2020 has been a CRAZY year for the reloading industry, and that has caused some shortages and delays for components and equipment. And that was the case with the new Dillon RL 1100 reloading press. It's taken a while longer to get ahold of compared to what I planned, but it has been worth the wait! In this video I'll walk through unboxing, overview, setup, and loading 9mm with this awesome new press!

I got my 1100 about the same time this video was made. I have added some Unique bin stops, a primer drop tube adapter down to a milk jug to catch used primers for recycling, and a case feed stopper to the case feed area. I also have the Powder Warning right after the powder measure, the bullet tray instead of the bin, and I added the hex key rack onto the old bullet bin bracket with a little bit of rework on the bracket. Big, big upgrade from my RL 550 I bought back in 1986. It was great and even had been rebuilt completely by Dillon and is still in service with a fellow gun club member. My 550 had by a SWAG, 750,000 or more through it. I've put about 20,000 or more through the 1100 without any problems. Great reloader! MSgt David R. Smyth, USAF, Ret.

There are a few things this press has going for it that help offset the cost compared to the '750. The roller handle, case feeder, and bullet tray are not added cost options, and the additional height provided by the Strong Mount is not required. However, the '750 has some stations which do double duty. The casefeed and decapping/resizing are combined and the priming is combined with the powder drop (and case mouth flaring on pistol calibers). This is possible because of the back-stroking dual-action handle that makes all the magic happen! I do think this press could definitely use another station (or two), so points to Mark 7.

I think that was bad ass, I want to start loading my own ammo, and I think if I can financial wise I'm going straight for this press and not single. I'd like to take a class, ill look for something locally. That was awesome. I'm machine operator I love doing things like this. Always something new to learn. Thanks!

Me too, been having for a while now. With bullet feeder and Redding competition dies, FW Arms decapper, and also an On Point MFG upgraded tool head which allows me to have 1 more station than the stock Dillon tool head. Also, it’s on a Mark7 auto drive 😉 nice press but the Mark7 Evo has it beat and I have them both...

that with the current "Ammo Shortage" it's beginning to look like a viable option. Anyone else noticing that since several law enforcement agencies are switching to 300 BlackOut in semi and full auto versions for CBQ, that it's now harder to find that caliber than 9MM! It's also amazing that ammo supplies are dictating what firearms individuals are purchasing; i.e. 40 CAL and 10mm.

Just a fun fact in case you didn't know, that custom foam packing comes as a little bag, you pop the inner capsule and as the chemicals mix they fill the bag with foam that hardens over time. Just pop the capsule and lay it on whatever you're packing and I makes it for you.

I can attest to the quality of the Dillon Manual. I didn't know a thing about progressive reloaders, and was given a RL-1100 recently (new in a box) and told "Figure it out"... A couple hours later I had a nice stack of .45ACP ready to take to the range next week for test fire and Chrono. In the last two months, I've been using the RL-1100 (for .45ACP) and a new Mark7 Revolution (set up for 9mm). The Dillon is easy to set up and understand. Its manual helped me learn basic progression and technique on Progressive loading. Without learning from the Dillon RL-1100, there is NO WAY I could have ever figured out how to set up and run my Mark7. That things manual is horrible and the Revolution is MUCH more complex (especially with all the sensors). The RL-1100 is a nice unit, and affordable enough that you can afford one for personal use. Which can't be said of the Mark7, which you can by 4 or 5 RL-1100's for, and is not really what I would call "user friendly"...

That is an awesome loader! VERY EXPENSIVE though. Yes add a bullet feeder and do a shootout of how many rounds can be loaded without a failure in an hour between the top 4 progressives, and please include the Lee new press as well as cost per round vs cost of brand/set-up. Thanks for this great work you do especially for the novice like me.

As always, great video! How would you compare this Dillon 1100 loading experience with the Mark 7 featured in the video you did back in april? I mean both of them manually operated and I'd like a comparison in regards to "the human experience" like the smoothness when using both presses, how prone to trouble (jams, inconsistencies in setup, quality of loaded rounds, etc) they may be and things like that rather than "cold" numbers of technical data points (like number of stations and such). Thanks! ***EDIT***: whoops!! I just saw your video about releasing the progressive presses shootout on september or october. I guess you'll mention these presses there!
@jimmybare3026

It's extremely smooth but Dillon dropped the ball not painting it blue. For this reason I guess I won't be kicking my Hornady AP out of the bed. Actually I am impressed by the steadiness of the the shell casings traveling around ...smooth. Also the speed you were turning those bullets around and placing them shows it'll definitely keep up with the user. That was a speedy 100 rounds and for sure want to see the bullet drop installed👍🇺🇲

A minor issue that I see with many progessives is that there are not enough stations after powder drop. (which is not movable on this press) What I'm saying is if you want to have a station each for powder check, bullet feed, bullet seat and crimp. I know that you can seat and crimp in one die but then you don't have total control.

Was planning to upgrade my pistol reloading from 5 stations to 7 stations, hoping I could to a powder check + bullet feeder + seat + crimp setup. With the way priming and powdering is setup on this press, I have no benefits „post powder charging“ compared to 5-station presses.

I have the Dillion XL650. I have maybe 20,000 rounds through it. Like, I load 9mm with 147 gr. RN bullets. I prefer X-Treme over Berry's because they are cheaper and find there is no decearnable difference between either brand of bullets. My load is 4 1 gr of CFE Pistol and my COL is 1.14 inches. My setup is different than yours in that I deprime and resize my cases before I run them through the reloader. I do this because I clean my cases using stainless steel pins, Dawn & Lemi-Shine. Then I dry my cases in my oven set on warm for 30 minutes to dry them. I have a rectangular shaped pan with a wire insert. I place a couple of sheets of paper towels on the pan to catch the stainless steel pins. I don't like the priming system on the XL650 because I can't see the primers. Every once in awhile a primer would flip and then I have to deal with a cartridge with an inverted primer. So I hand prime my cases using a Frankford Arsenal hand primer. It works great and unlike the Lee hand priming tool I used before, it has never had any problems with parts breaking. Wet tumbling the cases cleans the primer pockets and insides of the cases. After the cleaned cases are dry, I run them through a vibrating tumbler with crushed corn cob treated media with a little car polish added. This removes any tarnish and shines the cases making them look brand new. The car polish coats the cases and protects them from tarnishing. On the Dillion my first station has a case mouth expander die (Hornady). I have a RCBS ChargeMaster scale/ powder dispenser which I use to verify my loads. I put some upgrades on my Dillion press. I changed out the ball handled ram for a roller handled ram. I'm glad to see the XL1100 comes standard. I replaced the bearings with roller bearings and added a light so I get a clear view of the cases after they are charged. I also added a dial to the powder measure bar to make minor changes to the powder charge. I'm interested in doing a .308 case change. I'd like to see how the electric case trimmer works. So, if you would run a video showing that I would be very appreciative. Thanks for your video.

When you do the progressive press shoot out will you be doing equal station presses and will you be doing minimal set ups of each press or full set ups?

Great video! Very informative! Thank you for sharing. What’s the difference between the RL 1100 and the Super 1050?

Great video Gavin, always like your videos. I have a quick question regarding my case feeder on my 1050. My cases seem to be jamming into the case deflector and getting wedged in behind it or against it resulting in the cases getting all stopped up! Do you know of anybody or do you know of a way I can prevent this? Thanks

This is all great...if you are a mechanical engineer, whose hobby happens to be competitive benchrest shooting. I'm just a simple bass player, who also happens to be a certified gun nut. The closest thing I have to the machinery you've got in the background there, is a handheld drill. Like the average Joe DeerTag, I shoot something well under a hundred rounds annually in my assorted rifles and handguns. The RCBS Rock Chucker II single stage press kit I bought over thirty years ago, still fills the bill for my hunting and shooting needs. I seldom need to assemble more than fifty rounds a session. As Sly once said, "Different (handloading) strokes for different folks..." 🤣
