Some customers are so pushy to get their phone back, they don't consider that the longer you work on their phone, the higher quality the repair, and better value for money. Instead they'd rather rush you which means more chance of you failing. I had a customer who was calling every 15mins, and after the 3rd time I just reassembled the phone and returned it to her saying I was unable to fix it.

The reason you don't want the board touching the bottom is because it will dampen the effect. It the same effect as if you put your finger on a speaker cone.

The reason you use the tray is because with out it the object your cleaning is laying against the "hull" or whatever u want to call it the tub or hull that holds the liquid has the transducers mounted directly too it they excite the liquid to the point of cavitation. So if there is something directly touching it that close to the emitter of the transducer it causes alot of reverberation and stresses the transducer much more effectively shorting the life of it by about half or more. bottom line u need a certain amount of space from tub. =) loved the video man I'm going to check out what else u got.

I know it's an old video, but if your friends with someone at a hospital or dialysis center, you can get "distilled" in this case meaning ultraclean water for "free". Because they have huge amounts of it and also need to keep the systems running even if they dont use up all that is produced, because even ultraclean water gets contaminated quickly again over time. The "distilled" water you can buy at supermarkets etc is mostly demineralized water, which then stands for a year on the shelf. still really "clean" because nothing to feed/live on inside, but not distilled. ... Don't have a cheap source for the alc tho' ;-)

I'm curious: was there a specific reasoning for the choice of heat level? Why should it not be at lower temps? Also how much of a difference does the Branson fluid make for just simple dirt? I'll be needing to disassemble my 2011 MBP to try to fix/clean my keyboard, and if I can use my Sonix IV 60kHz ultrasonic with just distilled to get most of the regular sediment out of the motherboard or keyboard, that'd be nice. I haven't had any liquid spills on the machine (just a couple of unresponsive keys after 4+ years of daily use), so I'm wary of use any kind of detergent if not necessary. Thoughts?

great video...thanks for the info! quick question - we're mostly specializing in iPhones rather than computers...and we saw how you tilted the board 4x for 1 minute each to make sure all the little hard to reach parts got cleaned...so that we can properly tilt the boards and have them resting on the basket like yours, would we be OK to get the Crest CP200T? It's about 1/2 the size, however it's also 55W instead of 120W. Does that matter? And would this work? Thanks!

as a side note to keep anyone from blowing something up, don't use anything flammable or with a flashpoint. the digital version of this cleaner is nice too. it's about $50 more. very easy to get exact settings and it also adds a degas mode. and if you want to fill it, branson recommends a 3% solution. I fill it with 1.5 gallons of distilled water and put 170 ml of EC in.

Hi Louis, I have been repairing high end photo stuff for some years at component level too. I have never considered an ultrasonic cleaner and you sounded like it would be a great remedy for cleaning corrosion on PCBs. I come across PCB damage due to acid leak and salt water penetration. And you know it gets nasty when the corrosion disconnects PCB rivets and inner layers. What is your opinion about cheapo cleaners less than $100 online? Would one of them make my job easier? Thanks!

Ultrasonic cleaners use ultrasonic frequencies at very loud levels that you can't hear and produce undertone frequencies. If you are sitting right next to it, please check it with a decibel meter to make sure it isn't so loud it is going to damage your hearing without hearing protection. Although some of the main frequencies used by ultrasonic cleaners may not be damaging, some sympathetic frequencies can be.

Thanks Louis! You've convinced me to buy one of these! One question -- do you bother with an ultrasonic cleaning on working boards that have no backlight, or do you bypass the cleaning and go straight to replacing the fuse? Thanks again!
@rossmanngroup
@rossmanngroup 9 жыл бұрын
There is no point in replacing a fuse without using the multimeter. Is the fuse blown? Is there a short to ground in the backlight output causing the fuse to blow? If the fuse works, but there is no backlight, replacing it blindly is just silliness. If the fuse is blown and the short to ground on backlight output still exists, replacing the fuse is again, silliness. There is no shortcut to measuring, analyzing, and using the tool I talked about in my most recent video.

Great video! Quick question for you, when you said your success rate is about 50% is that from using the ultrasonic machine alone? Thanks again for this awesome video.

A bit late for a comment, but what is your take on 99% IPA compared to 99% (Ethanol) Alcohol?

I would guess that without the tray you get all sorts of wave reflection issues on the bottom / close to the walls. After all you won't sit right in the corner of a concrete wall to enjoy high fidelity sound either, but sit more centered.

I do, I leave things in there for a minute, sometimes two. I notice the norm is for people to put stuff in there for 20 minutes to an hour. Hearing that blows my mind.

It was funny to look after all the video , but I was confused a little bit .... Could you explain what's was really measurements system and also why you didn't flip around the board eight times, four for each side?

We have an old broken ultrasonic tank (ultrasonic broke 20 years ago and we've just been using it to heat water) at work we've been using for cleaning plastic casings on printers, this is finally getting replaced for a new one within the next couple of months. Due to the use it's being bought for it's on a bigger scale than your tank - we're getting a 145 litre one. However on seeing your videos I'm now wondering about the chances of it also being usable for pcb cleaning if we're careful to keep the heat and time down (we will be using proper ultrasonic fluid but tap water rather than distilled due to quantity needed to fill it). These motherboards would already be considered scrap (company laptops ruined by our own staff spilling drinks - we don't send them for external repair) so worth a try anyway but what are our chances of success.

Why a tray ? The bottom is like a speaker membrane, with impedance matching. A board at the bottom will limit its proper movement, generate harmonics, increase wear, etc.

Is an ultrasonic cleaner with a 6L tank really large enough for laptop repair? MacBooks often have "long and slim" motherboards that fit well (at an angle) but some other manufacturers (MSI, Acer etc) have bigger boards sometimes. Would it be safer to go for a 10L or would the large size go at a loss of cleaning power?

the cp500 is fine. some won't fit in fully, i just let them stick out a little bit and then turn them around to clean the other side. technically you're not supposed to do that, but it has worked fine for me this past eight years

You can bag the board in a ziploc with alcohol (or whatever cleaner), squeeze out the remaining air, then drop it into the tank. Cavitation still occurs, you eliminate the hazard of fire or explosion using volatiles in a US cleaner, no chance of cleaner or water residue if you aren't use a water based solvent, requires less solvent.

The shops I worked at were too cheap to buy good stuff like this. We mostly used acetone on the board and part to clean off all the flux and it seemed to work quite well. Make sure not to put it on ordinary plastic or it will melt the plastic. Most boards use nylon or some type of plastic not easily damaged by acetone. NOTE: I was working mainly on consumer and professional electronics. Audio, video and VCR, television, etc. Not motherboards but many of these devices I mention do have digital boards just like this. What do you guys think, is acetone and a toothbrush ok for making spot cleans on a board?
