Solo Overnight Hike and Camp on in the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges. I hiked up to Mount Fyffe Hut and Mount Fyffe. Making good time with a few showers and strong gusts of wind I traversed along the tops to Gable and Gables end. I made my way down alot of fun scree slopes down towards Kowhai saddle where I camped for the night.
Strong wind gusts tested my Ultralight Tarptent Protrail and I had very little sleep but it was a super fun night.
The next day I bashed down the river into the Kowhai Valley.

Good to see you finally made it to the Kaikoura Coast. First overnight tramp I (Kev) ever did was up Mt Fyffe, but back then there was a track up Fenceline Spur (and no Wilding Pines!!). Kowhai Saddle is a magical place to camp, especially when there is a bit of snow on the surrounding mountains. Great video yet again.

Hehe but the saddle was so cool 😁😬. I talked to a few people the next day and they said it was pretty windy in the valley aswell, probably not as bad as what I had though. I appreciate you Ally! Thanks.

Getting my adventure hike fix from you. Wind funnelled through a valley further accelerates over the brow of a saddle, you were fortunate it wasn’t really windy, I don’t think my ultralight would handle even that. Looking strong man 👍

Cheers Dave. It was a fun trip. The original weather had called for the wind to die down but when is the weather ever correct haha. Thanks for watching

Windy again! I hate getting buffeted by strong wind all night when up high, robs one of much-needed sleep for sure. First visit to this area, BK? Regardless, great trek, much obliged for posting. As always, great content, production, quality and especially presentation! Cheers.

Like your views very pretty that is why i live out of town ... I have my pro trail coming in 4 days ...I will have to wait till weather gets better to use snow every day for 2 weeks sucks ....I bought because less stakes and easy setup and less poles ...Can not wait till the end of march ...

Hard to avoid the flapping with the Tarptent- I have a Contrail which is the earlier incarnation of the Protrail, and have endured a few sleepless nights when the wind was swirling around! Has always survived though, and only weighs 700 grams vs a Hilleberg that wouldnt flap so much but weighs and costs 3 times as much..
@BackcountryKiwi
@BackcountryKiwi Жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure. It held up very well all things considering. If I had remembered my earplugs I might have slept a bit better. Hilleberg makes a great tent but like you said, more expensive and heavier, but design for a different purpose/approach. Cheers

Enjoyed your video. I’m torn between the ProTrail, the Durston XMid, or even the cheaper Lanshan 1P.
@BackcountryKiwi
@BackcountryKiwi Жыл бұрын
Tough choice. The lanshan is great if you want to save money. The duration is very popular and is a great tent. I'd consider what matters most between, weight and cost and whether you think you'll prefer front or side entry. Cheers

Is your tent the silnylon version or silpoly? I am debating on this tent at 6'2 using a long wide neoair xlite and 20deg quilt. How is the condensation management?
@BackcountryKiwi
@BackcountryKiwi Жыл бұрын
This one is the silnylon version. Now they make it in silpoly which would reduce sagging. It's a great tent, although if you are that tall I'm not sure how comfortable it would be to sit up in. Condensation management is like any other single wall tent. Keeping the doors open and setting up with a breeze running through and/or under shelter makes a huge difference. Cheers.

Love your stuff and your attitude mate. You're like me, just love being out amongst it regardless of the conditions. Glad to know I'm not the only one who happy dances out there lol. Just wondering, do you use any tracking or mapping apps etc? Or do you just follow the markers? Thanks for yet another entertaining vid. 👍 🤙

Cheers Damon! Much appreciated. If I waited for good weather all the time I'd hardly get out haha. It makes for a different experience! I just use topo maps on my phone and any route/trail notes I find online. Cheers!
