I don't mind commercials as long as Tony gets a cut, but I think what the op meant was no long winded intros, please like and subscribe click the bell, a series of apologies etc etc.

Yep, no staged thumbnails of Uncle Tony making goofy faces, no clickbait titles, no stupid music intro, no taking the first five minutes of the video to tell us what he is going to tell us, like some other guys with ewwtube car channels. Cut to the chase with the goods, very workmanlike. Thats why this is my favorite car channel.

I turned wrenches for 25 years. Every single time I got a bad part I wrote “DEFECT” on the box. This cuts down on this mistake.

I know quite a few really good mechanics and every one of them does that. They told me to do the same thing when I got a bad alternator.

With anything I return as defective I slip a note detailing the fault under the item or in the instructions, and back in the days of vinyl I'd write 'Pressing fault' plus an arrow on the label.

I was taught to place two lifters base to base in order to check for crown. This will show up the crown immediately without needing to find a flat surface or a piece of paper. If the first pair are good, then keep one to check all the others against. It's worked for me for over 50 years so far.

Good test didn't think of that but it will double the movement if you stack two good lifters this way easier to tell they are good.

Base of test lifter against straight side of another lifter, so base to side. And you should see the convex shape of the lifter base, not an air gap from an incorrect concave shape or perfectly flat. Also while engine is running, lifters should be spinning (the push rods will spin also), else it's getting chewed up. Tight or lose lifter bores can cause a lifter not to spin, or even heavy lube can as well. While assembling engine, slide cam into place and drop the lifters into their bores, then with no pushrods, spin cam by hand and watch to see if all lifters spin while cam is rotating in normal direction. If not, there may be a problem.

@@johnwilburn Pretty sure you meant a bad lifter will be flat or concave. A good lifter must be convex but of course that's no guarantee it'll stay that way. Super stiff valve springs or spring binding (incorrect lift for springs/perches), wrong type of lube, rust, method, poor quality (heat treatment incorrect, alloy incorrect) bla-bla can wipe out a cam.

And what do you do with the ones that fail inspection? If you don't throw them in the trash they'll probably just get passed around until sold again.

Yeah, I saw that too... Gone are the days of small independent parts stores that had men behind the counter who knew how to look up parts. Whenever I go to a parts store now I look up the parts on line before I even walk in their door.

I'm in my mid twenties and yet I find myself making the dude behind the counter pull out the paper catalogue so I can search for the item myself since their computerized inventory system doesn't account for interchangeable parts across different models half the time. 🙄

I actually like Advance, but any of the chain stores require you to do your own parts searching before you go. If you expect the guy at the counter to know anything you're a fool.

I'm old enough to remember when parts guys actually knew what they were doing. When all these chain parts stores came out and of course they were only paying minimum wage or not much more and actually preferring no experience when employing there workers it put actual competent parts stores out of business! I miss the days of really good parts guys! They could get you anything and they were really knowledgeable about cars. Its just another example of corporate America ruining everything!

Retired at 49 if it’s any consolation it’s not a problem unique to the US, I left the industry in the early nineties when Australia went through exactly the same nonsense.

Robert L. Fallin most of our stuff was actually made in Australia leading up to that period but we didn’t go to Chinese made I think most of it started coming in from Indonesia . I moved on to work for a major German company and everything was made in Germany up to about 3 years ago when they started manufacturing the smaller stuff in China, after 23 years with them I retired earlier this year for medical reasons.

I’ve opened a new starter box and found someone’s old core. I also hate it when they steal hardware out of a box and you get the new package with a missing spring or other missing small parts.

I was trying to order a window regulator. I live in Sydney, Australia. I was contacting a parts store in the U. S. Me: I need a window regulator for a Dodge Avenger. It's a right hand drive vehicle, my drivers side is your passenger side. I need a regulator for a right hand drive vehicle, the drivers window. Clerk: Sorry sir, we don't have parts for that vehicle. ​@@mikemoscato2995 No we don't have muscle cars unless imported directly as classics from US. We do have stuff like Chrysler Jeeps / 330C's or Grand Voyagers etc but hey are very rare. We also now have FIAT-Chrysler economy cars but nothing like the cars on UT's channel; hence why we lurk on this channel to get our fix of straight 6's and V8's. :)

I learned this the hard way years ago - solid lifters have suffered this for a long time. I send in every lifter and cam to be re- ground, surfaced, and then parkerized. This solved my problems entirely... The heat treat and machining on the lifters has been either too hard or soft, then the surface erodes and this takes the cam and lifters out. Spring pressure is variable as well. I break in with single springs only then add in the inner springs (pain in the butt). Finally, full flow oil filtration helps stop break in damage. A newly built engine always has some debris that gets into the oil especially from the cam and lifters. Sorry to say that quality control is poor today and that makes engine building more "challenging." Cheers and best of luck!👍

Worked briefly at a "big chain parts store". Customer bought a new Edelbrock carburetor. We opened the box to put in his core and there was a broken red brick inside. This box had been inventoried for years by the bar code on the outside. If he would have taken this home without looking in it, there is no way he could convince anyone there wasn't a carb in the box.

returned parts are always a problem. especially electrical parts. i told the customers you open it you bought it no returns no warranty except starters and alternators unless our tech looked at it. parts cannon people were terrible. then scammers that would clean the old part and try to pass it off as a defective new part.

Really fascinated by this guys videos. I've been playing around with hotrods since I was 16 (still own my first car, 1968 Chevelle). He does such a great job. Even goes so far as to taste engine oil and can tell you if it's good or not 😂 Love it!

I've had it where my local auto store has checked the parts I'm buying right in front of me at the counter, only to find that somebody slipped them a previous "return" that was clearly rusted, worn, and dirty. At my own store, I've seen the same thing happen, as much as we try to abate it. Cheap asses scamming the store and the next customer who comes along.

I’d say it’s more a case of your own employees selling parts out the back door and putting cores back in the box. When I was 16 I worked at a Nationwise auto parts. It was a common scheme then and probably is today.

Bought a brand fuckin new idle air control valve at Oreilly's one time for way more than I should've paid because of necessity, and waited for it to ship to the store for about 4 days. When it arrived it was a core that had at least seen 100k miles on a beater.

Thank you, This would have saved me some time and a lot of money few years ago... Had a 396chevy that ate two cams in less than 5minutes during/before break in...twice.... I ended up converting to solid roller and didn't have any issues.. But I cam to the same conclusion, I had used the manufacturer and same cam several times no problems... The variable that changed was lifters, and supplier.... " Be attentive, quick check now save time and money later." Thank you for clarifying the exact cause.

I've seen this happen with computers and computer parts at Best Buy. I had a client who purchased a "new" laptop and when they turned it on the first time someone else's data was on the drive. We figured someone returned it for some reason and didn't or couldn't erase their data.

Nah that’s negligence. Malice is “the desire to harm someone; ill will.” So if they don’t *want* or *intend* to affect another person by their actions then it isn’t malicious. If they simply don’t care if it does, if they don’t take due care because it won’t affect them directly, that’s negligence. Negligence is “failure to take proper care over something.” I see what you’re saying, but there is a difference.

I did 15 years running a commercial program for that company. When they do the return in the computer someone clicked "new return" instead of defective. It actually happens a lot with the lesser characters that work in these stores. Especially on the weekend. Also a defect sticker prints. If a guy doesn't sticker them the next guy doesn't know they are defective and then puts them away. This especially sucks when you transfer in parts from another store for a shop that has something torn apart and it comes in used and junk.

Thank you no cigarette, just great advice. Decades ago one of the engine builders I knew used to keep a 'coin' of hardened ground flat steel in his pocket. Whenever they picked up conventional cam followers for a build, every one was opened and placed on the flat and checked. That was in the 70s and 80s. The problem may be worse these days, but it was enough of a problem 40 and 50 years ago, the best guys were aware of it and checked the followers for crown. One other shop we did business with had a grinder/polisher set up to put a specific crown and grit pattern on followers.. even new parts were put on that machine to blueprint them.

As KB10GL stated, it was demonstrated to me that you can take two lifters and put them either base to base, or place the base of one lifter against the side of another to check for the crown. It's amazing how one apparently small issue can result in a catastrophic failure.

I used to cut grass commercially - I remember being in the lawn mower department at Lowe's when I saw a round Kohler engine air filter in a clear package that was clearly bent up. This damage means that the filter must be discarded, as you cannot "bend it back straight" to have it seal properly. So I told a manager about it and told him what I said above here. Don't remember what he said, but a few weeks later, the SAME damaged air filter was put back in stock.... 🙄

I have seen this problem with a parts store with other parts. Thank you for making this video. People have blind trust with large stores not realizing that they seem to be the most likely to do this sort of thing.

Not to go too off-topic, but it still directly relates to this problem: And the following are only 2 examples of problems I've had with Advance in recent years: Walked in & bought 3 U-joints and center support bearing ( 2 piece drive shaft ) for my 2000 Tacoma 4x4. The old ones were nearly 20 yrs old & just starting to "chatter", they were done. Tore it all down & the new U-joints did NOT fit. So BEFORE I returned them, I went to several other places WITH the new U-joints & an old U-joint to make sure I could find the correct ones. NOBODY had them, they all had the wrong ones exactly like the ones from Advance, even though they were different brands & different part nu's, they claimed to fit my truck, NO THEY DID NOT. Had to order em from the Toyota dealership who raped my ass AND they had to have them shipped in. I was down & out of work for 4 days over that crap. Got up & running, returned the new parts to Advance & told them the problem. All 3 KIDS at the counter weren't even paying me any attention & I got my refund. I guarantee you, they put em right back in inventory, to sell to the next victim. The computer said they were "the correct U-joints for my specific truck". Months later, I called the same Advance to make sure they had the exact SERIES 29 deep cycle marine battery I wanted online. The KID said: "NO, but we have this one that's the same thing." I looked it up online myself, it was a SERIES 24, TOO SMALL for my boat. I told the kid over the phone. He said: "Well that's all we have". So I called a different Advance and YES, they had the series 29 in stock, so ordered it online ( for discount ) from their store. I drive there, they have the battery, but my online order was CANCELLED. After much investigation by the manager, he found out the other store I called originally cancelled my order!!! HOW?!? I also HAD TO go to that other store to get my debit card refunded. They were expecting me, and I was NOT a happy camper. I walk in, THERE'S THE CORRECT series 29 battery on the counter waiting for me. The KID had taken a return from someone else with an entirely different battery. He turned on his computer & the very first "battery" that popped up WAS MINE.......from the OTHER store......and he cancelled the damned order. Didn't even bother to look at THE ORDER NUMBER for the other customer returning an entirely different type of battery, he just saw MY order & cancelled. I drove around like an idiot all over town over this CRAP. Have a few other bad stories involving them too.......but these 2 stories are enough. I am DONE with Advance & others such as Auto Zone. They opened a new NAPA near me.......and I haven't had any more problems at all. The KIDS they at are hiring at these big chain parts stores might as well be working at Walmart.......and I'm not even joking.

The incompetence is not just at places like these parts stores. You will find this even at car dealers. Friend of mine replaced the steering rack on a mid-2000's Chevy truck. But of course he doesn't have an alignment rack so he takes it to the Chevy dealer which is close by to have the alignment done. Couple months later he was working on that truck again something unrelated. Happens to look down through the engine bay and notices something weird. The accordion-shaped bellows that goes from the steering rack out to the end of the inner tie rod. It's all twisted up like a pretzel. so he gets under there to look and tries to figure out why it's like this it wasn't that way when he put the rack on there. He looks at the other side it's exactly the same way the rubber bellows is all twisted up like a pretzel. for some reason when they did the alignment at the dealer the technician didn't bother to loosen the strap that holds that flexible bellows tight against the steering rack and so while he was twisting the tie rod ends to get the alignment done it was twisting up that rubber bellows. And he did this on both sides? He had to have been fighting the rubber bellows trying to twist back the entire time he was doing the alignment adjustment. All he needed to do was loosen the clamp on one side of that bellows and it would have slipped around as he rotated the tie rod. They took it back to the Chevy dealer pointed out to the service manager and he had absolutely no explanation. The tech who did this was not a new tech he had a good reputation for knowing what he was doing. So we don't know whether it was just pure laziness or whether he did it on purpose because they didn't get the job to change the rack also? Eventually that bellows would have failed then probably caused early failure of that rack. The story that happened personally to my mother, she had a Toyota that she had serviced regularly at the local Toyota dealer. Never had any bad service or so she thought. Although as dealers are it's always a bit more expensive. She called me to tell me that her car was stuttering and not running right, asked me if she should take it to the dealer I told her yes because I couldn't get there to look at it for a few days. They call her and tell her that it's a failed ignition coil, and it's going to be $600 parts and labor. This is a coil on plug setup on this car. she calls me and asked me if that price is fair and I told her absolutely NOT!!. I went on RockAuto took a look at the denso ignition coil the same one the dealer will use and it was $60. I told her to wait I'll take a look at it and do it myself because that's a total rip off When I get home to look at the car, the first thing I did was verify that the ignition coil was the culprit. It was saying misfire on cylinder one. Well it's just a simple engine cover, 10 mm bolt to remove the coil and the electrical connection. I swapped coils from cylinder one and cylinder two, but the misfire stayed on cylinder one. Which tells you it's not the stupid ignition coil. It ended up being the fuel injector had failed. That took me all of 35 minutes to replace. The injector was about $150 . But the fact is it was a super simple diagnosis to prove that the ignition coil was or was not The fault. The technician at the dealer had simply hooked up the computer saw misfire on cylinder one and made a diagnosis without bothering to actually double check. They would have tried charged my mother $600 and it wouldn't have fixed the problem. Absolute total incompetence. At that point they no longer repaired my mother's car for anything. I took over all the maintenance on her vehicle because of a lack of trust at that point.

oh man, dealerships and shade tree local garages...I've known dealership mechanics who quit when told, during repairs, to "play with" another part so the customer would return. But at least you're getting OEM parts and someone who is, theoretically, trained to deal with your specific car, and any outstanding recalls. My local mechanic? always uses the cheapest parts, and marks them up 100%. I swapped the serp belt on my father's truck with the "money back guarantee" belt, and later it flunked emissions so the local mechanic tuned it up. Well, according to his records, the serp belt was never swapped, so he took it on himself to toss out the belt he saw, and put on a new one. a few thousand miles later, its squeaking--because he put on the "selling this car tomorrow" cheapest serp belt sold. So i had to buy another top of the line belt to slap on.

@@juliogonzo2718 "SIGH".........Due to my comment being so lengthy to begin with, I didn't bother taking the time to say how we eventually wound up doing that, and NONE of these damned places had the correct size u-joint. But all of their computer's inventories claimed to. Come to find out, my particular 2000 Tacoma 4x4 regular cab ( NOT an "SR5" ) 3RZ-FE motor/auto trans w/factory tow package has 3 u-joints on the split drive shaft ( different than a "2 pc shaft" ) that are unlike any other u-joint sizes used on ANY of the other Tacoma's, even from the same year. But that doesn't get those shops off the hook, because my truck is now 20 yrs old & tens of thousands of them exactly like mine are still on the road, so I CAN'T be the first victim to this bullshit. This is why I had to go to the dealership & pay a king's ransom, to buy 3 freakin' u-joints.......of all things. Good u-joints though, mine lasted 19 yrs & 350,000 miles, and I work the shit out of this little truck. But you can bet the farm that thousands of other owners of trucks just like mine were given the same runaround.

Tony, I've been a partsman for over 30 years and have warranty returns mishandled numerous times....i.e. defect return credited to the customer as a new return. And the same thing st the warehouse. One of my best friends is like you, a master engine builder. He showed me another way to check the crown on a lifter. Place the bottom of one to side of another below the oil port. He said the sides should be machined true. Thank you very much for you videos. Molar or No Car.

Now that you have highlighted a parts store mistake that seems to be something we all have in common worldwide, have you made any headway into figuring out what the original problem was? Or is it a return mission to the parts store to find one of the incorrectly machined lifters and compare that instead of the secondhand unit.

As a parts seller with one of those national chains, specializing in classic motors, THANK YOU for this. I verify my stocks every time a customer needs an item, but I had not thought to do the crown test. Stupid in hindsight, especially since I'm the one that sketches out the break-in plans for my customers, but I guess I'm allowed to be fallible once in a while. I'll be adding this and a few other choice items to my new engine checklist.

Good video. It shows how poorly trained some counter men are. It could have been an honest mistake, or a new employee who hasn’t been trained, or laziness. Thanks for brining that to our attention. In 20 years in the Auto Parts Industry I’ve seen a lot of stuff that just shouldn’t be. When I worked for Federal Mogul, they got a contract with Big A Auto Parts. As you know Tony, that is a national chain like NAPA. They had several warehouses across the US, and when they entered into business with FM we had to do a stock change out. Those are always a pain in the ass to deal with. I’ve been on the other side of change outs numerous times, but this was the first time I worked for the manufacturer. The company needed to get the cohangeofer done in a timely manner and they had no idea how they were going to accomplish that. When I found out what was going on I suggested that employees from all of our uses get select to change out one of their warehouses. Working for their 1-800 tech line I volunteered to go to Gallpolis Ohio to help with that change out. I was sent to work on changing out engine parts, Tony, I’ve never seen such a damn mess in my life! They had sold .030 over Chevy 350 pistons from several different set of pistons. They sold Silvolite, TRW, Sealed Power, silvolite, KB etc. one manufactures box might contain 3 of one grand, two of another and one of something else. They had single pistons in different manufacturers. I had to try to put complete sets in one box, partial sets in another two or three boxes etc. The there were different cam manufacturers, several different grinds in a box that was supposed to contain another brand’s products. I was there 7 days and barely got the job done on time. We were supposed to go home Sunday Morning and we had to delay our flight in order to get the job done. The worst part of the whole situation was that they had brought our employees from all over the us to get the job done. Because things ran over, the employees from Kentucky had to take a later flight as well, but there were no phones in the town they we from. These people had no way to contact their families to tell them of the delay, and no way to get a ride home once they arrived at the regional airport they were flying into. And the funniest thing of the entire week we were there was this giant warehouse only had four or five warehouse employees of their own. Friday afternoon someone got on the intercom and called for Opie and Peewee to come to the office. I can see how easily something like your situation could be possible. Good luck in the future!

Being an employee of NAPA I can say that we have a check-in system when parts are returned so this can't happen. People avoid NAPA because the cost is a little higher but I'm telling you guys you're almost always going to do better paying a little more at NAPA.

Not too bad with Napa Canada, yeah some parts are a little more but for the most part, filters, wipers, aftermarket lights/mirrors aren't bad, we use another company for front end components/ brakes, for some reason they break the bank at Napa, 157$ for a rear rotor on 2004 f550 plus 60$ for a seal, vs our other guy 80$ for rotor, 40$ for seal

I managed a parts store for many years a couple of times in my life. this type of thing would happen at least a half dozen times a year. if not more. Over 90 percent of the time, it is folks bringing back parts for core or to new workers, or workers that just don't CARE, and those workers returning the cores the wrong way back into the store system. Then when they do there returns/ core split those parts get put back onto the shelf by accident. Or worse yet . These parts get sent back to the warehouse as good returns and then get sent out to another store some place else. Then that other STORE or workers get the blame. The next 9 percent is from cheating customers or workers that are trying to get one by the system. The last 1 percent is from the manufacture getting something wrong. usually when this happens. there is a huge recall on a line of parts. Because even the manufactures have to train in new workers sometime. and there will be a learning curve. One more thing that can happen is that sometimes you get folks that are not sure what part they need, so they buy lots of parts and bring back what they don't need. Well sometimes when you have all those parts out of the boxes trying to fit them......Well they can tend to get into the wrong boxes. and then the same thing happens when they get returned. So as Tony said. please as a buyer do your part as an engine BUILDER. and LOOK at your parts. and if you are a store worker. Please take the time to LOOK at your returns. I bought plugs once at a chain store, told the guy exactly which ones I needed and how many. He literally shamed me for asking for 5 plugs. First of all, what the fug is it to you guy, maybe I wanted a spare? Anyway he said "let me know when you find that 5th cylinder" and I said "its right next to the other 4... its a 5 cylinder engine" to which he replied "there is no such thing" and I just stared at him for a good few seconds, turned around, walked out of the store and got in my Volvo S60.

A more experienced person knows when to follow the script and when to deviate from it. I think half of the problems I've had getting support comes CSRs blindly and rigidly adhering to a script. I recently had to book transports for 13 consecutive day. When I called the CSR told me "Our policy is that we can only book 2 transports per call. " Me: Uh, but I need to book 13 transports." Another fantastic (depending on how you want to look at it) example of why you never trust parts, regardless of where they came from. The last engine I built was actually a dirt bike engine (KX250f), and most would think on an OE spec rebuild, the something it's just a 4 or 5 hour job.. and in terms of raw assembly, it was probably less than that. However, it terms of measurements, check part specs against the parts they will live with within the engine, it ended up being closer to a 2 day job. I only found 2 issues, luckily. They included the wrong circlips in the top end kit (They may have worked, but wasn't worth risking), and one of the crank bearings was 0.002 too thick per spec, however this didn't make a difference and was left alone.

In the 80's we used to just buy lifters from the parts store and drop them on used cams and vise versa in our hot rods and daily drivers. Rarely had an issue. I once bought a big block Mopar truck with a broken cam. (Literally broken at the last two cylinders ) Pulled a used cam out of an old 383, slid it in with 16 lifters from whitlock auto and drove the truck for years. Did the exact opposite with a 305 firebird with the soft cam. Pulled a stock cam out of my friends 350 skylark and slid in a Herbert RV cam and reused the lifters. One would call those actions nuts these days.

I’m breaking in a cam this week and I’m already stressed!! I did actually look for the crown, they all had them. Summit brand lifters (which I’ve had good luck with) and a Comp cam... 🤞🏼 And to UT’s point, that kind of stuff happens not just at auto parts stores but also at the big box, home improvement stores. Malicious...I don’t know about malicious but lack of regard for the customer, absofuckinglutely . It’s bad enough we’re up against off shore garbage, but when the stores are re-shelving returns it costs us a lot of time and money. I’m looking at my bedroom ceiling fan that I got 90% of the way installed and didn’t have all of the hardware, then it dawned on me, I should’ve been more aware of 2nd layer of packing tape when opening the box 🤦‍♂️

This is one of those times where I gotta recommend buying a better name brand. Yeah, there might only be two lifter manufacturers, but that means they’re contracted by companies (like sealed power) to make lifters to a certain spec, with a certain QC. There’s only a handful of peanut butter manufacturers but JIF beats the shit out of Walmart brand peanut butter every day. Also, when you return automotive parts that are bad, sharpie “BAD” on all sides of the box; that’s the only way to ensure this doesn’t happen.

@@robertclymer6948 Hydraulic lifters with the oil chamber, there are several parts inside such as plunger, return spring, check ball with spring/valve. A column of oil occupies valve train slack, for essentially zero lash. If adjusted too tight, plunger bottoms in lifter and valves in cylinder head never close or may cause valve to collide with piston face. So pay attention to lifter plunger pre-load, I shoot for about 0.020 thou or so, you can get a bit more but I find 0.020 works well. All other lengths must be correct as well, of course. As far as break-in, 2,000 RPM at startup for 20 minutes, this keeps cam drenched in oil to avoid scuffing the lifter/cam interface while the parts settle (Patrick Fitzjohn). Personally, I set my idle as high as possible but usually under 1,000RPM so to keep as much oil as possible slinging up onto the cam and oil pressure high enough to hopefully avoid starvation.

Autoparts stores, chain or otherwise have been doing this as long as I have been working on cars. The people behind the counter have no idea what something should look like so they put it back on the shelf cause they think it looks fine. We can tell who you got them from by the receipt 😊 Can't trust that parts at the part store are new and not returns. I've always bought cam/lifter kits myself.

Very good info Tony! I build engines on a production line roughly 10 a week for over 10 years now. Be surprised some of the stuff you see!

Had one cam/lifter failure in over fourty years of building motors with flat tappet cams. I was devastated! What did I do wrong? Did I not break it in properly, etc. Went back to my machinist a week or so later to check on some more work we were doing, and told him about my failure. He says "Check this out" as he slid a piece of paper across his desk for me to read. The paper was a notice being sent to machine shops regarding the removal of zinc and other anti-wear additives from most engine oils; my particular oil, which I had used for decades, was on the list. He told me I wasn't the only builder suddenly experiencing cam/lifter failure. Eased my concerns somewhat, but a BIG lesson: always ensure your break-in oil has anti-wear additives, even if you run a supplement such as GM EOS, or whatever. This was over a decade ago, but I've never lost another cam/lifter...yet. Be aware guys; check EVERYTHING!

@@patriot9455 I agree.but who thinks to look at the bottom of a" new" lifter? I think this may have happened to me a few years ago on a bbc 468. I lost 2 cams in a row and I know I did everything right.

last year I got a power steering pump from a well known chain for my Corvette. I put it on and it started making noise right off the bat. I went to the sore where I got it they said no problem bring it back. we will give you another one. So I did and got another one and within 30 miles it started making noise. Again it took it back and got another one. This one was better it lasted a week I take it back and asked the manager about it and he said " oh yes we have had a lot of problems with them" I just got my money back and bought it somewhere else. Some one of the three had filled my rack with metal . I had flushed the system each time before putting a new pump on. but now my rack and pinon is leaking all over the place. So I go back to the store that I got the pumps at and talk to the manager again he says yes that's happen a lot. I ask what are you going to do about it. He say find the one you want and give me the quoted price and we will just give you the money for it. That's fine but don't you sell them I say and he says yes but the are mad eby the same people who make the pumps and we have had problems with them as well. I got a quote and they paid for it plus shipping since I got it on line. This national chain was selling parts they knew was bad and just kept replacing them . Thanks for letting me vent But these big chain don't care about you or your car

I think we all sometimes assume that the parts we buy are good quality. I've found that when the price goes down, the part is more likely going to have an issue. I think this is motivating suppliers to cut costs... and "quality" , of course, is not cheap. Having a NAPA store nearby is a blessing. If I'm doing a repair or upgrade myself, I'm already providing the labor for free, so it rarely makes sense to buy cheap parts. Quality parts = Less issues and frustration

I gather that he had returned the part due to it being defective. getting it back is an issue with carelessness at the parts store. at least that is how I saw it.

@@blair79bear38 I am told that flat tappet lifters are no longer a good quality part. Yes, sometimes ok, but most of us builders are just not going to chance it.

This is what happens when you get a kid who watched the fast and furious series and all of a sudden knows everything about cars (but your car) and drives fast past a sports car on a busy street, then brags about how his honda just beat a mustang.

Can't tell you how many times I've bought parts wrong part in the box with the correct numbers on it also! Always check everything before leaving the store is what I've learned, this vid just reinforces that thought!
