I've never used a wet palette before, but lately I've been getting frustrated with my paints drying too quickly on regular palettes, particularly gouache and acrylics. It makes it really difficult to blend, and I don't want to have to rush my paintings. So I've been reading up on the concept of wet palettes, and I figured it was high time to get myself one and see if they work as well as people say at keeping paint wet for a longer time!
There are many options but I found this Army Painter Wet Palette, and I really liked the look of it, so that's what I went with! It's also more compact than some of the wet palettes aimed at artists, which are much larger and won't fit easily on my desk while filming. This Army Painter one is aimed at the Miniature Painting world, so it fits nicely into frame, haha!
Today I will be unboxing the wet palette, figuring out how to use it, and painting a picture using gouache. I did not film acrylic paints this time, but I plan to in a future video so I can compare how the different paints behave in the wet palette.

Becky, I leave a few words here since this is your most recent video, you are a wonderful artist, I veatched quite a few videos where you are creating amazing art. I wanted to communicate something with you so I sent you a message to your email I found here on your channel, I just wanted to let you know, I hope I got the address right. Your kitty is absolutely wonferful, it is great when they are so loving and clingy because usually they are very independent. He definitely is a beauty and his tail, wow. I watched when you painted him, it was perfect. Also the way you painted that parrot it's absolutely beautiful and so realistic. I love exotic birds I have a mini-mscaw, but she's with my daughter, she's 30 yrs old this year and had her since she was a baby. They can outlive us. That wet palette is very unknown to me, I don't think it's very common here in America because most places are humid, except maybe 2 states in the west. I hope you get my email, I really would like you to read it. All my best to you and keep smiling 😊

Hi Judith, I received your email and have replied to it. Wow, 30 years old is amazing! Macaws are such beautiful birds. I didn't know there were mini versions; I just looked up a Mini Macaw and they are SO ADORABLE!!! 😍 Thank you so much for watching my videos, it means a lot to me! Take care and have an excellent day! ❤

Oh my goodness, Gandalf in the beginning was the cutest thing ever. That alone made my day a better one. I absolutely love the size of your Army Painter palette; I have a Sta-Wet palette, but as you mentioned, it's too big to comfortably use, but I do use it when I need to. When I use mine, I do ring out the sponge just a little bit before I put it in there. I love your abstract piece; how fun! Also, the nose hole and eye in your parrot are really spectacular. Gandalf at the end... 😂😆😂

The lorikeet was a fun painting to do, I've had that one queued up for a while!

Love your bird. FYI Materson's Sta-Wet palette is available in a 8.5" x7"x1" size. If you plan on keeping your paints wet for a long time, you may want to use distilled water. It should lessen chances of mold. Thank you for an enjoyable video.

I'm glad it was helpful! I didn't even know these palettes existed until I saw something about painting tabletop figurines and I knew that I needed to have one of those for painting in general. It's proving to be really useful, at least for smaller paintings. I haven't yet caved and bought a bigger one, this is doing just fine. 😄

I did the same and it worked great for acrylics. Less water was the secret- too much seeps through the paper just like what happened here ( I went overboard in the beginning too lol). Keeping it in the fridge made it last for weeks, and I never had mould problems either. Beautiful painting Becky 😊

I have a little Masterson's Sta-Wet palette. It's 7 x 8.5 inches. I got it on Amazon for $11 USD. I'm not sure what size the Army Painter is but it's $25 USD. The Sta-Wet palette was a game changer for me, I can actually enjoy painting with gouache, acrylic gouache, and regular acrylics instead of fighting with them.
@BeckyTregear

I haven't seen the small Sta-Wet palette, but it sounds like it's a similar size. The Army Painter is more in the "boutique" category I think, and all miniature painting stuff seems to carry quite a price tag. I do like it though! And yes, very much a game changer when it comes to paints that dry too quickly. 💜

Cute bird, I saw it on Instagram before this vid actually! They’re very similar looking to parrots. I see how this could be useful as I’m actually a slow worker and don’t like to work with media that dries too fast, tbh. That’s why I avoid acrylics😂 I actually thought the abstract was really fun too and a smart way to use up the paints on the palette. Gandalf is so sweet and of course he must have sensed a bird was involved because he was all over this video😂😂

Thank you! Lorikeets are definitely part of the parrot family, with their curved beaks. They make so much noise at dusk, when they all nest in a single tree. It's deafening! I had fun with that abstract too, heheh. I think this wet palette will be amazing at keeping acrylics wet - I really hope so anyway! Gandalf sure loves birds, he managed to catch one the other day. Poor thing didn't stand a chance against my massive feline! 😭

Worked great. When you close the lid you raise the humidity inside the container, for gouache you probably don't have to close the lid or pour the water in. (Just dampen the sponge enough to make sure the top paper gwts damp as well when you apply it.) It's great to experiment. The gouache turned out much better for you now, no more drying up! Looking forward to seeing what happens with the acrylics. Tfs.

Thank you! Yes, I definitely went overboard with the water, lol. I wasn't expecting quite an airtight seal and the humidity was much higher than expected! Oh well, less water next time is the key there. I will hopefully get to the acrylic paints soon to test them out as well. 😆

I have been using the same Masterson palette seal and it is huge but I've had the same one for 25 years at least! I use the cheap flexible dollar store cutting mats in them or palette paper if i need a disposable option. I was sent the redgrass games palette which is small like yours and it is a higher quality it seams but I haven't used it as much. I think I will try gouache in it for plein air as bringing my jelly gouache palette is heavy.

I've done a mini wet palette before that worked ok. I used vegetal paper (baking paper) and a normal sponge (those from the kitchen? Then cut it and placed inside a small box with a lid and it worked but I live in a humid place and it was a really dry weather but it kept my gouache wet :) The thing is that the paint may run like that if you fill up the sponge too much, you need to finds a Ballance sometimes, just damp enough to keep them wet... And distiled water prevents the mold btw. Acrylics don't work that well in my experience but if you keep re-wetting the sponge it works ok. Not that hard to make if you need a smaller one. The bird looks gorgeous 💓 (Edited BC typo)

My greatest tip is don’t get into Warhammer otherwise your wallet will cry 😂 Stay wet palettes are sooo nice, I wish I got this one instead of my Daler Rowney one - it’s way too big!! Though I cut the sponge so it fits my small rectangular plate so I can use it and then store it in the stay wet box till the next time I use it. It lasted me 2 weeks one time! And that’s because I discarded it after a finished project rather than the paint going dry. That crease in the foam is such an annoyance! Btw the masterton/masterson/whateverwasthatname recommend saturating the sponge with very hot water, squeeze the sponge out till it’s around 50% saturated (so still soaked through but not dripping) and for the paper on top - run it under hot water again, “squeegee” the water away from the sheet, then place it on top of the wet sponge. I’d recommend using cooled boiling water so there’s less chance of any bacteria lurking there. Also, could put a copper coin underneath the sponge, apparently that has a good enough sanitising effect! Hope that’s helpful x

I have my wet palettes for more than a month now. I bought two, Mastersons and Redgrass. Im only using the Mastersons now and it’s been more than a month and the first batch of paints I squeezed stayed fresh the whole time, with water top up every 2 weeks I think. I live in Western Sydney and it seems that the humidity here is nice to the paints so I dont worry about mould - im glad I can skip those extra steps “to avoid mould” I want to re-use the hydro paper (baking paper?😅) so I mix paints on a different palette.

Such a great video...So regarding the paint running everywhere its actually bc you put to much water in there...your first mistake was pouring water directing into the palette- i knwo you did it for convenience while recording but there is a reason why they said to wet the sponge outside of the palette...if it gets to wet everything runs together. For a stay wet palette to work properly you want the sponge wet but not over saturated and dripping wet-acrylics will run as well if there is too much water. I wet my sponge in the sink then wring it out a little so there are no drips- you kinda want the saturation of like a Clorox wipe. Anyway great video and thanks for sharing. Much love ❤

Beautiful painting! You are using too much water on the wet palette. If you need to re-moisturize it (a few days later), just use a squirt bottle to squirt some water along the sides of the hydro foam and the foam will distribute the water to its entire body. Do not use a cup to pour water directly on it because you will have no control over the amount of water coming out from the cup and it will most probably be too much water. Enjoy your Army Painter wet palette. This is a fantastic product!
