A late start to this solo overnight trip made things interesting.
I headed up into the mountains onto an awesome ridgeline where I was joined by numerous cheeky Kea. With the daylight fading and the weather packing in, I decided to drop off the ridgeine that I was traversing, down into what I thought was the correct riverbed.
Making my way downstream in the dark, the stream starting to narrow into a bit of a gorge. I had to set up my tarp shelter amongst some trees, bluffed out on steep terrain. It snow in the night and I woke up to a beautiful, cold morning.
I scrambled back up onto the ridge where I hiked out the way I had come in.
It was a super fun trip and I learnt alot.

It's incredible how much you've unmotivated at editing over your time posting videos! The music choice for that morning hike up the mountain ridge was perfect. Every moment of it was riveting, kept me interested the whole time. I also love how you always find a way to put a positive spin on an otherwise bad situation, it's very admirable. Overall always amazing content, keep up the great work mate!! I always enjoy your videos

Bravo mate !! That was a great hike indeed. I also think how wonderful your positive attitude is to your situations - absolutely brilliant. The scenery is just so beautiful. I am surprised at how that thin tarp provided you with a decent amount of coverage but it did the trick (personally I like tents but in that situation it may not have worked as well). Please keep safe while out hiking and I look forward to the next one. Cheers from Adelaide Sth Aust. 😊

Thanks heaps Carrie. Yeah I was super happy with my tarp on this trip, it's ultralight but can handle quite a bit. Very versatile where I can I pitch it aswell. Cheers!

Enjoyed the survival aspect to this Zeb, I love epic. I’d recommend you get a compact bivvy bag (protect bag & trap heat) and sort a ridgeline for your tarp. As some viewers might try and follow what us more experienced adventurers do, what would be your advise or what would you do differently if that route was repeated? Perhaps add that in comments as a disclaimer. Stay interesting, stay adventurous, stay alive 👏👏👏

Cheers Dave. A emergency bag would definitely be a good idea. Next time I'd just leave earlier, would have solved alot of my problems but that's my fault. I knew it was going to get dark.

Beautiful stuff here bud! I’m probably only inspiring more dangerous trips by saying this but be careful out there man! I did this exact same thing when i was your age except it was in the Southern California desert and our packs were 60 lbs(27 kg something like that). We were hiking together though. I never went out there alone. Just be careful out there dude!! Looking forward to some great winter trips from the southern hemisphere my friend! Keep up the good work and thanks again!! NQU

Thanks heaps Jason. I sewed the tarp myself. It's ultralight, only weighs 170 grams (excluding guy lines and pegs). I got the material from Ripstop By The Roll. I love it. Cheers.

Got any tips on good plants to use for tinder/kindling/firewood in the NZ bush? I moved to Welly from Europe and I've struggled to light fires without resorting to cotton/vaseline, all my knowledge of the woods at home is useless here and I cant find many good sources on NZ specific bushcraft
@BackcountryKiwi
@BackcountryKiwi Жыл бұрын
It's definitely tougher here in nz. Splitting wood and making feathersticks/shavings is usually the most reliable approach. If you can find it dry, dead Cabbage tree leaves or toi toi seed heads work great for a tinder. Cheers

I notice you often end up holding both poles in one hand, do you recommend getting them or are they a hassle? Also your shoes look interesting, quite a wide toe box, what are they? Be cool to see a gear vid from you where you talk through bits of your kit and why you chose them! Cheers
@BackcountryKiwi
@BackcountryKiwi Жыл бұрын
Yeah I am normally holding my poles in my walking shots, less hassle with the camera. But I do highly recommend walking poles. They are well worth it. The shoes are Altra Lone Peak 6. Great shoes, yeah very wide toe box. I might have to some day! Cheers.

How do you find your trails? I'm new to backpacking, live in the Kaimai area and want some good 1-2 night trails for myself + kids 10 and under when the weather warms up a bit. We did the Pinnacles hut a couple weeks ago for my 1st backpacking trip.
