We drop in on the king of patina to check out his not-so-pristine collection of Funny Cars, Dragsters and Gassers from the glory days of Drag Racing. A place where nothing is museum quality but everything is cool.

Whenever I see videos of old school drag cars I'm always left with two impressions. One is the amazing ingenuity of early hot rodders, and the second is they were all crazy.

Yup... making a pass down the drag strip with my nuts riding on the differential makes me nervous just thinking about.

Crazy as in Don Garlits, Considered the father of drag racing, he is known as "Big Daddy" Swamp Rat fame. to drag racing fans around the world. A pioneer in the field of drag racing, he perfected the rear-engine Top Fuel dragster, an innovation motivated by the loss of part of his foot in a dragster accident. The car that revolutionized Top Fuel racing in 1971 was Swamp Rat 14, the rear-engine design he didn’t invent but certainly perfected. It was his innovative response to the 1970 accident at Lions Drag Strip at Long Beach, California, that had severed a portion of his right foot (which couldn’t be restored because an emergency worker accidentally slammed it in the ambulance door).

@@travispeoples that is the very reason i never assembled a dragster, was because of that design, and the idea of my nuts riding on top of a ring gear just makes me freak out, somethings need to be left in tact

Its almost natural that you two should meet. I have followed both of you since my Tube viewing began and you both make me proud to have you represent our Tennessee car scene. Y'all's knowledge of old vehicles is a treasure. Too bad most kids today are convinced they can't learn anything unless Google says it's so but listening and watching my elders has served me pretty well.

What a great episode!!! A Very cool segment that Truely reminds us all of what was happening in the Hot-Rod scene from the mid 50's till the mid- late 70's... Extremely cool... What makes this so interesting is the proprietor (Tommy Lee Byrd, and his Father) took the time to find out what the history is and identify all the pieces that they have there... True gold to anybody who treasures the Nostalgic relics from the past....

Cool connection to Larry Stewart. Used to rummage through his yard in the late 70's when I had 64 Impala SS and he had many, many cool cars. Found out later that he matched raced pretty successfully with the Stone, Woods and Cook Willy's in the 60's too. There is some old footage or photos of that car at the long closed Riverside Raceway outside of Nashville. Great history lesson!

You mentioned Old dragstrips, Eastern NC has two, Kinston drag strips, Kinston is still open, it was 1/4 mile for years, not sure if it is changed or not, but one that is super interesting is Bridgeton Drag strip north of New Bern, it was innovative in that from the begginning the two lanes were separated by a patch of grass almost three lanes wide. Still side by side racing, but years ahead of its time in safety! Now there are several more drag strips in eastern NC, these are the two I remember from my childhood. I seen a car at Kinston had a Harrier jet engine ( I can't remember if it was from Cherry Point or Goldsboro but some of the local military guys built it from spare parts on the base) Bridgeton dragway was where I promised to never pay to watch 1/8 mile racing again, huy had a '76 chevy wagon with 400 motor and auto transmission, he won street class going 60mph in the 1/8th, but to his credit, he ran the same e/t every time.

It reminded me of when I was a kid in are around 69 or 70, my neighbors oldest son had a mid 60's el camino that he raced. He use to ask me to kinda steer it while he towed it behind his 69 SS el camino, and since he was flat towing it with a short bumper attached tow bar it didn't track real well. So in exchange for my valued assistance saving many front tires from being scrubbed off, and the steering locking to one side or the other due to having to turn sharper than the car could correct itself. Then having to get out twist the wheel back into center position in order to be able to go down the road again. I use to get to help work on the car/truck, exactly never been sure where exactly el caminos fit into the big picture. That, and free trips to all kinds of drag racing events until I was probably 8 th grade. Then Frankie got married, and hot rods left my life, until I got legal age to drive myself. Frankie never got back into racing to my knowledge, and I'm not even sure of whereabouts he's living now. That was a very long time ago for both of us, and I myself have moved away from the area where I grew up. But man does that collection of mixed matched pieces of old hot rods bring back memories from times of growing up in that era. The N. Texas area around Dallas Ft. WORTH had a hot rod era all its own, because only one track from back then even exists to this day, and that's Yellow Belly over in Grand Prairie, Texas. It never got the big name racer's back in the hay day, but they still bracket race, grudge races, and every day drivers of all kinds race there still. But all the big tracks are long gone, although there is Ennis, which has big time racing going, and several 1/8th mile tracks within easy driving distance around nowadays.
