I'd be lying if I said I ever sat there with my American flag cheering for Roddick. But I always felt so bad for him against Federer. I remember one U.S. Open where he served about as good as I have ever seen a human serve, and I don't think he got a set off of him. But the '09 Wimbledon final takes the cake. He really, really deserved that one. And it would have completed his legacy. About the only time I have been more gutted for a guy who wasn't, like, a personal favorite of mine, was a couple weeks later, a few hundred miles to the north, when Tom Watson barely missed out on winning The Open Championship at age 59. What might have been for both men.

I remember watching that match live. Andy outplayed Roger that day through and through. Roger's serve kept him in the match until the fateful end. Pretty sure that final broke Andy's will because he never really seemed to recover.

That's what people keep saying about Roddick. But Djokovic and Nadal showed up and were able to beat Roger here and there. Roddick just wasn't good enough. Still the best American after Agassi retired though.

Mn B I’ll tell you. I am a tennis coach in the USA, I’ve had the opportunity to work along 1 junior players from my state and even a kid ranked as high as 4 in the nation. The problem is a couple reasons in my eyes. Number one tennis just isn’t as popular here because of basketball, football, baseball. Tennis comes maybe 5-6 most played sport. Everywhere else in the world tennis is top 2 if not top 3 played. Also the kids don’t seem to have the same work ethic as kids from Europe, South America and Australia for example. It’s a shame really, I would practice with high level players running down any ball I could and the coaches of other players would say why don’t you act more like me and run balls down. Also we need more red clay courts here so the kids can have a different type of skill added to there game. We have mostly hard courts, the green clay that is normal here isn’t the same as red and plays completely different so when these kids get in red clay they can’t figure out how to excel on it

Yeah, people always seem to rag on Andy for only winning one Slam. They seem to forget that he was the runner-up in 4 more Grand Slam finals. No small feat. He was a Federer away from adding more trophies to his legacy. I still love the guy and followed his career from start to finish. Am still a fan of his.
