I stopped going to hairdressers due to the experiences, the long waiting, the style never being as you had hoped - the breaking. I recall going to a top hairdresser back in the day who used fairy liquid to wash my hair 😮 he said it helped to remove oil - I had my sister's wedding I was a bridesmaid - my hair was so dry it was awful. I shall trim it myself now as I haven’t done so for years. Funny you mention water. As was told again by a hairdresser, don’t use if water in the ingredient list as causes frizz!

Hello Karen I really enjoy your videos as they're so informative and straight to the point. I'm a little bit confused with sealing with oil. As we know oil and water don't mix, so by applying oil won't that prevent any further moisture / hydration from penetrating?
@KarenofCurlHouse
@KarenofCurlHouse Жыл бұрын
Hello there! Thank you so much! I appreciate it. So the thing with oil is that the oil barrier is still permeable, so its not an absolute seal. Water/moisture can still pass though. This is why although I moisturize and seal, I still have to moisturize like every day (the grey area on top) because the seals or barrier is not absolute. Before I used to just use moisturizer only and it seemed like I couldn't go hours before my hair felt dry again.
@creamycazz1
@creamycazz1 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Oil is def not an absolute barrier. A perfect example is when I got my hair pressed last Wedn for a quick Martha’s Vineyard getaway over the wknd. Literally right after my hair appt I applied some oil to my scalp & hair in the car to prevent any frizz from the humidity in the air. Well what do ya know, to my surprise, by Sat my hair was a wrap (& not in a good doobie way lol) It completely frizzed up, so much so that I literally just had to twist it in a bunch of 2 strand twists before I went to bed so that by Sunday it wouldn’t be a complete afro. Which normally I have no issue with but I was going for a smoother look for my vacation. The point is, oil is never a complete barrier from moisture. It’s still a liquid afterall, with molecules that move.. unlike, say, concrete. Lol

Hey there! So if you are rocking a blow out/flat iron, then you wouldn't use a leave in liquid conditioner because it is water based and will totally ruin your blowout. So oil is best for flat ironed hair. But you can certainly use the leave in everyday or every other day when you hair is textured. For a blowout, I would also get a protein treatment before flat ironing my hair to make sure it strong going into the blowout. I hope I answered your question.

Hi there! Good question! One I had to give some thought. Generally speaking, water is the best thing for the hair, so it will certainly remove some dust off the surface of the hair, but if you are someone who uses lot of styling gels, creams, heavy butters...I don't think water only will remove all of this and that will result in buildup which could result in a host of other issues such breakage. i think incorporating water rinses into your routine is ok, but I wouldn't advise it as the only method of cleansing. BUT I have never tried it before so my curious mind will probably try it for a few weeks to test my theory 😂

Hi Karen!! Hope all is well! I absolutely LOVE your channel! I have a question or two!! I’ve read that high porosity hair doesn’t need heat with a deep conditioner, what do you recommend? I also have been told by a stylist that certain texture hair needs trims more often than others. My daughter gets her hair trimmed every 4 weeks, myself every 6 weeks. I’m not noticing much growth between my daughter and I. Are our trims too often?
@KarenofCurlHouse
@KarenofCurlHouse Жыл бұрын
Hello there! Thank you so much! So high porosity hair doesn’t NEED heat or at least not from the dryer - because the cuticle layer is already lifted so you can allow your body to heat up the hair BUT I still use a hooded dryer (or streamer) because I have multiple porosities. Heat from the dryer won’t hurt if you have high porosity hair so it’s optional. Now I think every 4 to 6 weeks for a trim is excessive. Unless you and your daughter are constantly manipulating your ends , its way too often. And I don’t necessarily think texture plays a major factor in frequency of trim. But even still once a month is too often - I think it would be difficult to retain length at the rate.

yeah, all you will be doing is cutting off every bit of your new growth. On average, hair grows about 1/2 inch per month for most, So if you are trimming your hair that often you will not see length retention, your ends will look great! but your hair will remain the same length. @@KarenofCurlHouse

I largely stopped using the Denman brush for most of my wash days because it really pulls and puts a ton of tension on your hair if you detangle or style with it. My sister with 4c hair said the same thing about her experience, and her daughter who has 3a hair as well. I also get a ton of shedding with that or the comb. I started to use a proper detangling brush, like a tangle teaser style brush, and my split ends have reduced SO MUCH, and my shedding is 1/10 what it used to be.

Hi Luwana! Wait a minute -- why did you say 'sadly, your hair is 4b/4c'? Why is that sad? 🤔. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BIG CHOP! I'm so happy for you!!!!! Remember, regardless of your texture, its' unique and beautiful! Now is the time to get to know all of the amazing styling possibilities of your texture. This is when the fun begins!!!! So to answer your question, is the conditioner promoted as a 'protein conditioner' or as a moisturizing mask or conditioner? If it promoted as a protein treatment, then no, I would use it about once per month. Protein treatments have a high concentration of protein in them. Whereas even most moisturizing conditioner have a little protein and that's ok. So use the protein conditioner monthly and use a another conditioner weekly (in general). Hope this makes sense.

@@KarenofCurlHouse Hi again Karen! Lol. The conditioner is promoted as a deep conditioner, and it contains collagen and animal proteins. And yes, you answered my question VERY WELL😊♥️ Sorry, Karen. I guess I said "Sadly" about appearing to be 4B/4C because I'm still the victim of years of brainwashing from my grandmother, father, and even people who weren't in the family. Everyone always loved looser waves and curls, and anything tighter was viewed as bad, ugly, and hard to manage. At fourteen, when I finally got away from my grandmother doing my hair and an aunt who was really a beautician started doing it, she told me I had "nice" hair. I had NEVER heard of my hair being called nice. Then when two cousins did it once, they called it nice! I still don't know why they thought that. I know I still have to work on my mind set, and say positive affirmations about all of this! Thank you so much Karen! I wish I could meet you in person! Lol ♥️♥️♥️

I dont understand my hair….this is my hair process: I used to wash and deep condition every week then I found out that my hair is not dirty as the shampoo is still clean in my hands…and yes I must I agree I was a bit rough detangling so what I mean by rough when detangling is, I would use my wide tooth comb start from the bottom, and as I get to the top of my hair, I would use my hands to separate and instead of being gentle, because the hair would not separate smoothly I would just pull it apart while it’s snapping and crackling….. so now this last month July 2023 I don’t wash my hair every week. I wash my hair about twice a month and I can tell when it needs to be washed because my curls are not defined even when I use a bit of product. I don’t even detangle only when it’s wash day about 2-3 weeks so I find myself having to retwist my hair every night but now I’m extremely careful not to pull my hair I use little manipulation now as I did before my hair when retwisting I always put a product in the hair so that there is some slip, and when I have to section my hair and soon as I notice a tug, I stop gently pull the hair apart. If I can’t get the hair apart gently I will put a little bit more of leave in conditioner to create the slip to pull the tangle apart although it’s been just about a month I have not noticed any growth so with that said, why is it that when I re-twist my hair after having product in it from the night before my hair looks dull? When I wash my hair and deep condition I used to put a curling cream in my hair and my hair would be pretty with curls in the morning but I can get the same result by using a leave in conditioner cream in my hair, twist my hair up in the night time, remove the curls, and the curls are still defined and pretty so the next day I don’t put any product in my hair. I’ll just twist it up remove the curls the next morning and my hair is not crunchy. It just looks dull and dry but it’s not dry because I had put product in it the day before why does my hair look dull and dry when it’s not ? And I’m hoping this new regimen will help me to retain the length? WHAT’S WRONG WITH MY HAIR!!?????😢
