Wood chip wallpaper is probably the most difficult type of wallpaper to remove. Some wood chip wallpaper will have been on the walls for several decades and is notoriously difficult to remove. In this video I removed some wood chip using a Zinsser paper tiger and some Zinsser DIF liquid which is the best way of removing stubborn wallpaper.

Just stripped 16 walls of woodchilp, every wall plasterboard, the best process is this, cut sections top to bottom with Stanley blade in strips that are just narrower than the steamer, place steamer on the paper and heat for few seconds, move steamer away to pick the corner of section and slowly bring down steamer and pull strip off, this will remove the painted paper and leave pasted woodchilp, continue this until all painted stuff is off, soak remaining paper, leave for 15 mins then go around again taking off remaining woodchip with steamer, although it's been soaked previously soak small sections as you go as this boils the water on the paper within 10 seconds and the paper will scrape off much easier with a good, large scraper. I tried many methods and this is the best way

Moved into a 3 storey, 4 bed through terrace and every wall has woodchip! Been using a sponge and scraper so far but off to screwfix tomorrow morning to buy this stuff and hopefully will make my life a little easier. Woodchip really is the paper of the devil but hoping this makes it easier for myself and i can finally get to paper and paint to our design. Nice video. I know very well that wallpaper. My entire flat was covered with that wallpaper. When I refurbished my flat I used a paint roller with hot water to wet down the walls and that made it easier to get rid of the wallpaper. It can be a pain if you have several coats of paint like I had in my walls. And a big bucket also helps to get the room tidy while stripping the wallpaper off, stripping wallpaper makes a heck of a mess.

What a great video - thanks for sharing all that information! I stripped our entire shared hall from wood chip paper today (wall from 1880, paper from the 1960s) and this tutorial really worked perfectly! The paper came off after the second spray with the enzyme solution except for the edges and a couple of tough spots which we soaked longer with a sponge, but all in 1 day. A 5£ 2l sprayer from Lidl was plenty btw. with a few refills. The paper tiger is a crap piece of equipment btw, bad quality, the spike wheels fell out almost immediately and I had to go and get another, the same happened again. Use very little pressure and circle the thing, don't move back and forth. The idea of perforating the wallpaper is good, the device is flimsy but there's no real alternative. Going to skim walls new and paint, hopefully good for a few decades :)

For those having trouble with this method on woodchip paper, try using a heavy duty scraper or sander on the paper first to get the raised parts of the wallpaper relatively flat. Then the perforator can penetrate the paper more meaning the solution soaks through easier. Keep the wall wet and ideally scrape from top to bottom, this allows you to be able to spray the edges as you go down ensuring the solution gets behind the paper. Tough paper won't quite come down as nice as some manage, but it does reduce the scraping effort significantly.

Painter with 37yrs exp, most papers are easy peel today, but woodchip is a nightmare as it just breaks down & crumbles like wet tissue paper in small bits, i have always followed the 1,2,3 ,step in stripping which is first try to tear off a piece without soaking, most do today, but some older ones will need step 2 which i use mostly, a large scuttle that i use for emulsions i fill with hot bubbly water, fairy liquid or shower gel anything that bubbles up dont need much, & with a good roller that holds lots of paint, mines a purdy, 12 inch completely soak one section of wall if it's around 2 to 3 metres or more & repeat, once is sometimes enough but let it soak through before applying a second, or 3rd,another tip, only roll up, not down as otherwise most of the water will be on the floor, by rolling upwards the water being pushed out from the roller will sit above as you roll, the bubbles will stay on the wall to keep it soaked,waterproof dust sheet down for any drips & leave paper stripped to soak up any excess water that does drop on sheet, once you get the backing wet it just falls off, beware of steamers on plaster as im not a fan , they blow the plaster being too aggresive for my liking, never had to use anyway as soaking does the job but that is the 3rd option, if all else fails

I wish I'd found this before removing paper in two rooms and a hall. You're dead right about a steamer not being the best tool for the job. I can confirm large chunks of old plaster fell off the wall and needed patching - then priming with watered down paint. This also restricts the kind of paint you can use to cover it.

Yes, it will still work- but it is really difficult to get wood chip off. I would definitely used a spiked roller to perforate the paper first. You might be better off mixing the DIF or some washing up liquid with some warm water and wallpaper paste, that way it won't all drip off immediately. Then paste that on using a brush (don't make it too thick though, or it won't soak in) It's not going to be easy, I'm afraid!

Hi. I’ve recently bought a house in which nearly all the ceilings are papered with wood chip wallpaper. It’s going to have to come off ASAP !! Do you suggest any additional technique other than shown in this video to successfully remove it without too much grief or damage. Of course wetting the ceiling paper will require decent eye protection !

Woodchip on ceilings is a real pain to remove. If there is no coving I would consider over boarding the damn stuff as it's a pain in the backside to remove!
@davidnicholson9757
@davidnicholson9757 6 жыл бұрын
Ultimate Handyman. Thank you for the reply! The ceilings are sloped with the roof at the front and rear of the upstairs rooms of the house. I’m going to have an insulation board fitted to the sloped areas and then lime plastered (chip paper removed beforehand). Perhaps your suggestion of boarding over the rest of the ceiling would work well. Another suggestion I heard was to scrape the high peaks of wood chip off as best as possible and then use a smooth over paint to mellow it out (hopefully achieve an appearance of flat ceiling!). Although that could wet the paper too much and cause it to drop. What’s your thoughts on that approach?

What would you recommend to do with the ceilings? Shall I replace the ceilings? I bought an house in 1999 and all the ceilings were terrible, so I over boarded them all. Some ceilings were so bad that I had to install a false ceiling to cover up the old one. Here is one that I did in another house of mine- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jcWBoMtzmseod30.html Here are some pictures- www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/forum1/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=57315 Once over boarded I had one ceiling skimmed, but the rest were Artexed. If I were to do it again I would use tapered edge boards, then tape the edges with scrim and I'd fill all the screw holes and tapered edges with Gyproc Easifill. Then I'd sand it down before giving the ceiling a coat of Zinsser Gardz kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mriPapdk2sqcmHk.html As I don't fancy plastering a ceiling!

Once paper has been removed, on old plaster, would your recommend using lining paper before painting or filing the old plaster, sand it to a smooth finish and then paint. The walls I have seem overall in good condition but I'm concerned they will take a lot of coats to paint - will they absorb a lot of paint?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
+isctony It depends really and it's difficult to say without seeing it.I'm not a fan of using lining paper and painting it as it adds a lot of time to the job. In this flat I have filled all of the holes using Gyproc easi fill. I'm then going to sand it down using the Mirka Deros, then I'm not sure after that. I might prime the whole room using Zinsser 123+ as it dries very quickly, or I might water down some of the matt emulsion that is being used in that room with 20% water and then give the whole thing a mist coat using that. If your walls are bare plaster, then yes they will absorb a lot of paint. A mist coat of matt non vinyl emulsion diluted 20% with clean water should make a suitable mist coat (this should soak in and mean you use less paint). Or if you have the time you can get a good finish by lining the walls first.

Hi there. certainly one way of stripping wood chip butI really can' t see the point in adopting this system at all. The fact that the paper ideally needs prepping the previous day (3 coats at intervals) is certainly not efficient or practical. I've also read the hyperbole about the stripper and the literature actually tells you to not bother spraying it on. The paper tiger has its uses but is completely unnecessary. All you need is a decent steamer and to be careful and do the job straight away. Wood chip is not problematic for a decent steamer. As you say, there will inevitably be some damage whatever method is employed. Also, that scraper is less than ideal for this purpose and will cause more damage than necessary. Just my opinion. Yours respectfully 21c
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
+21centurycaveman I don't think you understand. If you own a house and you want to strip off the wood chip, what does it matter if you have to spray it the day before? The wood chip has probably been on the wall for a few decades so what difference does a day make! You can do the spraying and scraping the same day, but it makes the job much harder. I have had wood chip paper that a steamer will not touch, which is why I no longer use a steamer. I'm not sure which literature you have read, but it's certainly not the instructions on the Zinssser DIF, which tell you to use a garden sprayer to spray on the solution (but not a mist).
@MrSwanley

The assertion that a steamer strips woodchip easily doesn't match my experience. My worst ever stripping experience was woodchip with had been overpainted with an oil based paint, so it was pretty much impervious to water whether in liquid or steam form. It had to be heavily scored in order for water to penetrate at all, and then it came off in tiny little postage stamp pieces. Never again! The next time I had something similar I took the plasterboard/drywall off the studs instead.

lol Where did you record the narration? In your wardrobe?! What you need is an sE Electronics Project Studio Reflexion Filter Vocal Booth! Or just a lot of cushions! Ha Ha! I've taken this stuff off many times & I believe that the smaller scrappers are better due to their more pressure per area aspect. Plenty of water.. or even better Lucozade! lol! Great vid tho man! Yeah man!

+KINDLE Thanks, I have just ordered one from ebay. Normally I talk on the video when filming, but because there are no carpets in this flat the acoustics are terrible- my office is a little better but getting the sound right is a nightmare. Thanks for the recommendation ;-)

In the process of removing wood chip from virtually every wall and ceiling in the house we moved into. Wood chip has two layers. By far the best approach I've found is to remove the first layer dry, then spray twice with hot water and detergent on a square meter. Make sure your scraper is stiff and sharp and away you go. The sharpness is required to take off residue paste which is left behind after removing the second layer of paper. You have to be a little more careful when scraping and spraying plasterboard but the process is working here. About 1m2 per 30-45.

stripped down quite a few woodchip walls and from what i've seen no matter what you do it's always gonna be a bastard job ... save yourself some money and time on the expensive solutions and just score it with a blade and steam it down ... using overpriced zinseer stuff won't help at all :D

My wife got loose with a steam stripper and we ended up with a load of "blown" plaster that had to be replaced. They might have their place but not in stripping paper, not in my house anyway.

+jonnno100 I have one, but never use it. I just don't like the heat that they produce and like you say it's easy to blow the plaster with one.Thanks for the comment ;-)

2.28! You call that easy? I will stick with the steamer, its far quicker and wont damage plaster if contact time is limited to 10 seconds or so and the user keeps moving the steam plate around as they go. Your method is painfully slow!

I've tried both methods and I'll never go back to using a steamer ;-) Thanks for the comment 👍
