After 15 years of being on the move, I’ve learnt to appreciate the lightness of a simple equipment. I’ve tried to love the x100 since the “T” (I had them all) but recently I made the move to the Ricoh GRiii and I’m all over it!

I was in Paris first week of April and enjoyed it very much. I used a Q2 and an M11 with a Voigtländer 21mm 3.5, Voigtländer 35mm APO, Voigtländer 90mm 2.0 and Summicron-M 50. Statistics say that I took a ratio of about half/half with the 21mm and the 50mm, and a few with the 90mm, but none with the Voigtländer 35mm APO - it is just not my focal length. The 21mm was a zone focussing dream, just point & shoot.

I feel lucky enough to have an a7iv and suite of GM lenses that it's hard for me to justify buying a smaller camera just for travel. I remember being in college and taking a D750 and enormous Nikkor 24-70 2.8 on hikes through the desert and Grand Canyon -- me in college would have killed for an a7iv and 24-70 GM. I love the idea of the a7cr as a pocket camera, but then I remind myself that what I've already got is so much better than what I had for many years!

I’ve had a lot of cameras from a lot of brands over the decades. My current favorite cameras for traveling, daily, and also carrying while on the motorcycle are my Leica TL2 and LUMIX GX85. The size and capabilities are very tough to beat, especially the GX85. Great video and content, thanks for sharing it with us!

As a father of four kids your comment about the M11 and not having hands ready to operate the camera is so true. I don't use my x pro3 with a Voigtländer that much right now. In the nice weather I could just set it to f/11 and focus at two or three meters, done. But I value autofocus so much right now

I have tried many kind of setups for my travel photography and encourage people to experiment and find what they like. For me I just want a fun, small camera that gives me great JPEGs, because I don't want to be editing more. That's my day job as a wedding photographer. So today what works best for me it's a Fuji X-S20 with a light zoom like the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and the super small Fuji 35mm f/1.4. The Fuji Film Simulation are key. I only shoot JPEGs. I love the SOOC results.Then I connect a USB-C card reader to my iPhone 15 Pro and can easily cull, share and backup all the images. It gives me a lot of joy. If Sony added something like Fuji's film simulations (like Real Time LUTs to bake a look to the JPEGs), I would totally go for the A7CR. The list of travel setups I have tried: -X100 -Nikon D750 + 35/85 1.8 -X-T1 + 23mm f2 -Ricoh GR -Fuji X-T30 + 15-45mm -Sony A7IV + Tamron 28-75mm 2.8

Great video! What I love the most is that you show the perspective of using these cameras with kids! Im in the market for either a X100VI or a A7CR but it's so hard to find videos talking about using/carrying these cameras If you have kids. I relate so hard where you mentioned that while using the M11 its great for if you're on your own, but the problem is, when you are walking around with kids and are in Dad mode, it can be a troublesome camera. I find this with my S5. Great camera, however, when you're walking around with a kid and are being a Dad and not a photographer, it suddenly becomes unwieldily and a chore to use even though it's already small. I was wondering if you could elaborate more on using the A7CR. Do you feel like this camera can become overwhelming when walking around with kids vs the X100VI? Naturally, id only ever use small lenses on the Sony. I know you mention that if you had to pick one, then you'd probably go with the A7CR, but for me, the fact that you went out of your way to specifically mention the X100VI to be the perfect Dad cam and its easy to use while carrying a kid, really really hits my soul haha. Im torn! hahah cheers!

I was exact in same situation. I have 3 little daughters. The main problem with kids is: they are often very near, so 35mm fixed lens is useless. What I have found is a combination of Sony A7cR + 10-20mm F4. It can record from 16mm to 48mm. The weight is only 170 gramms heavier, but the gripp is better. It will give you 4k 60fps without any visible vignetting, 4k 30fps in crop mode oversampled from 6k. It has replaced my iPhone 15 pro with it's 3 bad quality 4k log cameras and bad digital stabilization. I previously had a Sony ZV-E1 with 16-35mm full frame, but noise and stabilization in ZV-E1 is terrible, video quality is much lower than in A7cR from iso 640 to iso 12800. For some reason Sony cameras has better stabilization in Crop Mode. I will still keep ZV-E1 for very dark time, but for everything else it's not so good

@@superalex159 Ahhh I stupidly didn't even consider that. Thanks for reminding me because you're right, my kid LOVES to run AT me or she is very close to me, so that fixed lens could potentially become problematic. Ive also become very accustomed to shooting her with a 24mm. Interestingly, I haven't invested in any Sony gear so it would be quite the jump to switch systems. I just discovered that Panasonic are potentially going to announce a new compact full frame camera in two weeks which will essentially be my S5 but smaller. If this becomes true, this could be the path I go down as I'm already in the ecosystem. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

I almost always shoot my M11 in aperture priority and auto ISO, usually with highlight weighted metering. All good. For a spring/summer holiday in Paris I’d probably take my Q2. For a winter holiday with much less daylight, I’d probably take my M11 just because it has lower noise at higher ISO. Can’t go wrong with either really

Just got back after 2 weeks in Italy and my bag had the X100VI as well, plus the Nikon Zf with their 24-200. Unless I needed more range the Fuji was my go to. The Nikon colors are stellar but the Fuji is so easy to just walk around with and unlike my GRIIIX, weatherproof. I had a rainy day in Rome and just walked around with the Fuji hanging on the wrist strap shooting street pics and it was wonderful to shoot with. My biggest gripe with the Fuji is I would flip to the ND to get some slower motion blur pics and then forget I had it on. So then I’d have blur when I didn’t want it. More a me problem but I wish the ND icon stud out more sorta idiot light wise. 😂

I really love the Hassleblad images, can you set it shoot a medium or small size image for the casual snaps, and then jump into full size when you want the detail? It would be great if you could get this look and experience, but at like 30 megapixels or so. 100 seems pretty unnecessary for most genres. I'm surprised that I didn't like the Fujifilm images, but tbf their stylistic tonality makes them easy to overcook. It does makes the most sense as a dad camera if you just want an unobtrusive snapper, since it's more about the experience of not overthinking - and the OVF/film simulations help with that focus of taking more photos rather than trying to take better photos. I usually shoot my Fujifilm cameras in P mode like you did with the Leica, because I think they have a pretty solid metering algorithm which keeps you in the aperture sweet spot without getting too shallow or too deep. I'd like to see more of the a7CR. That is pretty interesting. It definetly has the most clinical look, but I think chucking a 24 on there and using the aps-c mode when I want 35, the same with a 55 to 85. I'd be very happy to carry something that versatile and reliable around when traveling. ✨ Leica - I have no notes. I'd take an M11 and a 28 Elmarit for 80% of my photography. If I was a war photographer or something I'd get the Monochrome and just live at f8, 1/320, Auto ISO and zone focus everything day or night, then push it in post. 😂

Thanks Benj. for the video. I own the Fuji x100v, recently sold my Leica Me 240, and have the Sony A7c and A7cii. I sold the Leica because it was too slow and clunky although In have my Leica lenses which work better on my Sony. The Fuji is fun however where it lacks significantly to the Sony is the accuracy of the autofocus. Also, Sony image quality surpassed my Leica. When I travel I have my Sony A7c and Sony A7cIi and travel with the very small and terribly underrated 28-60 f4 and 40mm f2.5 g lens. On the street, I can shoot often from the hip and the Sony autofocus is spot on. In a pinch, I use the crop mode on the 28-60 at the long end with great results. Kudos to you for risking the kit by taking almost all the most desired cameras with you to Paris, France. Easily, one of the highest reported areas with risk of theft for travel. Also, one handed operation is really underappreciated. I have dabbled in a couple M43 cameras for compact travel setups. But some of them have the on/off switch on the left side of the camera. Though I don't travel with children, when I'm travelling, it is not uncommon for me to have a bag or something in my left hand. Being able to operate a camera with one hand is really important. Sony is pretty much king for me in respect to right hand only use.

Leica Q3 should be on this list, it’s quite different than the a7CR, especially in terms of user experience. Also, I believe that the Leica 61mp sensor is actually manufactured by a non-Sony (Israeli?) company, which is also why you can’t color match Sony and Leica cameras perfectly.
@benjhaisch
@benjhaisch 26 күн бұрын
Interesting take on the sensor, I honestly have no insight other than Sony basically makes sensors for almost everyone so I wouldn’t be surprised. All companies have their own computers that interpret their data in different ways, so it’ll look different and react differently regardless. I’d love a Q3 as well but $$$$
@MarcAdesso
@MarcAdesso 26 күн бұрын
@@benjhaisch I was surprised the first time I heard this too, I originally just assumed everyone was using Sony too.. Google 'TowerJazz Panasonic' - I understand that this is the company Leica gets its sensors from too (unlike Nikon, which borrows tech and manufacturing Sony, even though the actual sensor made by Sony is different than what you find in Sony cameras- 40mp stacked vs 61mps). I'm not an engineer, but I would guess that 61mp is just the most any company can fit in terms of pixel size on a FF sensor with current technology, not necessarily an indicator that the sensor came from Sony. I'll also say that color is more hardware driven then one might think- another example is the difference in color filter array between the X2D and GFX systems. If it was just software/LUTs all using Sony sensors in the same configuration, hypothetically you would be able to match colors perfectly with color checkers/LUTs/software in post regardless of what LUTs the OEM uses. In other words, (I think) everything before demosaicing and color correction in the imaging pipeline is more hardware, so hard/impossible to match (ie, different sensors/CFAs), whereas demosaicing iand color correction are more algorithms/software (the companies' own computers/LUTs/color solutions), so should be able to be matched in post.

Yawn No weather-sealing for the GR is a fail and deal killer for many. Plus, no viewfinder. Heck, just use a smartphone with a volume button set as a shutter button and you have something very similar to a GR - plus weather resistant!

X100V is probably where it's at because in reality who wants to take a 10k camera travelling? Personally I take the Q3 but only because it uses the same battery and charger as my other camera the SL3 - but I fear losing the Q3 constantly

Hi there.. I agreed But what I actually did was, add the camera on the insurance ( 100% ). Here in Canada I pay around $250 Cad per year I brought my m11 to barcelona and rome last year. not worried at all .. but always paying attention

The thing with Fuji is that you don't have to edit the photos. The JPEGs out of the camera with the film recipe you like are amazing. Traveling is not just about the size of the camera; being able to get beautiful pictures right off the camera is a huge plus.

I agree about the Sony. They make really great cameras, notwithstanding the fact that they have the best selection of lenses available. Fujifilm is an ebay scalper's camera while Leica just screams you don't care about value or money.
@CianMcsweeney
@CianMcsweeney 26 күн бұрын
Fuji's cameras have been the targets of scalpers for a reason, people want them. As for Leica, I half agree, they don't make sense for 90% of photographers, but they are unique cameras and are the only brand that offer a true digital rangefinder, plus, if you buy an older model who's price has bottomed out, you can very easily try it for a year and then trade it in for a very small loss or even small profit, essentially getting a free year long rental

@@AIP404 Thanks for the reply. I'm told that some or most of the issues are related to the memory cards? I was at the new Leica shop in NY a few weeks ago and had a chance to try it out. It's a beautiful Camera.. I do plan on buying one but it won't be for a while. By the time i'm ready the next model might be out already.

Yes, you are "nuts" to carry around all that expensive gear in public. I hope you had insurance. Anyway, I would only take 2: my Nikon Zf and that Hasselblad 907x 100v. Then again, I would never take them around in a city like Paris.
