There was one part that Matt didn't get into regarding Beyond Games. After it shut down in 2002, the company's founder chose to form a new one in its wake: Smart Bomb Interactive, best known for licensed titles like Snoopy vs the Red Baron, Pac-Man World Rally and my favorite piece of trivia, the Wii version of the Bee Movie Game. A far cry from the post-apocalyptic roots of the former studio huh? Unfortunately it really wouldn't last that long, as they rebranded themselves into a purely edutainment company called Wildworks in 2010, working on an educational kids MMO called Animal Jam. And then got into NFTs in 2021, before getting bought out by this Indian conglomerate the following year.

ever since you mentioned this game in passing during the expect no mercy episode I have kinda developed a liking to it. I haven't played, oh no don't get me wrong I'm not into pain, it's just that it's so... 90s, so muddy like the artists threw the concept art on the mud and said "yeah that's the best thing ever, brown and gray", unapolagetic cheesy like how someone who never played videogames and was alive during the satanic panic would imagine Mortal Kombat. for me, watching a playthrough of this is like watching ants go bout their way. you go, weird jaquar game.

@anenigma8378
@anenigma8378 6 ай бұрын
For the uninitiated, the Hyperscan is a "game console" made by Mattel in 2006. Out of it's library of 5 games, it had 2 fighters: An X-Men one and some weird wrestling one. However the whole gimmick of the Hyperscan was that you had to buy physical card packs in order to actually play the game, which was basically what loot boxes are in modern games. With the fighting games, the only way to play the game is to have a card of the character you want to play as. X-Men is particularly egregious with this as it has "Ultimate" characters which are just strictly better versions of existing characters making it blatantly pay to win. There's not many reviews of the Hyperscan due to the fact that you need the cards just to play the games and with it being a failure, the cards are hard to come by. The console itself is also poorly made and prone to failure so finding a working one is even more rare. So until this gets emulated somehow, I don't know if it will appear on this show. The most in depth review of the Hyperscan is from a youtuber named Kohdok if you want to check it out. TL;DR: It's a really bad game console with a really bad fighting game that's almost impossible to fully review at this current time.

I recall Catfight being reviewed in an off-the-shelf Computer Gaming World (or maybe PC Gamer) so that should be quite reviewable without problem. The review didn't mention anything adult in it, just that it had two difficulties: one where the computer didn't move at all and one where they did. So that one should be no problem to review. Also, Battle Wheels is amazing on the Lynx and I highly recommend it.

I've had the opportunity to watch a longplay of this game from NintendoComplete KZfaq channel, where they used Volcana to beat the game. Yeah, it's bad but the behind-the-scenes of this game is very interesting, since mostly of the actors were friends of the developers back then, and Volcana is played by a former volleyball player, I think. It's definitely a low budget project, and it shows. And I kinda like from the music even though it's really grainy and low quality, like it was recorded from a MP3 player from 2008. I just wish that MK1 had fighters from those MK clones and put some of them on either a DLC or make it available in the game through its Invasion mode. I'd like to see Volcana vs Scorpion someday.

Man, you weren't kidding about that lore, Matt! That manual has, like 90s Blizzard-level lore in it. Truly insane for what's basically a MK1 clone released 3 years after MK1. I kind of want to give Beyond Games credit for not overreaching here; unlike, say, Naughty Dog with Way of the Warrior or the devs of Expect No Mercy, they at least seemed to understand that they knew nothing about making fighting games when they were dragooned by Atari into making this thing, so it looks like they just tried to crib MK to the best of their ability. They failed, and they wound up creating something less interesting than WotW, but they at least understood their limitations and didn't try to overreach. That's commendable in a way.

The 90s were a huge time for fighting games. It's not like now where yeah, there's a few long lasting franchises that are still great. Back then it was a newer genre and what was selling well. All the executives wanted their Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter and didn't care how it got there. Whatever genre is dominant now, whether it's FPS or open-world, probably has a ton of shitty imitators also. It's the same with movies

A metal themed fighting game with Mortal Kombat-like elements doesn’t sound too bad on a piece of paper, if it only wasn’t executed horribly. It should also be noted that when this was first shown at the E3 in early 95, it was originally called “Ultra Vortex”, but they had to change it to “Ultra Vortek”, probably because there’s another game on the SNES called Vortex, and this has nothing to do with that game.

Only thing I remember of it though was some battle where I ended up having to fight a Mad Max vehicle while being stuck on foot and having almost ammo in some arena, but I was a dumb kid at the time so odds are 50-50 if that was the 90s being the 90s or me being trash at games I was definitely not old enough to play at the time. Good episode as always by the way, keep it up.

Redline should have gotten a lot more attention than it did. One of my favorites from that era. While maybe not the very best in either the FPS or vehicular combat categories, it did both very competently, and merged them very well, which very few games even attempted at the time. Also, very good graphics, sound, memorable characters, and just a lot of interesting and new ideas, polished up pretty well despite how ambitious it was

Matt, man, I hope you got yourself some powerful lozenges and/or cough syrup, because I don't want to imagine the state your throat was in after recording the bit with the soundtrack titles. Suffer for the sake of your art if you must, but be sure to take care of those velvet pipes of yours!

One thing I'll give this game, the idea that the Volcana fighter leaves a scorch mark when she falls down is kinda neat.

You have tattoo assassins in the intro but haven't done a video for it yet. And I'd love to see where on the list Evil Zone would be.

I desperately need some modern indie games to recreate the look of games like this. It's so trashy, but in a cool and fun sort of way that really tickles my brain. Also the music sounds like something a kid in 1995 made for his Doom mod.

Jesus Christ, this game was priced at 69.99 in 1995, based on that sales flyer. The audacity!

3rd time suggesting battle of guardians, it's an atrocious nft fighting game that's on par with a lot of stuff here gameplay-wise and goes beyond by having pay to win nft microtransacions that cost in the hundreds or even thousands of dollars, it's a total disgrace to video games as a whole

I vaguely remember playing the Redline demo back in the day, and thought it was pretty impressive from an ambition standpoint, but kind of remember the controls being a little Jank? I have no idea how the game would hold up today, but would love to see a video on it.

I had a lot of fun playing Redline at lan parties back in the day, one of the most enjoyable multiplayer experiences i've had. Not sure how it would hold up these days, and i do not know if the single player campaign is any good as i never actually tried it.
