The reason the umpire is up on that high chair is to watch the proceedings. The girls are 100% correct and the umpire should have overruled his first call and awarded the points to whoever won that point and that was the two young ladies who were arguing correctly. He might as well not even be there if he is so incompetent.

Overrule his first call based on what? Because one of the players complains? We are watching the replays of the ball hitting her body but he thought it hit her racquet, there’s no VAR or hawkeye he or the players can request for this type of situation.

@@VeganBeerMonster she was arguing correctly. The chair just didn’t see it. In her mind the point ended when she hit the opponent. Even the apology was made while she was hitting the ball not her opponent. @@Lishmaa That doesn't matter. You can not talk during the point. Only on a slow motion replay can you tell she didn't hit the ball. @@danielyang3140 it shouldn’t matter what the umpire thought, it should only matter what actually happened. When the umpire knew that he was clearly wrong he should have corrected his bad call. If she answered yes, then she loses the point, and if she answers “no, it hit my racquet” then maybe she wins the point. @HawkOfGP

Well the problem is that the umpire can't really take a player's opinion on what happened ahead of what he thought happened unless it's a player conceding a point the umpire awarded to them incorrectly. And as things stand, there are no rules in tennis (or any other sport as far as I'm aware) to punish players after matches for lying during them. Now, of course there are things that could be done in the big tournaments to avoid situations like this, such as giving the umpire the ability to see replays for contentious calls, but that's not in the rules of tennis now. So as stupid as it may sound, after he made the initial wrong call, he couldn't really change it since he can't decide ad-hoc that he saw the event differently from what he thought he saw in the moment. The only exception to this that we have in tennis is when umpires check ball marks on clay courts on close calls.

Umpire taking all the crap, but the opponents are the true a-holes for not admitting it hit her leg and not the racquet. At first glance and at full speed I also thought it hit her racquet, in that case the umpire would have been correct for calling a let. But you can see her stopping play and pointing at her leg once she turns her back and walks towards her partner. And for all those claiming umpire should have revised the call: based on what? Because one of the players says so? There is no VAR or challenge with hawkeye for balls hitting a racquet or part of the body decisions… Only thing he could have done is ask the opponents to be honest about it but if they still denied it, he can only decide based on what he has seen.

In slowed speed (.5 to .25 speed) it does confirm that it hit her. As many people mentioned: they have no playback that they can use right now. Maybe someday they will just like how now we use a camera system for line calls instead of judges. You try to sit up there watching EVERY ball strike, every motion made by each player, and you tell me in real time that the other player who got hit didn’t make an obvious racquet swing and hence as the umpire was turning his eyes or head saw the ball come back over the net.

The umpire's ruling is entirely correct, but perhaps saw it incorrectly. A ball does not typically bounce off someone's leg only to fly 4m, possibly why he ruled it had his the players racket. The fact that the umpire had not ruled a 'foul shot' means the ball was still in play at which point saying 'sorry' would be considered hindrance. Umpires make mistakes. Mocking an umpire is for making judgement calls is unnecessary. Had the roles been reversed and a male players mocked a female umpire, it would have been considered grossly unacceptable.

there is intentional hindrance (hitting racquet on the ground to distract players, loud cmon before point is over) and unintentional hindrance (lose trash on court, lose ball on court). this is definitely unintentional. At most it's a replay, not given the point to the other players, if the umpire didn't see that it hit the leg. in this case this is alison's point. also umpire is human, maybe it was not a good angle to see that it hit the leg and not the racquet. had the opponent possessed some good sportsmanship and stated it was my leg, then it would have been reversed.

I will play devil's advocate for the umpire. I personally can't stand these tournaments that are all Hawkeye and no actual line's judges. It is creating a sense of complacency for the Chair Umpires when the computer is doing 96% of the work. He was still wrong...but these plays are getting missed by Chair's because they are not as fully focused as they used to be.

Ridiculous umpire. The girls are playing decently. It can happen that you will be hit by the ball unintentionally. Tennis is not pageantry😂🤣😂

Opponent should have came forward and admitted ball hit her leg.

Not as easy as you may think. You play a 15 year career and you get burned by stupid "wrong" calls by umpires that go against you and yet every time that happens to your opponent to even that out, you are saying that the player shouldn't even that out but instead give in to every bad call that goes against her opponents even though her opponents don't do the same for her????
