The Judy Garland Show
The Judy Garland/Martha Raye medley is comprised of three dress rehearsal takes. In the first and the third Judy flubbed the lyrics on Moonlight Cocktails. In the first take Martha flubbed her entrance on Pennsylvannia 6-5000. The entire third take was aired, with Judy's flub intact and Martha saying "You blew it again Judy" which is hilarious in the original context of the three takes but a bit confusing on its own. So, I took the three takes and edited them together into one full performance.
Judy Garland
Martha Raye
Mel Torme
June Allyson

Despite the fact that one of Martha's husbands, composer David Rose, left her for a young Judy Garland, Judy and Martha remained close friends. This clip is priceless and showed how spontaneous and funny Raye was.

It drives me crazy that no one remember Mel Torme anymore. He was great. The Judy Garland Show was really a great show and how she made fun that the network would cut their funding or the show at any moment and Jerry Van Dyke was good as the floor manager guy.

Jacqueline Paul Mel Torme wrote an unflattering account of his time on that show and I wish I hadn’t read it. They look like they’re having a ball here. Their voices blended beautifully but I don’t remember very many duets, possibly because he didn’t suggest them.

Have the two box sets of the complete Judy Garland Show. I think it's a shame, that CBS canceled her after only 1 Season. Thank God this wasn't destroyed by CBS. Love the outtakes made during shooting rack episode. This one with Judy and Martha, they made it half way through. The guy holding their cue cards messed up, and Judy stopped the band, and got mad at the cue card guy.

Looking at Garland, here at 42 yo, and 5 years away from death, she seems so well, so healthy, so unlike what was apparently going on behind the scenes. Love Martha Raye....ever since I saw here as a kid in some Abbott and Costello film, and she had a pair of legs that were amazing. Ongoing competition during the war was btw her and Bety Grable as to the best legs. Her life story, I understand, was done in the Bette Midler film, with James Caan, where she sings "For the Boys"!

In fact, younger persons who comprise the demographic most targeted by advertisers and media aren't watching as much television, don't buy recorded music if they may get it free online, get most of their information online, so rarely read newspapers or magazines. It's a vastly different world than the era when TV variety shows thrived.

But I noticed that when she did smoke on the show she didn't seem to really inhale that much. Cigarettes seemed more like a prop. Perry Como, Frank Sinatra all smoked. Me too.

Yes, but these old standards that Judy Garland & Martha Raye sang are so much better than most of the songs only 20 years previous to today. As a mostly rock & roll fan, I may also say most of the rock & roll from 30-50 years ago (including from the punk rock era of 1975-80, but especially of the 1950s and '60s and early '70s) is vastly superior to any popular or rock music of today.

@hirchik Of course, smoking didn't impair their talents, and their skills increased with experience. But the chronic irritation damaged their throats. That's the sad truth. If you don't smoke, don't start! If you do, quit! But in any case, we can still enjoy the work of these old stars, these beautiful humans.

The only problem is we don't have the great talents and great songwriters in the abundance of the era when Judy Garland and Carol Burnett had their series' on television. This is the same problem why TV talk shows are so boring today--no more great authors (and many younger persons could not read them, even were great novels still being written) to have as guests, as well very mediocre singers who are all technique but no soul.

I agree, I am so sick & tired if people who were not even born commenting about things and times they never experienced, imposing today's standards and political correctness upon them. Many more people smoked even a decade ago than today, and certainly back in 1962-63 when this television series aired. A person was not a bad person or deficient in talent simply because he/she enjoyed smoking tobacco, then and still today a perfectly legal substance.

Mel torme called himself The Velvet fog ( his voice ) Andy proudly listed it on many of his album covers. Judy was somewhat unimpressed and behind his back nicknamed him"The Velvet smog". As he got a little older, he began to increasingly gain lots of weight and I always thought he should be called"The Velvet frog" because his face actually did resemble a frog when he got older. I don't mean this harshly however, he published a nasty book about his experiences on the Judy Garland TV show(6 months after she died) and most of it was not true.😱 (according to everyone who worked on the show : cameras, technicians, sound, producers, directors, guest stars etc.) The details of what caused all of this is in some of the many biographies of Judy Garland.🤔👎
