Adventures with a Very Small Lathe

I recently got a new Chinese CJ0618 Mini Lathe, very similar to the well known Sieg C2 lathe which is resold by Harbor Freight, Grizzly, and other names everywhere. I have a few plans for this lathe, but the main reason for buying it was to finally answer all the questions I get asking whether the Proxxon PD 250/e is worth the money, or if a Chinese lathe is a better deal.
In this video I talk a bit about the problems I found unboxing and cleaning the lathe, my first impressions of the lathe, and the videos I plan to make using it in the near future. Input and suggestions are welcome in the comments.

A few points to emphasize, which may not have been completely clear from the description and voiceover: 1. This lathe is marked as a CJ0618-3B model lathe, but has no other real branding information on it. The design is similar to the Sieg C2, but there is no other connection to Sieg that I know of. 2. The lathe was sold absurdly cheap as part of a batch from an anonymous Chinese eBay trader shipping from Eastern Europe. Based on what I've seen it was probably a factory second, or QA reject being sold off. 3. I am not at all unhappy about getting it in this condition, and have no intention of sending it back. Given the price, and the complete lack of proper branding, or reputation, I expected something at the lower end of the quality range. I did this to find out what the really cheap end of the mini-lathe market is like, and also to learn how to take a machine in poor condition and improve it.

Despite all the problems, I'm not necessarily saying that I don't think lathes like this are worth buying. Most of the problems are due to sloppy assembly, and preparation for shipping. At it's core the lathe bed is a decent casting, and the bed itself seems to have been well ground. Just as Stefan Gotteswinter likes to say, this is really a kit for building a lathe rather than a finished lathe. I'm certain that once I've done a bunch of work on it, the lathe will be great, and for people who have more time than money, it could still be the right purchasing choice.

@@AdventureswithaVerySmallLathe I appreciate that...Thank you! However, this will be my 1st metal lathe. I think, before purchasing one, I'll follow your experience with this to see if the issues you've found are things that I think I can work through...I am an engineer, and am mechanically minded, but am nervous about tinkering with something that's going to spin metal at multiple thousands of revolutions per minute. :)

@@ChrisShenar, I too faced a similar delemar when considering "what" to buy as my first lathe... My analogy came down to this, "Did I want a lathe to make projects or a lathe that IS itself a project..?" I'm not a Machinist nor do I have past experience with rebuilding this type of equipment so I went with something that'd work correctly straight out of its box & so I could learn a degree of precision while actually making usable stuff. Eventually I settled on a Proxxon PD 250/E (same as Alistair's) because it fitted my requirements, had a good range of accessories available & it suited the scale of work I intended to make. I had one of those lathes and it didn’t have any of the problems you had. It almost looks like yours may have been a returned lathe that someone monkeyed with. The main thing I had to do was to shim the lead-screw pillow block so it ran parallel with the ways, shim the apron so the half-nuts were centered on the lead-screw, and to scrape and Lapp the underside of the ways near the tailstock because it tends to be thicker near the tailstock on these lathes and the carriage would bind near the tailstock. I also had a second hole milled for the compound swivel to move the compound back a little. And did the tailstock cam lock mod. Once the lathe is set up properly it is a very good hobby lathe. I sold it to a friend after I bought my big lathe. The one thing I do miss is having readily available parts like change gears that were inexpensive to purchase. I think I paid around $50 for a 4 jaw chuck. Have fun fixing up your mini lathe. Chris

I have a similar lathe, CQ9318 (smaller, with metal gears), which I bought in 2012. It is precise, but it has big problems with the tailstock. From last year I did experience same problem with the belt, at higher loads it slipped and made huge noises. I 3d printed a holder for the motor from PLA, with holes for the 2 screws, then I glued (with super glue) an emery cloth 100 grit on the holder flat side for adherence (I didn't do it from the beginning and when I tested and it slipped again because PLA has a very low adherence). I bought 2 stainless steel threaded bars M10 and M6 (the best because you can tighten them stronger). M10 threaded bar was drilled with 5 mm and tapped M6 (motor thread holes). It is much better now, it doesn't slip anymore, but the belt is new and very noisy, this I don't know how to fix it....

Wellcome to the wonderful world of the Chinese mini lathe. I haven't had quite as many issues with mine but that was luck of the draw. The only part of the lathe I have not modified is the bed. Now after months of improving function I finally have mine the way I want it. Perhaps they should be sold in kit form so that the purchaser can hand fit each and every component... At a greatly reduced price however. Good luck

I guess I was more fortunate when I bought the 7 x 12 HF lathe. The clean up at least I did not have grit in the protective oil. The shipping bolts were bent but everything was still very tight and in place. Even though I could make good material cuts I guess I watched too many video on upgrades. I put in angular contact main bearings and metal drive gears in the head and wish I had not even done that as the results were actually going the wrong way on thinking it would be more accurate and stronger. I did find in that tear down I only have three bolts holding on the headstock and not even a fourth hole to put in a bolt. My best add has been a quick change tool post! Interesting your lathe had red paint in the bed groove but the rest of the lathe is not red. I thought some video were of interest where they already had a big lathe and mill to make mods on the little lathe! I am not that lucky.

I bought the same lathe in 2018 from the Swedish importer expecting it to have some issues. Thought I'd learn a lot by fixing it. I have done that. Had only one of the 15 problems you mention, but some others. At 1.50 you show the nonfitting gears. ARC Eurotrade has a pdf the Sieg one and on it you will find part 48 Mount. The left screw hole on that part is low be about 1 mm.Can be fixed by expanding the hole. Also the notches for the forward/back leaver should be incteased. Don't dispare, with proper adjustments you will be able turn within 0,01-0,02 mm. Good luck.

" I've never seen a machine so bad right out of the box". Well, if you saw mine... LOL 😂 😂 Among many other fundamental repairs. Out of the box was yesterday, so quite fresh still. Anyway among first repairs. Repair/reface back plate and chuck. Yes on the spindle! Chuck run out was in excess of 1mm!!!! Not microns, not tenths of mm, but more than 1mm!! What about that?! Absolutely insane. The backplate had been repeatedly hit with a hammer. So was deformed and twisted! BTW fundamental repairs, refer to absolutely needed repairs to make it work. And that was not even the beginning! Yep, I guess I bought a "project". ;-) The only good news. Is that in one afternoon I was able to repair/fix several things.

The problem is that there are essentially identical-looking lathes out there that range in quality from being fit only as mooring blocks to being quite usable lathes pretty much out of the box. There are also single speed and back-geared models out there that look the same from the front. There are a number of sources (for example Warco here in the UK) from where you can acquire a sorted example. Unless you value your time at way less than minimum wage it's probably worth going to one of these sources. I have been using a Clarke lathe for about 10 years (actually belonging to a pal who doesn't have workshop space for it so lodges it with me) and it produces very presentable results.

Yeah, the proxxon's are orders of magnitude better. I have a small chinese import and a pd400. I spent over 12 hours cleaning the grit and grime off the import. All the leadscrews were 'grindy', after the clean,.it's actually acceptable. However, the electronics are mounted badly; the PCB is mounted on an aluminium block with a thin piece of plastic sheet as insulation, it's almost like OVP film, it's so tight the hole through components legs are embedded in the plastic, it will eventually short out due to vibrations; I'll be rebuilding that! In contrast, the PD400 was awesome out of the box. The only thing that annoys me is not having a quick change gear box on it. So, I might be buying expensive import in the near future... I know what I'm in for. ;-)

Here in the US, I purchased a larger Sieg-based lathe through a terrific retail integrator LittleMachineShop.com back in June. It was in much better shape than this unit, but I keep chasing out demons and found similar items you listed. The biggest were: how extensively that grime and packing waxy grease had to be cleaned, horribly adjusted gibs which ultimately failed until I stripped them down and replaced screws, bolts, etc., and the ways also had to be stripped and stoned extensively. The paint job is fair. But now it’s running better. My next focus will be chuck runout. Sigh. On the other hand, LMS has great service and support, no to mention parts. I hear of Proxon, but I don’t think they do business here. My motto with Chinese made tools is “hobby project in a box.” I’ve had colleagues try to bring quality systems to other industries there, and lets just say it is an enormous jump for them to truly grasp the value of Total Quality Control. It will be a while until the region makes this cultural jump.

I suspect the Chinese are perfectly capable of making good equipment but when people are buying on price, you will never get the "good" stuff. 3 years ago I bought a Chinese lathe from a respected seller. It had a few minor issues but came W/O the often complained about grinding grit. I considered a smaller lathe but am now happy I went for a much larger one. I think this one has paid for itself by the repairs it has made to the production equipment in the plant. I bought it as a hobby tool. In spite of coming with a good set of accessories, I've needed to spend quite a lot on additional items to make it more useful. I quickly found that I needed a mill to go along with the lathe and more accessories for that. Some of the Chinese accessories have been very good, some not so much. But I wouldn't be machining if I had to pay the price for European made. KZfaq "University" has been a great help.

@@marcmckenzie5110 Same here! In the past year, I’ve come into possession of 3 (like I really need 3! But 2 were free!) Chinese lathes. The first is a 9 x 20 sold by Harbor Freight 20 years ago. Got it unused and still on the shipping pallet it was bolted to in China, in incredibly filthy condition. After complete disassembly, fixing issues and reassembling, I’ve still fought numerous nagging issues. The second is a Grizzly G0765 7 x 14 mini lathe that supposedly not a Sieg unit, also new and unused, and it shares many, but not all, of the issues that the video unit suffers from. The last is a HF 7 x 12 Sieg mini lathe. Same situation there and again a brand new unit! Motor mounting on all 3 is pathetic along with a total absence of tightened bolts! The 9 x 20 is finally producing good results, I’m still wrestling with the Grizzly (Big Boy tailstock that they tout as a selling point is a big letdown), and the HF 7 x 12 is actually the star performer of the two minis! Of course LMS is the go to for mini lathe parts, but take the time to look to Grizzly also. Many of the mini lathes & mills that look similar to Grizzly models are the same machine, and if you compare individual parts diagrams and part numbers you’ll find that drawings and pn’s are the same except Grizzly adds a few extra digits before the number on a HF diagram. On some things Grizzly is actually cheaper and shipping is less.

It does look almost identical to the lathe This Old Tony bought, though I agree with his comment. If you are thinking about buying one of these, go for it! They are so cheap that it's worth it, no matter how it works out. You can always chalk it up as a learning experience.

Other than that, it's not a bad machine... But seriously, there's a real need for info on the fettling that these Chinese lathes require to get running properly.

If this is how a new one arrives, I sure would hate to see what condition a used one would be in. Oh, actually it would be the same since they are unusable to begin with.

The Proxxon is still my main lathe, and the one I use for most work. I bought the Chinese lathe so I could better understand the difference between the two types of lathe, and use it as a base for projects while I learn how to modify, improve, and bring a cheap lathe up to the best standard possible.

I bought a 7x10 a few years ago and besides adjusting the carriage gibs its a beast (for the work that fits) .005 runout. The one it this video is absurd. The bed is for a different style lathe as the head. The head fits a 7x10,12,14 and the bed is for a 8.5x etc... you can see them at littlemachineshop.com. Don't be discouraged by this video, they are great starter lathes and can cut coldrolled steal with ease.

Yes, assembly and packing seem to be the problems. Decent basic engineering subsequently destroyed. May come from using an untrained, underpaid and under appreciated work force, something those with the power over there need to address - it damages their market opportunities. Such faulty product should not be 'auctioned off' at all - it should be destroyed or rebuilt. It will be very interesting watching how you restore this 'kit' of parts. BobUK.

There is a lot of grey business in China, where somebody will recover or steal discarded reject parts from an actual reputable factory and hammer something together that vaguely looks like the final product with random hands in a random basement. Probably the only thing that can be done is to have the manufacturer destroy key components of rejects before they send them off to recycling, but this is not very economical. There's a handful manufacturers, there is price pressure since they serve the white label market, and whoever implements this measure first is losing a lot of money or passing it onto the price of the product and losing customers.

Holy crap was that how it arrived as a new machine? I buy Chinese stuff now and then and if it’s not fit for purpose I seek a refund. This will make an interesting repair video but we shouldn’t stand for this. We (the rest of the world ) should not let China sell us this crap at any price. They choose the selling price and state what the product can do. If it falls short we should complain loud and long. They are taking our money and selling us total crap. That is not a problem that slipped through quality control. With that many problems they simply ship when most of the parts are bolted on some how. Thanks for pointing out what these lathes are actually like!

This should be returned, its appalling. I bought a mini lathe 3 years ago and while it had some niggles it was generally clean, no grinding particles, in good condition and transported without damage, and mine was in a cardboard box, not the lovely wooden crate you got!!!

Sad... we all know chinese products have a low quality - not because they can't do it! They can make very high quality pieces if desired. It is because they are working on the "lowest bidders" and thus costs are low and manufacturing quality is as low as possible. The lathe you got is well below the "lowest possible" I think - so badly damaged from shipping (i.e. improper packing) and low grade manufacturing that I would return it to the seller with these comments. Still - this video may force the chinese makers to see how bad things are... It can't be, thinking about it, any worse that that.. except if you get it in two (broken) halves.... A brand new lathe that comes and is useless? My mini lathe which I got from a friend is 49 years old and works like a charm.... That should be a very interesting project - restoration of a brand new lathe... A very sad project...
