I bought it back when they were promising a free upgrade to 5 when they released it, but the caveat was that the free upgrade expired at the end of the year and it took them another 3 years after that for them to actually release v5. They wont be getting another dime out of me ever.

I moved two years ago from Simplify3D to PrusaSlicer. With PrusaSlicer i got 99% of the quality i had with Simpify3D, but had so much more benefits and options s3d did not have. Even the new v5 does not have all that, what PrusaSlicer has. The live Support stuff is nice, but well... i can paint and wait those 3 sec to get my result, no problem there. Multi-Color in PrusaSlicer is awesome, i love it! The differentiation between material, printer and Filament was done much better in PrusaSlicer. And the biggest plus is the "Send to Octoprint" feature. I love it. I can slice, my printer is ready and woken up, send it to the printer and GO! Sorry, S3d, you ain't gonna get my $40 and strip me down to just one pc at a time.

I’ve found Cura’s interface far easier to use than PrusaSlicer/SuperSlicer (and especially IdeaMaker), even as a beginner three years ago. Ultimately, though, the best slicer is the one that works best for you…except S3D. What all of the modern slicers have over S3D is, you know, actual development. V5 seems to keep relying on features that were already present in V4 (speedy slicing, good print quality, and fast printing) and then added a bunch of 2017-vintage features from other slicers…while asking for 1/3 more money for new users, 100% more money than previous versions for existing users, and with bugs that seem to me to make it impossible to use properly. You can rotate or scale prints but not both? What? I would rather suffer through minute-long slices with Lychee Slicer than spend a king’s ransom on broken, obsolete software that probably won’t even get a bug fix update for another 16 months. I’d also argue that Simplify 3D will only have two kinds of new users going forward: people with more money than sense who are new to 3D printing, and industrial printer buyers who’ve been suckered into getting S3D by their printer supplier (fellow Stacker 3D sufferers, I feel your pain). The only other revenue they have a chance of getting is from existing V4 users with Stockholm Syndrome. If I were to be truly unkind, I would say that V5 is one final cash grab and we’ll never see another update again.

I hope Simplify 3D is listening! I took the plunge for the $60 upgrade because it has been my favorite slicer but I totally agree with you that paying $199 for a single machine license is insane. I hope the get they hint. If they ever go belly up, will the software stop working?

I remember when I first got into 3D printing there were debates almost daily about Simplify3D vs Cura. Over the years the debates slowly disappeared and I thought people were finally smartening up and realizing that spending $200 on a piece of software isn't going to magically fix your printer's problems and you actually have to put in the work yourself. Surprised to hear the company is still around and people are still throwing away $200 for something they can do for free.

As a former S3D user, it actually made a huge difference in my prints. Since you clearly never used it, you really don’t have much room to talk about software fixing issues and needing to put in the work. It was the fact that the slicer itself was far and away better. The prints were cleaner because of the way the files were sliced.

@Dana Williams what a wildly aggressive responsive. Slicers have no effect on print quality, the profile settings do. The default profile settings might be nice, but any real maker would be adjusting them; but I'm sure you already knew that.

Now, keep in mind, i’m only 2 years in, so still learning however, the thing that put me off about that is I’m old school and the thought if I bought in at this price point, I’d have to lay out more cash for the next major upgrade? I did buy my s3d a few years ago at $100 and im debating on spending the 60 for the upgrade. I highly doubt i would spend 200 as a newcomer to s3d. Going to finish watching your review and just take in some more feedback for a bit before dump 60 bucks for the upgrade. I would say that the slicing time is a pretty negligible win. The difference between S3D and Lychee sure, but the 4 and 6 second difference from Prusa and Cura respectively is pretty negligible on a several hour print. In my work flow, the slicing time is never a concerning factor that I can't wait a little for a settings change to take effect and view the output. Maybe others are different but sub 20 or 30 sec they are all the same to me.

I happily paid for the upgrade. Yes, there are issues; however, it is the Slicer that gives me the freedom to print in the "non-traditional" manner that I print. Also, as ModBot said, they don't make hardware, so they need to be supported through payment for their software. I made fun of them on Twitter when there were no updates, I purchased in 2017, but I was also happy to see the post about an actual update coming soon! Most everyone else that wanted an update decided to crap on them, before any reviews were even out, for finally having an update...? Your points are well taken and accurate from what I can tell, I haven't had those issues, but I personally found upgrading from V4 to V5 to be money well spent 🤘🤘

I bought S3D years ago, all the way to 4.1. I won't be upgrading to S3D 5.0, mainly because of the way they abandoned users and went dark. No way, S3D... too little too late.

Not to mention how slow they are at getting anything done, I'll pass on paying for a slicer for now, but at least it's print quality is good which honestly, is the whole point in my book. Having said that, your video put it on my radar which is good, so I'll keep an eye out and hope they make some needed changes soon. I'm very happy to see that you did a brief review on S3Dv5. I started with v4 back then and well, we all know how it went from there. I'm struggling pulling the trigger on the $59 upgrade. The UI still looks outdated (especially without the dark theme), the software is full of bugs, the guys over at S3D seem to provide no response to any of the feedback people provide on KZfaq, etc. The only uglier and less-supported slicer that I've ever seen (and bought (for my Voron)) was the KISSlicer. However: I still consider buying the v5 license because of what you said "The end result just looks better". Do you maybe have a few pictures where we can compare it in a bit more detail? It's the same reason I bought the KISSlicer 2 years ago, where people said, that no slicer available today prints better functional parts then KISSlicer, even though the UI is the worst I've seen in the last 30 years or even longer and support follows the approach "Whenever I feel like coding again but that can also mean I take a few years off because I'm currently sick of coding". Would be interesting how well S3Dv5 would work with the Bambu Lab X1C and if it would be worth going that route at all, as their slicer is just working fantastic out-of-the-box, even with 3rd party filament.

And Prussaslicer, I love it but I'm constantly tweaking settings, switching between nozzle thicknesses between my two main FDM printers disrupts my settings for the other printer. I suspect it's a lot tidier if you have Prusa printers but for now I put up with it, most of my designs are for me and the stuff I sell is low volume, again my designs but I don't market them.

Supports is literally the only reason I have not dumped Simplify3D for one of the other slicers yet. The expansion of the supports to allow me to custom add/remove them is great, but I'm not really seeing a reason to upgrade yet. Those bugs that you mentioned (not retaining rotation/scaling numbers, not properly changing between tools, etc...) are pretty big. If they want to do that "One active machine per license" thing, then they really need to start fixing these bugs and add in tree supports. Since slicing is all I've ever heard anyone saying that they use Simplify3d for, it's pretty important that they add in tree supports. I'm definitely interested in the quality things, like the adaptive layer height and such. That looks super nice.

You mention you’d use PS if it had a similar support feature. PrisaSlicer has a similar paint on support feature and I believe it is superior to S3D’s. PS has brush size controls and fills that make complex models extremely easy to support. It’s been available for at least the past two versions of PS

Looks like they've updated to 5.0.2 now. The Gizmo vs Supports has been addressed. But I don't think the scaling/translation/rotation reset has according to the release notes. The alternative infill patterns have been far too long overdue. But to finally come out and STILL not have tree supports? Shame. That said, I have always found my printing results with S3D to come out better looking than Cura, like you observed here.

Considering to upgade despite the lack of too much progress - one question though before that - will the previous version (4.x here) stay intact on the PC? Got my first version (3.x or even earlier? It just had come out) as an add-on to the E3D BigBox printer. Too bad they grounded that project... :( Cura is so agonizingly slow, starting with the installation taking ages to finish, and never ending using it as a productivity tool. So, please, who can confirm that the previous S3D installation will remain intact and usable? Thanks!

I mentioned on another of your videos recently, but the landscape for FDM slicers is totally different than SLA slicers. That much money - that you'd *assume* would go to development - and they still can't even catch up with us rando's submitting to open source projects. Even outside of the bugs, there's *a lot* of fancy new features in Cura and PrusaSlicer that the S3D team just... doesn't seem to be making an attempt at?

@Uncle Jessy I, like you am an avid Simplify3D user (have been since version 3). I "gambled" and paid the $60 for the v5 license. Once I'd imported my profiles and started using the program, I was quickly underwhelmed with the latest offering. I am however a regular poster of bugs in the forum (DrD) and have found some really interesting bugs. The dev team claims that they're working on fixing the NUMEROUS bugs that us users are reporting (I agree with you that they did next to no QA testing prior to release). Otherwise, I do like the lightning-fast slicing time and the quality of the prints that come off of my printers look amazing (when the slicer doesn't crash at random, lol). Given a bit more time, it'll improve... it's just sad that this latest release took so long and generally pissed off the existing user base (myself included).

Would like to know where to get the dragon model - I've got a gaming machine and I'm curious how well it would perform. That said, most of my needs are simple, I don't really print anything overly complex so Prusa's slicing is basically instant for the types of models I use (mostly gridfinity items).

I upgraded (at the $10 off discount) and agree with your observations (including the klunky Cura interface). S3D manual support placement is a key feature. I have been using v5 and have noticed the print finish especially top layer is much nicer. I've been doing a bunch of uncomplicated practical prints and so far everything I needed v5 to do has worked fine. I'm OG and it's just that I know S3D so well. I can design, slice, and get a print started much faster. After 5+ years of using it I did not mind paying the V5 upgrade fee. Yes it needs a lot of bug fixes and has missing features. I also agree it's not worth a $200 entry fee. For me S3D will continue to be my main slicer with Cura (I need to look at Prusa Slicer) as the go to when S3D is lacking. In my use case (mostly practical prints) S3D is the most efficient slicer path to printing. My main gripe is that I do hope they restore the 2 computer (but only one activated at a time) license feature.

If they can provide some updates/fixes to these issues I agree with you that the $60 fee ain't bad at all for as easy as it is to use over a lot of the other slicers. I do also like the custom hot key addition in v5 that I just recently found. I would also love to see a FULL list of what all the new improvements are that they added.

That resetting back to 100% is one of the reasons I dislike using Chitubox. Yeah, paying $200 for a buggy beta that still doesn't even have half of the features of other slicers isn't worth it. I wouldn't even pay the $60. I know Cura gets a lot of hate, but the level of customization and capability of different settings is well beyond belief for a free slicer, especially once you get used to it and show the hidden settings that are useful. Most other slicers dumb it down way too much in my opinion. I'm sure it can be a bit daunting for people who just want it to slice, but sometimes you need to fine tune settings to print the file properly. Especially depending on the printer. Prusa Slicer does pretty well and I like it as well. Yeah, it's a benefit that simplify 3D renders and slices quickly, but it still appears to be a slicer way behind in the times just with really good support settings that you can use on any other slicer. Anycubic's Photon Workshop loads, runs, and slices especially fast, but most people don't use it because it lacks quality as well but at least Photon Workshop is free.

I don't know what this video is on about. Cura has a great UI, the settings are simple for beginners, with advance search/display for advance users. It's a great gateway slicer for beginners to work their way towards more advance settings. Prusaslicer has some features better than Cura and functions Cura doesn't have, but Cura is the better general purpose slicer. There's no way anyone is making me pay any amount of money given how good both Cura and Prusaslicer are.

I upgraded immediately cause it was the only slicer I was really used to. I got a taste of Cura when I had to wait for S3D to send me a profile for a new Anycubic Mega X I had bought at the time. But I agree, $200 is too much for most newbies and hobbyists! I can no longer recommend S3D to friends at that price. Lackluster, yes considering how long it took getting to v5, and yes PLEASE stop resetting the transforms after each adjustments!

Seems a bit of the same ole same ole. On v4 I think you can use ctrl+L to land a surface on a plate, but I may be remembering poorly. Glad to see someone doing a review of this, looking at the features they added I decided not to push the cash to do an upgrade, so no vid from me. The painting in Prusa Slicer with snug supports has really spoiled me and up until some of the later versions of PS simplify did have better support algorithms, but that is not the case anymore.

I have used S3D to slice some models a while ago (a friend of mine uses the program and was so kind to let me test it out). I can see the appeal with support, but to be honest, I was not overly impressed. Now they ramped up the price with $50 to a whopping $200 (and I don't know if we have to add VAT in Europe, but if so the price is even an insane $242). That makes it even far more unappealing. I mean - I use SuperSlicer, and I got comparable results when I used SuperSlicer and S3D side by side. Yes - Your remark about support is correct, but is that convenience worth that $200 (or $242 I probably have to pay in Europe)? Even if I add the maybe somewhat more comfortable interface it's really not worth the money in my humble opinion. I think the guy's behind S3D made a big mistake with driving up their pricing. If S3D was priced around $20 (max), I think they would sell a LOT of copy's. It would give people some encouragement to give a payed for slicer a chance. But at $200 ($242 Europe) and without even a demo version? I do not think they will attract much new costumers. The price has increased but their seat licensing has gone down. That's also not a plus in my books. On top of that - Their software update record from the past few years is not really what you call stellar (that puts it mildly, because they literally did NOT A SINGLE update in many years). That is very worrying to say the least, an not encouraging for the future. And talking about the future - I think the future of S3D does not look too rosy to be honest.

I feel like there's a strange resistance to pay for software in general in this community...everyone drops tons of money on silly unnecessary mods, but aren't willing to pay for someone's hard work to develop software? I think we all take for granted the amount of work some of these things take. Not saying you should go out and buy the slicer, from what I've seen it's far too little too late...but I'd like to see the community value paying for people's work rather than expecting everything to be free or slamming the price of something that they would easily drop bills for on other arguably useless things. Kind of a tangent from your review but thought it was worth bringing up 😅. Great video!

If they add more tools like MatterControl did, which converts matter control into a Tinkercad with more tools, It would definitively worth the 200usd. Also they need to add Adaptive layers and SlimTree support. Otherwise, pay for something that other slicers already do, that makes no sense.

Cura has a custom supports plugin, but it's not as polished as s3d, which is the only thing going for it; prusa/super slicer has paint on supports but you can't see them until sliced so not as good either, so in a nutshell: 200dls (which is more expensive than before for just one seat instead of 2) is totally not worth it

Wait until the Prusa slicer will be able to visualize support like S3D does. I am sure that will be happening some time in the future. The moment that happens S3D is doomed (if it's not already, because there are probably not nearly enough people that are insane enough to fork out $200 for a slicer). I don't want to be negative, but there are only a few things left that S3D does somewhat better. Is that $200 better? Well - We will see if S3D manage to survive or not. Time will tell...
