legitimate wire to use on a boat, that something the pros would want you to know to get you to spend more money! Thats a myth. I have seen videos from some electricans saying it's mandated by ABYC not true, some have also said that un tinned wire wont last much more than a year. Some members of ABYC are companies that sell tinned wire.... Millions of people with boats and ships wired with untinned are not replacing thier cable every other year or it would have become standard decades ago. Boats have been wired with bare copper since around the 1880's. It's all about where and how you use it. Tinned wire is more corrosion resistant, yes but not by as much as you'd think, in most cases bare copper will give you well beyond the service life most people need anyway. If you insulate the un tinned wire with heatshrink connectors it's more than enough protection unless you make a habit of filling your wiring compartments with sea water and salt spray. The wires I bother to use double the price tinned for are the bilge pump wires on small craft since they are so important and the most likely to come into contact with salt water. On boats with high voltage and three phase pumps the cost would be intolerable. Automotive grade wires for road vehicles have come a long way since they started putting electronics in them. The thin walled stuff is more cut resistant and you get more copper for the same diameter. Something no one ever mentions is how some insulation jackets can chemically interact and break down when in contact with parts of your boat especialy styrene and spray foam insulation. For me thats much more of a concern that the conductor inside. I'd rather take the money saved and go up a gauge in size with a high quality jacket.

Because they would rather charge you $700 to rewire your boat than have you do it yourself ..

The title is deceiving, as what you have described is elementary grade knowledge. How's about some trouble shooting tips? Like where do all these in-line fuses originate. But , thanks. I'll check some of your other videos. Perhaps it's their.
