Are you curious about how to train to run an ultra marathon? Welcome to my running training VLOG - episode 3. In this training VLOG episode, I discuss my recovery after racing Zion 100 miles Ultra marathon, my taper week and briefly discuss my last race - Mount Fuji 100 miles.
Curious about the gear I use and recommend: check out this link
linktr.ee/runningwithsimon
Those two weeks didn't include much training - I guess racing 2x 100 miles ultra marathon was plenty of running. Instead, we focus on recovery and preparation for races. Mount Fuji 100 itself was a great race - Courtney Dauwalter was there! A very cultural and unique experience. Also, a very last minute adventure for me.
Only 1 week left before Cocodona 250 - things are getting real! Kind of intense that I'll be racing this only 1 week after Mt Fuji 100, which was a particularly challenging course. Oh well, I guess I'll never learn.
As always - Thanks for watching and remember -
Work Hard!
Believe in yourself!
Push your limits!
Simon

It's been a busy few weeks of racing! And the big one in less than 1 week! Can't wait for Cocodona. Good news is recovery is again very fast post-Fuji 100.

Thanks :) Can't wait to put it together - I'm trying to have it before cocodona starts next monday. It's a bit tight especially with the race preparation and travel for the race. But otherwise that creates a huge delay...

It's a great service you're giving to us weird people who try running great distances. I sincerely appreciate you sharing this stuff, man. Super impressive. It's wild that you just did Fuji! Throw in some bad advice occasionally for the BUA

haha I wish it was blitz! But sadly no - still very nice dog :) I don't think y'all need my help with bad advice - BUA is doing a great job at it!

You make it all seem so easy, fantastic video. Loved the clip with 'downstairs progression' post race. Best of luck with all the races, will be watching!

Thanks :) I realize now I should have time-stamped them, but it was 24hours, 48hours and 72 hours. Progression was faster than usual...the 72 hours would normally be at 96hr

I live pretty close to Mt Fuji and was thinking of doing one of the shorter races there next year. It's good to see you visit, and I hope you enjoyed your stay here. I look forward to seeing the full video. Thanks!

Congratulations on Fuji! Thank you so much for starting this series of VLOGs - it's wonderful! This is very well put together, and will only continue to get better. Your point about the Fuji race being a little more "accessible" than it may seem was a point well taken - yes, the flight is not cheap, but you leave me thinking that I (we) should not just assume we can never do something like this. Keep the content coming, and stay safe and injury free! Also wanted to add, the Darn Tough socks from your Amazon link are fantastic, and the OR hat also from your Amazon link is absolutely amazing. The second I put it on, along with the attached neck curtain, it felt like Heaven - super soft and comfy, and so breathable. In my head, it's the Simon Hat, just like Sally has her yellow hat.

Thanks :) It's kind of crazy for me to think that despite living in California, racing Badwater was probably 5x the price, and 100x more complicated than it was for me to race fuji which is on the other side of the world! Something I didn't mention because I only now am able to find the words to express it is - one doesn't run so many 100s in a lifetime. And it's always a unique experience. It's normal to want to keep it simple and affordable. I don't like wasting my hard earned money. But also, it feels like picking the race that you are "WOW" is important too. There's so much that goes into preparing for such race, and finding the race that you are particularly excited about makes it all more worthwhile and is also bonus motivation. Plus, when factoring everything that goes into preparing for a race, the race itself is never the main cost.

@@runningwithsimon I’m glad you emphasized this point. I really hope to do a 100 miler in the next few years, and want it to be a special experience all around, not just because it has a famous name.

Fuji was a pretty cool adventure because it was a mix of a culture trip and race! I thought it'd be super complicated, and sure it's more complicated than driving to a local race. But otherwise, it's very manageable...especially if planning more than 1 week before.

My "training" routine is a joke compared to a pro like you, of course, but I'm happy that I'm backing to it after 2 years of recovery from an injury. Thanks to our Father, I'm stronger now 💪🏽

Congrats on Canyon! How was the race? It's (relatively) close to where I live - might do it one day. I had heard many negative comments about last year edition so was hesitant for this year, but hopefully they were listening and able to improve.

it amazes me how much running crushes my legs. being a cyclist im used to going out for hours day after day but with running i realized you just cant do that, or at least i cant. i would like to run the Rock Wall in kootenay park this year witch is 60ks ish but im not sure if thats realistic. recovery from runs is a lot longer than cycling, wich bugs me. dont want to get injured but realize that i need volume to handle longer runs. cycling in between runs is what im doing, not sure if just running would be best.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 2 ай бұрын
I think it's also just different. Too much cycling was hard on my hip flexor myself, but I presume if I had kept going my body would eventually adapt. Same with running - it used to be hard on everything. But cross training helps, especially with the big muscle. Cycling is very targeted however in comparison, especially compared to trail where you need a lot of stabilization, and also shock absorption.

Awesome! Mt Fuji has been on my list for a while. I am confused with the ITRA point requirements because a few of my races listed in ITRA don't show any points and that's very strange. Very few races listed in the US that are with ITRA. Am I missing something?
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I don't know how it works as to what has and doesn't have ITRA points. I think there's more race that give ITRA points than what is actually on the ITRA page, but could be wrong. I think it used to be more popular too when that's what was used for UTMB instead of the stones. Race director may need to pay ITRA so that might be the issue. I have enough points so didn't really even think about it, but looking at the website it's weird. For example I did Javelina every year since 2020, and have points for it apparently. Except in 2023. Also, I'm almost sure I had more race listed before (I hadn't look in a while) but they seem to be gone (Leadville?). But yeah, it's weird - I hadn't look at this in a while. At least it seems Black Canyon, Rocky Raccoon and Sedona all offer points. But if Javelina used to give points but not anymore...Aravaipa may be pulling out, which obviously removes a lot of option. It almost sound 'political'
@iterato1
@iterato1 2 ай бұрын
Huh, weird. I guess I will have to figure that stuff out when I really get serious about getting into UTMF! If that stuff is really politics, then it's really sad.
