It's popular to debate the merits of the Capitol albums and the comments section here is no exception. While I agree the UK albums are superior in every respect, I think one should still enjoy their Capitol albums if they own them. It's best to just relax and not get too fussed. On the occasions I play them, I find that I quickly stop worrying about the altered sound and just enjoy the music for what it is. The Beatles created songs that transcend whatever format you listen on. The Capitol albums are a good slice of nostalgia and represent the way that millions of teenagers fell in love with the Beatles. They are a nice snapshot of history. I'm also a big fan of the Capitol singles with their picture sleeves. Whenever I spin the orange/yellow swirl label 45s, I'm nine years old again.

"The Early Beatles" record is a Scranton pressing with just a different (later) symbol (anvil). This replaced the I AM triangle. Looks like some mismatching as far as inner sleeve, record, and jacket with some of the first albums you showed... Jacksonville cover, Scranton record, etc. The hole in "Beatles VI" is most likely an after-release promo copy. That is a basic retail copy that was made into promo with a simple hole punch. (U.S. pre-release promos, usually had label identifiers, stamps, white labels, etc.) I just have to say, too, that this channel is quickly becoming one of my top 5. The presentation and content are remarkable. Keep up the great work!

And of course the number stamped on dead wax looks like it sorta dates back to the 1940’s when Capitol singles were on 78 like Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, Johnny Mercer, Art Russell, Peggy Lee, Stan Kenton, and other artists came to the label. For the children’s product, Mel Blanc, the voice of the “Looney Tunes” was on the label as well.

They used the anvil stamp til late '63,then switched to the triangle-they figured for a basically an oldies album,which Early Beatles was,to use the old script stamp once again for just this title.And the Something New is indeed,a "waxy"groove copy,indicative of the July/early August'64 first pressings.However,The Early Beatles shown is a second press,as the first labels used were glossy side printed,then switched to the flat matte side,not long after.

My big sis had “Introducing” and I used to sneak into her room for a listen. I was nine or ten at the time. This was 65-ish. But I remember just how great the sound quality was on it compared to “Meet.” Obviously I had no technical expertise at that young age but I remember feeling it. I found an original lately in very nice shape and my observation still stands! Great job, VeeJay! You may have been crooks but you knew how to master a record!

I always avoided the US pressings like the plague. Didn't regard them as being official canon, so to speak, and many were a pale shadow of their UK counterpart. However, since getting more into collecting Beatles vinyl, I found I couldn't ignore the Capitol releases any longer. And actually, some are rather good, especially Meet the Beatles, Rubber Soul and, of course, Magical Mystery Tour. So much so that my most recent video was all about the US Capitol albums! I guess I finally saw the light...or joined the dark side, depending which way you look at it.
@MattHayesVinyl

I understand the sentiment, but especially with the early albums being more “collections of songs not good enough to be singles” have always been decent assortments of the early songs. Especially since they were more likely to have a couple of singles on the discs. It’s really Rubber Soul on for me where it’s no question the UK albums have the “proper” track listing imo. I certainly don’t go out of my way to listen to anything but the uk monos (and analog stereo Abbey Road), but I never disliked listening to any early capitol record (aside from missing I Saw Her Standing There on the early capitol slate). All speaking from a track listing perspective as opposed to audio quality.. My favorite record is probably Revolver and the Capitol version legitimately upsets me. It takes the most interesting experimentation out and with Paul’s more standard pop fare of the time dominates instead of balances.. all amazing songs but such a “small” exclusion of a couple tracks really changes the dynamics of a piece of art. Respect to anyone else’s opinions this is just what I thought about based on your comment about opening up to the US catalog. Ultimately, seeing the growth of the Beatles and their statements through their art as they worked through the years are “best” observed with the now standardized “cannon”. But, it’s all in good fun in the end.

I always thought the hole punch or a notch cut in the spine was a "closeout/sale" sort of thing so you wouldn't be able to return it later. That way it is "all sales final"
@mjanovec
@mjanovec 3 жыл бұрын
The hole punch can mean it's a closeout or it can mean it's a promo. Either way, the idea is to keep them from being returned to stores for attempted refunds. In this case, I lean towards this record being a promo, simply because very few core catalog Beatles records ended up in the closeout bin. (The Tony Sheridan stuff could be seen in the closeout bin, once fans caught on to those recordings.) The core catalog sold good enough over the years that no distributors or stores were stuck with their copies for very long. Capitol and EMI were regularly re-pressing the Beatles albums over the decades to keep up with the demand. And while the demand dipped a bit from time-to-time, it never went away.

I always found that there was something lacking in the US capitol sleeves. They just seem dull when compared to the UK sleeves. But that didn't stop me from getting them. Since I'm from Canada I always jumped on getting Beatles LPs. I did stumble on a Meet the Beatles LP in the early 90s in Victoria, British Columbia with a hole in the top corner (it had a Purple capitol label). The sleeve itself was crisp and in good condition. So I played it and it sounded the way it sounded, but then I got to George Harrison's Don't Bother Me Track. And I noticed that he sings an extra "don't" right before he sings "don't come around, leave me alone, don't bother me". I thought the album skipped so I played it again to make sure and sure enough he sings an extra "don't" before he sings the rest of the lyrics. I never discovered why this happened. The US Meet the Beatles doesn't have this extra "don't".

In regards to the "Beatles VI" album: the hole punch meant it was indeed a promo. This was one of the ways Capitol marked its promo LP's. Also, on the "Early Beatles" LP: the pressing mark was called an "anvil", which was used at the Scranton, PA factory in the 1950's, uniti it was phased out in favor of the "IAM" in the triangle, the IAM being the union that represented Scranton plant employees.

After that, skip ahead to the Canadian Capitol purple label and slightly later retro rainbow label editions of the entire catalogue. Some counterfeits do have the shadow, but in order to tell if the cover is legitimate, observe the texture of the cover. If the cover is flat and doesn’t seem like a paste over, it’s a fake. If the cover has a bit of a texture and the back shows those flip backs underneath the cover paste on, it’s legitimate

The original inner sleeves for Meet the Beatles were dark blue. I think they changed over pretty quickly. On that topic, it’s not uncommon to see the Pepper inners with MMT albums. They must have been using up old stock or it was an error at one plant.

On the US Rubber Soul, the label has "John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr" under the band name. Was this the same on all the US Rubber Soul pressings, or just the first? Out of interest, I looked at the reproduction of the label on the Rubber Soul CD in the "US Albums" set. It just says "The Beatles." A detail they overlooked? As always, fascinating stuff, Andrew. Looking forward to the next one!

The earliest US copies of Rubber Soul accidentally left out the John, Paul, George, Ringo names; which were quickly added! I have a lovely stereo US Rubber Soul that doesn't have the individual names - it still has 'most' of it's original shrink-wrap even! I picked it up several years ago off Ebay - I'm a UK collector, and when I saw it, I knew I needed to have it!! I think back then - 10 years ago-ish, I only paid around £20, maybe £30 for it! I hate that early stereo mix, but I love the record itself, with it's different 'Capitol' mixes on a few songs... :-)

Andrew, I have the French boxed set in dark green. Has Beatles in Gold lettering along the entire one side. Has a different lp configuration than yours: No. 1, 4 Garcons Dans La Event (Hard Day's Night), Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, Back in the USSR (White Album), Yellow Submarine, Beatles Again (Hey Jude), Abbey Road and Let It Be. Is this a later version?

The US mono albums of Meet The Beatles (with the exception of "I Want To Hold Your Hand and This Boy" which are true mono), The Early Beatles and Help! (exception "Ticket To Ride" true mono) are all fold downs of the stereo mixes. These are not the true mono mixes.

That’s why Capitol was using Duophonic as reprocessed stereo. You don’t see Duophonic name on any Beatles US releases like “Meet the Beatles”, “Second Album”, “Something New”, “Beatles ‘65”, “Beatles VI”, and “Magical Mystery Tour”.
@MarcTheOldMan
@MarcTheOldMan 3 жыл бұрын
@@Musicradio77Network The reason you don’t see Duophonic on The Beatles Capitol stereo albums is because most of the tracks were in true stereo. Capitol only used reprocessed stereo on 17 tracks throughout their catalogue. (2 Meet The Beatles, 3 The Beatles' Second Album, 2 Beatles '65, 2 The Early Beatles, 1 Beatles VI, 1 Help!, 3 Yesterday and Today and 3 on Magical Mystery Tour. Something New was the 1st Capitol album where all the tracks were in true stereo.

Those heavy plastic PVC clear outer jacket sleeves are known to outgas and transfer a 'fog' to the vinyl, best not to keep the vinyl near those. You can google search the problem with them.

I've seen you refer in previous videos to instances where other record companies were often contracted to help press Beatles records due to the high volume (e.g., Decca in the UK). I then picked up a German copy of MMT - it was like what Dorothy felt when she stepped into technicolor in Wizard of Oz - I was totally blown away. What a waste of time it is to collect Capital releases...

I have just seen so many razer cuts on items at stores. Thank you very much for your show it is Great.
