Is everyone in Utah a Mormon?
Is everyone in Utah a member of the LDS?
Seriously, is everyone in Utah Mormon?
We’ll answer those questions and more. So, grab your mountain bike and your BOM, we’re gonna unbox the state of Utah!
Open: Oh a Mormon church. Or a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a very important part of Utah’s culture. But it’s also very private. Like if you’re not Mormon, YOU can’t go inside. But Mormons say it’s not about secret. It’s about sacred. The Mormon church is a mystery to a lot of people, and a very uniquely American religion. Members of the mormon faith are aware that they are sometimes seen as a source of mystery and suspicion. The membership numbers for the LDS are shrinking, and today, about 1.7% of America’s population is Mormon. That’s about the same number as the Jewish population.
Yes, it’s true that Mormons have a big influence on the politics and everything else in the state, but this whole state isn’t Mormon. Sorta. In order to get a well rounded view of the state of Utah we need to get out of the church and out of the home and head out into the rest of the state and see what else is going on. Only then can we truly know what it’s like to live in Utah.
This is Utah. As you’ll see, most of the population is in the Salt Lake City metro area, and that area is growing super fast. There’s also a lot of other stuff going on in Utah, though, especially when it comes to exploring the outdoors. Utah is a very interesting state, and there’s something different around every corner.
We’re going to begin here in Southwest Utah. Now southern utah is one of the prettiest if not the prettiest part of Utah. Right here along the Arizona border are many of Utah’s national parks, touristy towns and St. George.

Hello Blanding. Love it there. I’m in similar town on edge of Navajo rez. Very Mormon. Very “redneck.” Family oriented. Good ppl. Lived coast to coast. Almost 40 yrs in this little wonderland. Life is simple. Better. Daughter’s a techie. She was leery about taking transfer - 15 yrs ago - from SoCal to SLC. She & husband loved Bountiful, UT. They were just confused by all the neighbors showing up to help them move in! Sorry to further promote UT but Mormon communities are just nice.

Utahn here! 👋 Born in Glendale, raised in West Valley. At ~25 I moved to Midvale. I’ve now lived in Missouri for almost 6 months. Utah is absolutely amazing. West Valley crime can suck. But it definitely isn’t terrible. I’ve been on almost all sides of Utah. When I was homeless, I was always so surprised by how many people were willing to make small acts of kindness. The laws determined by the church are definitely the most annoying thing. Rent is high, house prices are high, but the pay is pretty decent in most places, & the organization of the state makes it almost all okay. I wish more states would adapt the same “road organization” Utah has.

Lived here for nearly 50 years. It has changed and evolved over time. Most Utahns are adverse to the constant migration of people transplanting here from other states. The quality of life has diminished as a result. Housing, food and other prices have escalated while the wages have remained low. Crime has definitely increased and downtown Salt Lake was once a safe place to be in the evening if you were alone. That’s no longer the case. The temple is NOT a church. There are church buildings and anyone can attend.

Little things people take for granted we’re just no longer possible (or permitted), in Los Angeles. The fact my child could go to any public school in the area and not have to worry about my child’s safety (or education), was amazing. Also, apparently Utah likes freedom as well (compared to Los Angeles). Best thing to happen to our family, despite REAL Winters. Highly recommend (both moving to Utah and exiting California).

I laughed at your comment about how people from Utah complain a lot. That statement is completely true! I manage an apartment building in Seattle and had multiple residents relocate from Utah which was a complete nightmare. They moved to Seattle for a Church group and immediately started complaining about everything and their neighbors. Seeing them transition into a large city like Seattle was a bit entertaining. They started changing their tune and realized that living in a big city has a lot of variables that are not in your control. This goes the same for residents from Idaho. Definitely was a learning and entertaining experience.

Awesome video, Nick 9:00 when you talk about the Mormons, they're led by both the conferences up at the Salt Lake temple and tabernacle, but also by BYU in Provo, which trains missionaries and is one of the leading language schools in the country where they offer many world languages. There is also a BYU campus in Idaho. 14:00 one of the reason the problem with homelessness is rising is partially because there is a large wage gap in the state. Apartments start around $800 a month, but the minimum wage there is still the federal rate, so many entry-level jobs only pay between $8-10 an hour.

I'm one of those tech nerds that moved to Utah for more opportunity from the DC area haha. When I was still an active convert to the LDS church I actually disliked it pretty strongly. Since going inactive and finding my own crowds, it's definitely grown on me. The mountains are to die for, and for the most part, people are kind (but awful drivers). Just need to find your own little piece of paradise wherever that is. Pretty accurate video haha.

Pictures do not do this place justice.

I worked in Provo for 6 months and lived in Sandy. No one ever asked me if I was a Mormon, they did ask me where I was from a lot. I use to tell them New England where Joseph Smith was born, they seemed happy with that answer. Anyway super nice place, super nice people I enjoyed working there. I was told that the homeless like Salt Lake because the Mormons are really nice to them, give them food and what not. But I didn't see any homeless camps in Sandy or Provo. I moved to utah in the 70's, I am non mormon and live in the Utah valley area. I would say that some of what she said is true but then I guess it matters what area you live in. I have had neighbors tell their kids they can't play with my kids because they don't go to their church. This has happened in different places I've lived here. In MY opinion church and state are not separate and most people I know are for the GOP no matter what.

@@rayb.6537 I have been hearing that SLC is getting bad with homeless. I used to work right downtown back in 2012 and it wasn't bad at all then. A few would hang out near the entrance to City Center on Main Street, and of course Pioneer Park had them milling about all the time, but other than that it wasn't so bad. I can't tell when I talk with people from back in Salt Lake if there really is a homeless problem or if it just seems bad to them. Perhaps if they came out to the Bay Area they might have a different perspective. I liken it to when I used to commute into SLC and thought the traffic was HORRIBLE! Then I moved to Houston and found out that I had no idea what traffic was.

I have lived along the Wasatch Front (SLC-Ogden) for 51 years. It was a great place to live 20 years ago, but has become not so great. Traffic is terrible and home prices are sky high from what they used to be. All the recreation areas are way overcrowded. If you're okay with traffic and crowds you may like living here, but my wife and I when we retire are getting out to someplace with less congestion and cleaner air!
@JasonOwensYT
