Kirby Allison talks about the cost and steps taken in the creation of his $20,000 smoke filtration system for the new studio smoking room to help purify the room of cigar smoke during shoots and when he just wants to have a cigar with his lunch or when in a meeting. He puts it to the test with special guests from halfwheel.com to see how fast the system works after hot boxing the studio with cigar smoke and then turning it on.
ABOUT THE SMOKE FILTRATION SYSTEM
The smoke filtration system is designed around the Camfil CamCleaner 2000, which is an industrial-grade filtration system that allows for both MERV-14 particle filtration and active carbon molecular filtration. The system has a capacity of 2,000 cubic feet a minute, which is insane! This allows the total volume of the air in my office studio to be exchanged once every 3-4 minutes. The result is over 25 air changes an hour, which quickly removes any and all visible smoke from the room. It is so effective that with two to three people smoking at the same time, there is practically no visible smoke at any time!
Another important component of the smoke filtration system is the independent air conditioner. This ensures that there is no positive air pressure to push smoke outside the room or any air return to pull smoke into the office HVAC. I also did not design any negative air pressure because the room is 100% sealed at the door. So, while smoking with the door shut, I am not worried about smoke escaping the room.
In addition to the CamCleaner, which filters the smoke particles and odors, I installed a fresh air exhaust, which is basically a roof-mounted commercial air exhaust fan (the same type used in a commercial kitchen) that is paired with a fresh air inlet (basically a hole in the roof). When the system is turned on, the fresh air intake opens up to allow fresh air to circulate. I generally leave this running overnight after I'm finished smoking to exchange the office air with fresh air to further remove any odors.
JANUARY 2020 UPDATE
I couldn't be any happier with the system. It totally exceeds my expectations. The CamCleaner 2000 is a BEAST that is so effective that I was actually able to dial the unit back from 2,000 CFM to 1,500 CFM. The smoke filtration is effectively silent thanks to the unit being being ducted in from an adjourning room.
I am also happier than I expected with the fresh air intake / exhaust system. Instead of leaving the CamCleaner running all night after I'm finished smoking, I instead switch on the fresh air intake system and allow it to exchange the air in the office with fresh air. This helps further remove any odors and prevent the air in the office from becoming stale.
WOULD I INSTALL THIS SAME SYSTEM AT HOME?
This is the $1,000 question. The short answer is no. Short a $3 mm + mansion, the system would be overkill for most residential applications. For one, the CamCleaner unit itself is quite large and would have to be located in an attic and then ducted down. And the ductwork would be quite extensive in order to get the system to function properly. One day... but not anytime soon for me.
Instead, for a home office or library, I think a commercial-grade air exhaust system that vents smoke and creates negative air pressure paired with a high-end consumer grade molecular air filter such as the IQ Air MultiGas (amzn.to/3fQwdqT). Would be ideal. you'd have to be careful to not have any air returns in the smoking room, which would contaminate the HVAC for the rest of the house. But, otherwise, good air exhaust and negative air pressure would prevent smoke from leaking out while the IQ Air MultiGas would eliminate any residual odors if left to run overnight.

I've just updated the description of this video with some additional notes. There is no question that this system would be overkill for most home applications. For one, working within the constraints of a residential home would be challenging, especially when it comes to creating the necessary ductwork. I am actually working on building a home (spec build), and I think that I am going to integrate a strong, commercial air exhaust system into my study to create as much negative pressure as possible and, essentially, pull fresh air from the rest of the house while venting the smoke. I'll then pair that with a good consumer molecular carbon filter, like the IQ Air MultiGas (amzn.to/3fQwdqT). What I like about this over the RabbitAir is that the unit uses actual carbon canisters. This means that you are getting MORE CARBON. My problem with the RabbitAir and other consumer air filters is that they contain almost no carbon... no carbon means no odor filtration. And when it comes to filtering odors, there is no question that simply replacing smoke with fresh air is your best bet. Most consumer filters don't exchange the air enough to make much of a difference when it comes to odor. This is why exchanging with fresh air is so important.

Brilliant system you've designed there. I love the overkill factor of it. Allows for plenty of headroom in terms of capability and I can't help but agree with you that it will result in less headache in the long run as the expectation for consumer grade products would be nowhere near that of commercial grade equipment standards.

The beauty of this system is that the filters and carbon canisters do not need to be replaced for two years. My old system requires the carbon to be switched out almost every 6-9 months at a cost of $600. This is a little more, but less often. Also one of the benefits of the larger, commercial unit.

It would have perhaps been better to have return of purified air delivered at floor level, thus supporting a draft for warm smoke air to rise up to ceiling extraction registers. But it was very quiet Kirby, I suspect quieter than the split-AC unit operating at 75% capacity?

Very informative and helpful. Where did the make-up air come from? If you exhaust 2000 cfm, then that air has to come from somewhere. What climate is your office building in, too? Curious, as I am in the process of designing a cigar room in my house, and am having to bring in make-up air at 100F, cool it down to 55F then reheat it so I don't overcool the space. That is a special unit, but you didn't have one of those. You used a ductless mini-split, which I also am looking at, but I don't need both. I'd love to read your response. Thanks.

Kirby - Curious to know why you chose to go the filtration route opposed to the exhaust route? I was recently hanging with Gary Kolsaire at The Tobacco Shop in Ridgewood, NJ who has a Davidoff Lounge. His recommendations were more on the exhaust route for their lounge. My friends are always concerned about preserving the air conditioning, my route has just been for exhaust and running the AC heavier during smoke sessions. But, we've got a new studio space that's 75,000 cu. ft. so I'm looking for new approaches. Also, where did you place the duct vents to the CamCleaner in relation to your smoking position? And lastly, was there a purpose behind the cigar selections during the Hot Box Session? I noticed only you were smoking a Habana.
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 2 жыл бұрын
If you have a ton of air to pull from, the exhaust route is definitely the easiest route. But you have to have a very large volume of air to pull from. In the case of the studio, we have to keep the door closed during filming, so exhaust wouldn’t work for us. That said, I did install an exhaust fan to help bring in fresh air after smoking. However, it also vents all of our beautiful A/C.

@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 2 жыл бұрын
When the Camfil Camclean filter is running, we really don't need negative air pressure because (1) the room is very well-sealed at the door and (2) the room has an independent, self-contained HVAC system via the mini-split. The air exhaust system is really meant to exchange fresh air overnight. The only limitation of this particular design is that the HVAC does not provide a source for fresh air. This is solved by the air exhaust system.

@@kirbyallison heh, I can tell you are not familiar with indoor grow operations. Trust me, even one tiny plant is enough to stink up an entire house. The system I laid out could probably give your 20,000 system a run for its money. The can-lite filters are massive activated carbon filters that can handle a large grow room

I don’t how high quality the filtration system is, there is no universe that exists where my wife allows smoking in the house. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Why don't you just vent it outisde ?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a sealed room so that it doesn’t leak the smoke to the rest of the office. And venting requires a massive amount of fresh air to pull from. Plug the end of a straw with your finger; doesn’t matter how hard you suck, you won’t move any air. Same principle for homes / rooms. Unless you’re pumping in a bunch of fresh air, there is only so much air you can “exhaust” out. The result is that you don’t actually get much air turnover.

Yeah. That one missed the QC… relying too much on spellcheck and not enough on actual thinking. Sorry!
