About Stepic:
Stepic isn't just a powerful and versatile polyphonic step sequencer. 8 additional and fully integrated modulation sequencers make it a true sound shaping tool. Use them to automate any parameter (e.g. Filter Cutoff, Wavetable Position, Effect Amount) of your favorite synthesizers or effect devices. With its support for MIDI CC, Stepic offers you parameter control for both software plug-ins and hardware devices.
By assigning different tempos and sequence lengths to the modulation sequencers, Stepic lets you create deep, polyrhythmic parameter progressions that add a lot of movement and uniqueness to your sound. And if that's not enough, start to bring the 200+ randomization options into play ;-)

I wish there was a demo making trance music at 130-bpm. 😋 and also making a track to see how it all comes together. 🤓👍 I usually use BlueARP VST Plugin for making trance music, using 5 to 6 notes at a time along with triads. But Stepic looks more up to date as far as features and abilities.

Thanks Jon! I think I am going to have to go back and watch the section where you copy over the midi to the DAW and figure out what is playing, ie; stepic or the midi in the DAW. What I have been doing is figuring out what I like and then turning off Stepic by disabling Stepic in the chain. I use Ableton Live, so its actually a max device that then opens up the plugin, which is a bit confusing, but maybe that adds more functionality to Stepic in Live, not sure.
@devicemeister
@devicemeister 8 ай бұрын
You are correct in your assumption. The Max for Live version of Stepic offers you several functions that the VST3 version does not. Firstly, through its Live-Mapping mode, you can automate any parameter in Live, including all of its stock plugins. Additionally, you can load the Max for Live version as a MIDI effect in the same channel as your synth. This is not possible with a VST3 sequencer.

Hi. Stepic is near perfect. The only minor quibble I have is with the naming of notes to the left of the note lane. For example, when you select F minor, as you do in the video, the notes are displayed as: F G G# A# C C# D# Note that B and E are missing, and we have two variations of both G and C. Traditional notation would be: F G Ab Bb C Db Eb Note how every note letter (ABCDEFG) occurs exactly once. This goes for every key and mode. Every letter appears exactly once. I know it makes no difference in functionality or sound, but I hope you can fix the correct note name labels in some future revision. Other than that, bravo!

Idea: What about another midiplay mode that goes through your sequence at the exact rate you hit the keys on your keyboard? So ignoring whatever rate or tempo you have set, just playing the next step with each note you play. Might be good for drum pads. Maybe I'm just tired and that is pointless, but to me it seems cool. To get a killer sequence going with all kinds randomness and repeats in there, and then be able to "play" it in one step at a time, to either get a more human feel or to just experiment.

Are you looking for a feature that advances Stepic's transport by one step with every incoming note instead of starting over from the beginning?
@cobraofearth

maybe this doesn't make any sense though, because it would have to ignore the divisions, and swing to work like intended. .

Great vid thanks so much ! I tried to do the pattern switch thing using notes. but when i turn that on i dont hear any sound, stepic isnt running unless I switch transport mode to sync to host? is this supposed to work with 'note on' as the transport mode or only in sync to host?
@devicemeister
@devicemeister 8 ай бұрын
When you map notes for pattern changes, you can't use them to start the Note-On transport. Otherwise, there could be unwanted conflicts between these two functions. Therefore, map notes for pattern changes that you don't need for MIDI Play (arpeggiator, chord play, etc.). For this purpose, notes in very low octaves are suitable.

When transposing sequences is the note output quantized to a set scale or just the note in?
@devicemeister
@devicemeister 7 ай бұрын
Both are possible. In the MIDI-Play options, you can set whether you want chromatic or scale transpose. For this, the so-called "scale-transform" mode is available to you. Please check from the timestamp: 4:30. If you use one of the two Scale-Transform modes, all output notes will also be quantized to the set scale.

I have been thinking about buying this one for while, but the lack of a. latch function, instead of the sequencer always running didn't do it for me. Been watching every single video to understand how it works and what it can do and I am generally impressed. I think it's nice that some sort of latch function has been implemented. But I do still think another latch function would be awesome. The latch function I am looking for is: - Hold a key down, the sequencer plays as long as you hold the key down. Sequencer STOPS when you release a key. The thing where you have to assign a key to stop the sequencer just seems a bit odd to me, ti would make a lot more sense to just hold a key down,, the sequencer plays form where ever it is in the sequence and when you release the note it stops playing. Is that something you guys would consider implementing? I just bought Kirnu Cream, which is also pretty cool, but that one ALWAYS starts from step one when you push a key and you can latch on/off by holding a key and releasing it. Adding the latch function I mentioned above would be make Stepic an instant buy for me. Anyway, looks great and getting bewtter and better with each update. Keep it up ;)
@devicemeister
@devicemeister 8 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for your detailed feedback! If I understand correctly, Stepic functions by default exactly as you desire. If you leave 'Latch' turned off, its transport runs only as long as you play notes. As soon as you stop sending notes to Stepic, its transport stops. Only when 'Latch' is activated, Stepic continues to play even without receiving notes. Then, you can stop its transport either by stopping the DAW transport or with 'Release Latch'.
@jaffasplaffa1
@jaffasplaffa1 8 ай бұрын
@@devicemeister Thanks for the answer. That was quick :) I would love the sequencer to just keep running in sync with the DAW all the time, but only when I hold a key down, it sends out midi data from the sequencer. When I release the note it stops sending out midi data. Instead of the "release latch", where you have to assign to a key on the keyboard to stop the sequencer from sending out midi, to me it makes more sense like this: 1. Sequencer is running in sync with DAW. 2. You hold down a key, the sequencer start stars sneding midi data out at which ever step the synced sequencer is at. So if it's at step 5, it will play from step 5, if it's at step 7, it will play from step 7. Etc. 3. Release the key, which stop sending midi data out of the sequencer. But everything always happens in sync with the daw, no restart of the sequencer when pushing a key. I dunno if I explained it correctly, but I can give you something to look at, to understand what I am saying: If you have Logic X Pro, the Scripter midi plugin offers this, but it's kind of hard to work with, as the layout is not that refined: 1. Open the Scripter midi plugin. 2. Load the preset called Sequencer. It comes with Logic. 3. Set Retrigger option to "Follow Global Position". 4. Maybe change the gate length for step 1, or else all the steps are the same and you won't hear a difference. That "Follow Global Position" makes sure that the first step of the sequencer is ALWAYS on step 1, step 5 is ALWAYS on steps 5, etc. It follows the global position of Logic. And at the same time the sequencer is only playing when you hold a key down. I hope it makes sense. Sometimes it's hard to explain these things in writing, rather than with a video. But check the Scripter plugin out, I hope it can showcase what I mean :)
@devicemeister
@devicemeister 8 ай бұрын
@@jaffasplaffa1 I think I understand. You're looking for a kind of gate mode that only outputs notes while Stepic is receiving notes. When Stepic receives no notes, the sequencer stays silent while its transport (internally) continues to run. I've added your suggestion to the wishlist and will give it some thought.
@jaffasplaffa1
@jaffasplaffa1 8 ай бұрын
@@devicemeister YES exactly :) Thanks for giving it some thought. It's really a good feature, hehe ;) I've been researching a lot of the midi plugins/sequencers and it seems like they all have something great, but then missing something else important. I have not found my go to midi sequencer plugin yet, but Stepic is very close. Kirnu Cream is great, but still missing some important stuff like the latch function I mention above, but also it does not offer velocity pr. step, which Stepic does. I've been programming my own midi plugin sequencer in Pure Data(PlugData, the version that can be loaded as a plugin in you DAW), but for some reason the CPU usage is extremely high for a simple midi plugin. I will keep an eye out for update for Stepic. Thanks for good communication ;)

Hello. Is there a way to get the Euclidean feel like the one in Ableton?
@devicemeister
@devicemeister 6 ай бұрын
Stepic doesn't have a Euclidean function. However, you can experimenting with different sequence lengths (eg 3, 6, 12) to get some interesting, polymetric rhythms. Additionally, you can bring dotted, triplets, or even custom note lengths into play to achieve an even note offset from the base beat. For more information on note length (Clockspeed), please check out part 2 of this tutorial titled "Top Bar."

Not sure im making 100% sense in my explanation! :)

I'm not quite sure what you mean. When you speak of "different synths," are you looking to save your Stepic sequence from one project (as a preset) to then load and edit it in another project or on a different track?
