Tried on a new mid-size mechanical Santos recently, and was far more tempted than I expected. I already have a great dress/sport piece that cost a fair bit less than a new Santos. But I love something a little different, especially squared cases. If I were in the market, I'd probably own one. Which is surprising, since I usually can't stand Roman numeral dials. The Santos is beautiful, I bought a slightly similar Santos with modified diamonds encrusted bezel for my wife at a good price in Hatton Garden. I have a 19cm wrist, and I wear watches from 34mm (OP Date) to 42mm (Seamaster 300). A big guy like me wearing a small watch may look odd to some people, but who cares! Wear what you like on your wrist!

I LOVE your video and the fact that you are coming to us from my native city of Philadelphia. All of the history of the wristwatch is in the Cartier Santos. I'm not a collector, I am merely a consumer and a tiny female of advanced years. But I became obsessed with the Cartier Santos, the history and it's incredible style a few years ago and went down the rabbit hole of learning all I could. And learning leads to searching and searching leads to buying.... Not wanting to appear ostentatious at the outset by putting the 29 mm x 41mm Cartier Santos de Cartier Galbee on my little chicken wrist, I purchased (online and vintage of course) a 24mm ladies 2 tone version, a limited edition with a brushed grey dial and raised gold numerals, that immediately became my go to transitional object every morning along with my glasses and morning tea. This version is small but elegant and it's been my daily driver. However, I'd never gotten over dreaming about how rugged and sporty the larger version might look dominating my wrist. Well, I'm sitting here at a ridiculous hour with my latest shopping indiscretion ( my price was VERY good ) it's tags still on, fretting and posing powerfully in the mirror in order to determine if I dare keep it. My thoughts in the wee hours, I could do without the date complication at 6 o'clock. The date read out says '22' ( I need to set it ) but the numbers are too thin and I can't really see them well. I feel like the VI fell off! This size feels large compared to my 24mm making me feel a bit like Minnie Mouse, and it's heavier for sure, but I could probably get used to that. Do I really need 2 of Cartier Santos Galbee? OK nobody needs these, we just WANT them. Maybe I should just sleep on it! ;-)

Ciao TGV! The Santos is a great choice, but IMO the tank is still the best Cartier -- refined like no other.

In the end I don’t think talking about price is vulgar, as money is life energy. Before buying it is valuable to know how much time one needs to work/trade their life energy for a luxury like a watch. Thanks for the review!

Since you first posted on this classic watch, I reach for mine more often. And I'm enjoying it again. It was my first high-end watch. I bought it in Paris at Cartier Boutique by Place Vendome in 1998. Two tone, gold roman numerals and hands, automatic and Guillaume dial. My only dislike, like you, is the tiny date window. It's superfluous.

It's a beautiful timepiece. You have stirred my own passion for collecting again. I took delivery of a lovely dressy Lorus yesterday. Not in the same league as your Cartier, but for the price I got it for, I'm amazed at its quality. I didn't want to spent a lot on a dress watch, as its something I don't wear very often. After a comprehensive revision at Cartier's in Paris, Im proudly wearing for a month now, my late father's Santos carré steel and gold, a gift from my mum, bought in 1981. They kindly accepted to polish the watch, they usually try to sell/change the scratchy parts. it's like new!!

This felt like the old videos i adored

A goal for this year is to add a Santos to my collection for use as a daily wearer. Deciding which to add has taken a lot of thought though. I've watched this video multiple times which both has and hasn't helped my decision making. A date window is too useful during the workday for me to not have one on a daily wearer. However, the current generation only offers that on the largest size while a medium size would work best on my wrist. The Galbee has been considered multiple times but I really do prefer the bezel and lug shape on the current generation and the lower water resistance on the Galbee is a concern as someone that usually doesn't take off his watch when washing dishes, hand washing some garments, washing the car, etc.. I've also considered all steel vs. two tone and while I really like the details of a two tone Santos, for a daily wearer all steel just makes more sense. While I wish Cartier would make a medium sized Santos model with a date complication, I don't have much hope for it and this year has a milestone birthday in it so I'd rather not wait for something that may never come. At this point I'm leaning towards the large, steel bezel blue dial model. While the white opaline dial is classic, it also makes the watch face look larger than it already is which I do not need. The metal numerals on the blue should also help with low light visibility a bit. Now if you ask me again in a month, I might have an entirely different answer. Even if there is no one perfect choice for me, there are many excellent ones.

After seeing your other video of the Santos when you first got it; the Cartier was in the back of my mind. Then this week with the reveal of the new Cartier line, I saw another new Santos. It caught my heart. After seeing all the Santos models; I have to say my new favourite is the Santos de Cartier Blue dial in large. OMG! ❤️

I own a medium Santos, even with my 7.5” 19CM wrist, it’s a thing of beautify. I prefer the smaller size, though I did wear a large Tank and that was honestly too small for my wrist. XL tank would have been perfect but I didn’t want a date, trying to keep it as a cleaner dial, thus going with the medium. Great video!

Great video. It’s worth mentioning that those straps are impossibly to attach to this model. The friction pin is set flush against the case. You need a specially made strap for the Santos.

Totally true about "getting pulled back in". After wandering into Michael Spiers of Truro (where I was on vacation for a few days last summer) I swore that I was going to put the brakes on watch collecting - at least for a couple of years. Now I see the newly released Calatrava with a charcoal grey dial. Kudos to you, Patek: you know how to part a fool and (not trivial sums of) his money!🙃

The Santos is just beautiful. The fit and finish is superb and the more you look at it, you really start to get pulled into the way the bracelet and bezel just seem to melt into the watch. It looks like it could have been designed by Salvador Dali. This is a perfect watch for a high end quartz, which I am really a huge fan of.

This video and the arrival your Santos are so timely! I just got interested in Cartier watches a few days ago. Probably it isn't the most inventive thing to say but I absolutely adore the Tank, I'm head over heals in love with it. I don't even know how it happened - I never had a particular liking for square watches but this one... it's so striking in its traditional simplicity: the Roman numerals, the slightly rounded case, I cannot get over it. Also, I like the fact that some of them are really quite small because it wouldn't do for a watch of this kind if it were as big as, say, the newer Reversos are (also, I happen to have a rather small wrist). Currently, the Tank is certainly not in my range but maybe one day. I really like your Santos as well, it's wonderful that it keeps the old world charm so typical of Cartier watches (that dial...) but at the same time manages to be really quite sporty and different. Anyways, thanks for the review, it's always a pleasure to watch your new video, Sir!

And it's so true about a quartz watch with no seconds hand - I have a two-hander seiko tank dress watch and without the second hand it's almost like I forget it's a quartz. If a manufacturer could figure out how to make a quartz (in solar even better) second hand sweep like a mechanical it could be a gold mine!

Love the Santos my daily drivers have been my seiko Arnie Pepsi and Luminox atacama 1820 (just got this back from Slatzmans for service I’ve had this watch since I was 13 and fell in love with it again)

For some people who work similar times and for multiple clients like yourself, the job makes the date complication all the more important. I check the date multiple times a day because the job necessitates I add it to documentation or remember it again, and looking at a phone (which I loathe) is way slower. So it really depends on the job you are doing, not the days/hours or whether you have weekends off.

This Santos is a thing of great beauty! Doesn't matter that it's quartz as it doesn't have that annoying quartz seconds hand. Love the colour of the dial (Patina?) and the bracelet. It just works! Probably a bit small for my wrist (and definitely too small for Hugo's!) but it is a classic and suits you down to a tee!

In pursuit for my dream the Cartier Tank .. i found a cheap Soviet square Sekonda, with an unusual and record movement the famous slim 2209. Until I will afford the Tank, this is the one for me
