I bought this Bernardo Profi 900 lathe to use it in my own workshop. I bought a new lathe, because I wanted a lathe that worked right away, but it turned out the Bernardo lathe needed work just to be able to start using it.
Some things are quite good on the lathe, other things are terrible, in this video I will do my best to show both the good stuff and the bad stuff.
Within the first couple of minutes some of the video is low quality, sorry for this, it is only a very short time, where I have been using my smartphone for recording.
This is my personal experience, I know other Bernardo users may have different experiences, otherwise the brand surely would not have survived, but the truth is, I wish I had bought another brand and stayed away from Bernardo.
In my personal opinion this lathe is a long way from living up to Bernardo promises, maybe I was unlucky and got the worst lathe they have ever made, but I am left with something that needs a lot of work, I would have been better of buying a used lathe, at least I could have tested it, before I bought it.
If you are considering buying a Bernardo lathe, please see the video before you make up your mind, you might not be unlucky like me, but you should know the risk you are taking.
I hope you enjoy the video, take care.
25/8-23: Correction, some of the grinding noise was coming from the change gears in front, it reduced the noise somewhat, when I adjusted the backlash, I was running the lathe as it came. I think the gearbox is better, than I give it credit for in the video, but still not a silent lathe at all.

I can only imagine how disappointed you must have been to unbox a shiny new (and quite expensive) lathe only to find out that it was so badly designed and put together. I admire your gentlemanly restraint in the way you have related the experience, and thank you for sharing this so that others can make informed choices when buying a new tool 👍

I bought an Optimum lathe, I can see the similarities. Mine was a demo and slightly less than yours. I have found mine to be good so far. I opted for fully manual so all adjustments are via belt changes. I don't make that many things but they have to be accurate. Your video was very good in highlighting what to look for.

You did a great job making this video, I feel sorry for you, this lathe is badly built as you've pointed out. I have a similar lathe built by Optimum, the machine isn't perfect but I'm extremely happy with it, for the price I paid. Sorry you had to deal with all these problems. If it’s any help, I purchased a mill that had the same high motor pitch. I had to change the driver settings to stop the sound. Some machines lock you out of the factory settings. Dig around on the internet to see if anyone else has modified their settings.

I'm not sure, but I think it should be greased with anti corrosion oil and wrapped in plastic if its new, so probably its not new. In EU you can return your purchase in 14 days for any reason or no reason at all, and if they didn't inform you about that it automatically extends to one year. I think that's the best way to go.

Thanks, I agree, this lathe did not come straight from factory like this, but in any case, the quality should be better, and the paint should not be coming off like that, paint still comes off week by week. I bought the lathe through my company, and the protection and right to return it that we have as private persons, do not apply when dealing business to business. So yes, the dealer dumped this on me, and Bernardo in Austria is not willing to help it seems like. I am totally rebuilding the lathe now.

I bought 750 profi Lz with mill head and digital readouts. 95% Ok, some broken start/stop switch, some minor panel dents (probably in transit) Intermittent running etc. I had to fixed myself. Most of these machines are "manufatured" in Sieg China or Taiwan (doesn’t mean its bad) They are simply "assembled" and "branded" in the respective country. People on KZfaq saying "just return it" also dont understand the costs and logistics involved. Mine was shipped to Cyprus. Having said this, your machine has definatly been abused/dropped and i would expect Bernardo to be more accomodating. Maybe send them the video?

Machines made in Taiwan are very well made. These days machines made there are pretty much equal to machines made anywhere. Just don’t buy a machine from a vendor of cheap machines. High quality Taiwan made machines aren’t cheap! Chinese made machines can vary considerably. The old adage; “You get what you pay for.” Is still true.

It looks to me that they also painted over a thin layer of oil. This paint flaking is typical when oil is painted over. You can paint over oil when powder coating as well. In both cases the paint will badly flake off. It will smoke in a powder coat oven, so it’s easy to see what’s happening.

Thanks a lot for this honest review. Quite frankly, an an european educated mechanic, having worked on european machines, buying something chep from China will inevitably result in disapointment. I went throug the ordeals of buiing a chinese mini mill in order to do some hobby projects. Now my first project is to improve that shitty piece of cast iron to a certain base level, that makes the process of "hitting dimensions" something "skill based" instead of "oriental bazar".

you seem to have an issue with rust, so I would like to explain something concerning rust and casting. A friend of mine used to work at Pittler in Germany as an apprentice. Pittler used to be one of the high end brands for lathes. Now when my buddy was strolling over the courtyard with his mentor he asked him what all the rusty trash was doing there. The mentor almost smacked him (it was the 60s so that was still legal) and replied that this is in fact gold in the form of steel casting: Steel casting (as pretty much any casting) needs a lot of time to "relax". Of course at pittler they would remove the rust but you cannot expect this from a cheap chinese machine, but the rust in fact shows you that they gave the casting some time to rest and relax so it won't warp on you!

Yes, that is how you make cast parts, I am a mechanic, and I know a lot about cast engine parts, and how they are made and what makes a good part. And this lathe is the worst I have seen, at least they could have cleaned the casting before they put on filler and paint, which they did not. I have had two small Chinese lathes before, they were both really cheap and much better build quality. I also bought a Bernardo BF30 mill at the same time as the lathe, the mill is from another planet compared to the lathe, the mill have quite good castings and is quite well put together, if the lathe have had the same build quality, I would have been happy.

Trab, you bought a generic Chinese-made lathe with a local brand name on it. In my experience, the design of Chinese lathes is good, but the build quality is low. A generous coating of rust under the paint is normal with low cost Chinese lathes. So is holes drilled in the wrong places. You have choices - you can buy a quality European-made lathe, or you can buy a bigger Chinese lathe for half the price or less - but you will have to dissassemble it and rebuild the cheap Chinese lathe before you use it. One thing you must do: dissassemble the headstock and apron, anything that holds oil, and clean out the casting sand, metal shavings, and general rubbish the Chinese factories usually include at no extra charge.
@TRABWorkshop-ri4ql
@TRABWorkshop-ri4ql 29 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment, I agree, you have to lower your expectations when buying these Chinese machines and expect some work on it, but still, some are better than other. I have had mine own small workshop for 30 years, I have had lots of Chinese stuff through the years and still have, this is the third Chinese lathe, even the 600 Euro minilathe I had was a lot better build quality. Since 2009 I have had my own import company, I import air compressors, welders and stuff like that from China that I sell on my own webshops, so I know more about Chinese goods than most - this lathe is really worse than you should expect, even from the cheapest stuff, and it is not that cheap. Everyone have their right to their own opinion, I am just showing it like it is, if someone is happy to pay 4000 Euro for what I received, they should go ahead and buy one i guess. The mill I bought from Bernardo is quite well made, I believe it must be from another factory.

These import machines are very much built to meet the required price point, but yours seems to have a lot of issues. The paint on the chip guard, they must have completely forgotten to prep the material. The filler on the casting was a common method even on high quality machinery. The drive belt arrangement is terrible, it will work but won't have a long belt life. Machine tools pretty much always leak oil, I wouldn't worry too much about that.

As someone who works in a foundry i have to guess these lathes are outsourced in China.. We get some inclusions here and there but a casting so rough you have to use filler? idk.. If i were you i would have told them to get this right or you will contact your lawyer. Consumer rights are pretty strong in Austria. And yet you still went up and beyond with trying to fix it, i simply wouldn't have let them push me around like that. Honestly whoever thought it was a good idea to slap Austria on this piece of shit was stupid af. Should the product stop working within this time, the Guarantee claims undertaken by the guarantor in the Guarantee policy can be asserted against him/her (repair, replacement, reimbursement of purchase price or other remedy). If the manufacturing company guarantees the shelf life for a certain period of time, then it is regulated by law that consumers shall have an immediate claim for improvement or replacement of the item against the manufacturing company during this period. Problem in this case is, I bought it from a German dealer, and it was my company that bought it, business to business deals are not protected by law the same way as consumers are. But I must admit it has been the worst experience ever buying something new like this.

The worst part was that polish and pitting on the topslide. You couldn't fit anything in those milling slots with confidence. It looks like someone attacked that topslide surface with a flapdisc. A clear indication this lathe was allowed to rust, then tarted up for sale. What an awful brand.

Dreadful, a lot of Chinese imported lathes have issues. But certain importers do insist on good quality control... Bernardo are not one of them I'm afraid.

Ok, so I’ve been doing this for over 55 years. When posters say to buy old American iron, they usually have never done any machining and are just parroting what they hear. Old machines are just that. Old industrial machines can be completely worn out by the time a home shop person sees that very low price. The problem with old machines is that often, unless you’re lucky, you have to have the experience and tooling to fix, adjust, and repair these machines before they work properly. If you can’t do that, then buying one can be a very bad idea.

Used Schaublin, Weiler or any high grade Euro lathe will set you back at least 4-5 thausents if in good condition. Mint is 10 or 15,000. I was lucky to buy excellent Italian lathe for peanuts, but would not count on same luck again.

@@melgross I had a mill from production and it was worn out, i scraped it. I also now have Potisje 631P lathe built in 1982 that was in maintenance division in company near me, it worked one hour in 7 days. Company have closed in 1990. It was conserved untill 2005 when i bouth it. I have repainted it and i have changed most of radial seals beacouse of age. But from all aspects it is new, or like new machine. I also have tool room mil TOS FN25 that is in like new condition. There are some good and pristine condition machines out there, but we must know what and how to look. And to have little bit of luck.

@@sinisatrlin840 also, to know how to repair and bring them up to working order. As you were able to. I’ve done it as well. I’m objecting to people being told to buy old machines. American companies haven’t been in business for 20-30 years now, so all of those products are old. Many are worn out. Parts aren’t available or are extremely expensive. Newcomers to this don’t know anything about machines and have no way to bring g them up to a useful working level. They may get very lucky and get a good one, but it is just luck. I don’t think it’s worth the chance.

"and he offered me some paint" sorry that is not what is written in the Email. On top he offered you some "naturals", which I think means you can choose some additional item and get it for free. Given that this really just an optical issue I consider that a fair deal. Also: you could have simply asked for a replacement unit and he would have had to comply given EU laws.

I have made the video as transparent as possible, so everyone can make up their own mind, there will always be different opinions in these cases. The lathe have a retail price of 4000 Euro, I understand you would be happy buying this lathe, and recieve what I got, fair enough, then this lathe might be something for you, others might not agree. If you have seen the hole video, you know there is a lot more going on, than an optical issue. I have left out something as well, the video allready got too long. It is a business to business deal that is made with no warrenty, in a B2B deal there are no EU laws to protect the buyer, there is only whatever agreement seller and buyer agree on, therefore there are no VAT on the invoice, and no, I could not simply ask for a replacment in this case.

@@TRABWorkshop-ri4ql Sorry but I have to insist. You did not translate the email correctly. You left out an important part. In times of accurate automatic translation there is no excuse for that. As for the B2B deals: Even as a business client you have a right to receive goods free of damages / stuff that works according to the specifications. If that is not the case you can return it according to 1999/44/EG.

Whatever good you find on this lathe, the bad nullifies it. If this happened to me, I'd be mad as hell about it and it would be my mission in life to send it back for a full refund. It is an utter disgrace that substandard Chinese machines are now the norm and we let them get away with it. If this was a car, rest assured no one would buy them. As a machinists myself of 45 years, there is no way in hell I'd buy a Chinese lathe. You are better off restoring an old one. The Univ where I work, they bought a Baileigh milling machine which is a copycat of a Bridgeport. This mill is a piece of crap! It's an outrage that machines are being made so badly and then you have to spend time and effort making "upgrades" to fix them. It's depressing as hell that products being made today are crap. Fuck these Chinese made machines!!
