Today I unbox my dream Cartier-a watch I recently scored for an absolute bargain-and take a look at the brand's fascinating cultural impact, history, industry achievements, and how they created the world's first truly iconic luxury watch over 100 years ago.
With luxury watches from brands like Rolex, Patek, Audemars Piguet, and other brands becoming so expensive and overhyped with queues just to buy them, and some even in short supply, there are better options out there. In this video I share 6 reasons why the Cartier Santos holds its own against other in-demand watches, along with the best places to buy, and sweet spots in the used market. Is this the best value luxury watch in 2022?

Congrats, TGV! I wanted to share with you that I purchased my dream watch-the Tudor BB58 blue-for my high school graduation. After seeing your review of it, and watching your videos for a few years now, I saved for two years and bought it on bracelet a couple weeks ago. Now I’m wearing it on the original NDC strap. I hope I can share some photos of it with you, as seeing your videos definitely inspired me to start collecting. Cheers, take care!

I’m noticing a lot of collectors getting into brands like Cartier. To me it shows that collectors have had enough of Rolex and are looking elsewhere for their luxury purchases, after all watch collecting is not all about Rolex hype.

I think they are one of the few swiss brands that actually is finished to a luxury standard
@j.l.7264

@@oscarosullivan4513 this is such a random statement though, aside from panerai, which Swiss brand isn’t finished to the same degree? They all are. The people who takes any chance to make the same old complaint about Rolex availability are beating a dead horse. If you want one then get on the list and wait, if you don’t then don’t bother. It’s that simple. You never waste money on getting a substitute, because you will never get what you wanted at the start. The watch market is in a bubble right now and I think everyone will soon realize why Rolex had such a good value retention history while other brands don’t.

Rolex still holds a significant place in the world of watches. But Rolex is no longer "the" watch brand. Who wants to be on a waiting list for 2+ years for a Rolex, when you can go and buy a watch from brands such as Cartier or Omega, and not have to be on a waiting list for them.
@rafaeloliva6425
@rafaeloliva6425 3 күн бұрын
Perhaps some folks are put off due to low Rolex model availability. However, people will jump at the opportunity to buy one, given the chance. I own more than one rolex and are staples in my watch collection. People, dislike the difficulty acquiring Rolexes more popular models. Yet, once they posses one they appreciate why they are so very sought after. The Cartier Santos large, especially with the classic white dial is an amazing and versatile watch! With the black alligator strap I've rocked both suits and tuxes with no problem. On the steel braclet, it is casual yet classy, wearing a lien shirt and slacks. It truly a niche watch who's versatility is truly hard to match at any price point.

I was thinking, being unable to see the automatic/mechanical movement of a watch which has a solid case back, it really doesn't make a big difference as to whether it's a quartz or mechanical movement (other than occasionally having to replace a battery, at which time only a jeweler sees it - or you see it if you replace your own batteries).

""The distinctive square bezel and oval shape was inspired by the "New Machine Age" of the time, as well as various clocks that Cartier had previously produced...A blue sapphire cobouchon was placed in the crown - a gemstone chosen because in the medieval and ancient world it signified celestial faith and hope. They are also believed to have properties of protection and good fortune, perfect for somebody in the early days of flight."" You said it! And it's very true, and there's so much more! It's just beautiful how you do this. You bring the history to life (or perhaps back to life) and in such a wonderful way. You really do educate people, or at least inspire them to become educated. Cheers and thank you for another wonderful video!

My mother gave me a Cartier Santos (cabee) gold and steel for my 21st in the early 1980’s. it was my daily wearer for 20 years. I still wear it from time to time. It was the large model then but would be mid size now. It’s an automatic and only ever needed service once (so far). Fabulous watch and all things considered probably the best and most versatile design of all my watches.

The quartz was an issue for me for a long time but now as the owner of a tank solo large quartz it’s not even something I think about without the second hand. The design is what I like and if the price is right being quartz isn’t an issue. It’s also worth noting Cartier quartz movements are actually well finished.

Thank you Alfonso, very true indeed. Even if I was just a child at the time, that aesthetic runs so deep in me too. I recall so vividly looking at the expensive sportswear worn by fellow Italian friends of my father and thinking they were the coolest people I had ever met. The music, the cinema, the exciting new tech like brick phones and early Casio, I distinctly remember feeling an excitement for the future, like anything was possible. I guess that is fundamentally why I am drawn to it. Best regards, TGV

I have the original vintage (1985) Santos Carree (automatic/2961) - "the boxy" Santos as you described - no regrets. Loved the whole episode.. your background history really is excellent and brings the watch alive. I bought my Santos in 1998 in Paris at the Cartier boutique on Place Vendome. It was my first entry into a special watch and as such is dear to my heart. It's the unisex size, auto, 2 tone, gold roman numerals, blue cabochon on the crown, blue second hand and the wonderful Guillaume dial. All the true classic elements. I don't wear it that often as it is a small watch and the date is minuscule. But your enthusiasm has given me the desire to wear it more...looking forward to your review of it. Congratulations..

The square Cartier Santos steel & gold was my very first "luxury" watch which I bought new in 1984 at age 18. Being mechanically minded since I can ever remember, I was fascinated with the Santos apparent screws. I had to have that watch. It was serviced twice, first time as it has water dew inside and the second time as the original bracelet was worn out to the point that it was not anymore safe to wear. I retired it upon receiving it back from the last service about 20 years ago as I had bought a replacement watch to wear whilst it was away. I shall take it out of retirement when I return to Paris. It's beautiful, it's iconic.

Superb history lesson on the Santos & Cartier as a brand. I was checking eBay & Chrono24 as I was watching, to look at these timepieces. Quartz or auto does it matter.... A watch is a watch. You could tell how excited you were when opening that package and that adds to value of your videos as it’s show you are a true timepiece enthusiast. Later on this year I will hopefully purchasing my 1st ever luxury watch(pre owned), and you’ve thrown a spanner in the works with the Santos. I’m looking at Omega, Tudor; Meistersinger & Glashutte brands & now a Santos 😂 Keep up the great content and enjoy that Santos 👍

Never was a Cartier fan until I bought and sold a few of them after wearing them for a day or two before I delivered them I fell in love with the Santos and purchased a Two tone Large and I’m obsessed! Walked into an AD and walked out with it on my wrist. Couldn’t have been easier. Plus the AD threw in a free strap. Best purchase I ever made I cherish it everyday.
