The spirit system is really something to look into if your a beginner or advanced heli pilot looking to advance their training.

It works really well. The only thing I don't really care for is movement while in position hold. But the hard deck and RTH work great.

Love to see one of these on a 500-600 size scale heli. Hoping this is more reliable than the H1, but I have the old GPS receiver, so the new Glonass one is supposed to be better. Hope you do a comparison on both the spirit and H1 John. Great video.

You guys have the BEST videos! I'm serious. Very clear and excellent description of the model. I never tried a helicopter. Unfortunately I got a ride in a Med Vac to the hospital in Pittsburgh but never flew a model. I don't know if everyone would want this but I wish they made a life flight version of a helicopter. Only because I got an 80 mile transport in one. I mostly fly eflight scale planes but these look interesting also. I like to fly scale not too much into tricks. I enjoy loops, rolls, and inverted but that's as far as I take it and I know that's not scale flying but it's fun once in awhile.

Hello John, you can also have a look to flying H1 gyro. Allowing some auto modes, position hold, like rth, auto landing, circles, 8, full assisted inverted, but also usual 3D mode. The rth is amazing, you can put your tx on the ground, and let full auto rth and landing including motor off. Position hold is also impressive, doesn't move at all, even going to auto landing if battery voltage comes too low.

Spirit has a great rescue that takes muscle memory to utilize it in extreme 3d flying. The hard deck is okay for beginners but its not that good for smack 3d flying where most of your flying is very low. I set it at 2 and 3 meters and my flying the heli will blow right thru hard deck and smack the ground before hard deck can do its thing..rescue acro on a switch is the way to go. Younjust need train to hit the switch

Isn't it a bit confusing if "position hold" is switched on and the heli almost is not moving if you give even full cyclic. I am still new to collective pitch helis and I fly them fully manually only - I even eliminated "self level" from my model setups. probably would get completely confused if the behavour of my heli would completely change on the flip of a switch. But for sure it's a very interesting experiment with the hard deck saving you from crashes!

The heli does move in position hold with cyclic, but it is subdued. Whenever I get a new FBL I spend quite a bit of time testing different modes to see how the developers of that unit implement their modes. I don't think position hold is unusual on this. Let go of the sticks, the heli stops where it is. Seems a little like cruise control on a car. When I take my foot of the gas and brake, the car holds it speed.

I think now that I have the modes mostly worked out, I'll spend some time flying it and refining the config first. But this is a good idea and I probably will do it.

You've just identified why I've spent so much time on this. I don't mind putting a helicopter together and getting it flying, but after a crash, it's kind of annoying how much work needs to go into them to get them airworthy again. A minor crash can cost $150 easy. So these failsafe systems have a certain attractiveness when it comes to helicopters. Even if they aren't 100% flawless, if they can save 50% of the dumbthumb crashes--it would easily pay for itself.

Can it be switched between 3D mode and GPS position hold? Many FC is advertised able to do but actually it is not 3D mode but just a mild manual mode, which means they use the same set of PID parameters as GPS position hold mode, very sluggish. They do not switch between two sets of PID profiles. Typical one is Flywing H1.... not 3D mode as advertised at all, just mild manual mode.

Im in the process of rebuilding my old trex600nsp and converting it to fbl...in your opinion would the spirit 2gt be a good pairing for a nitro machine...if not do you have any recommendations?

I have no experience with IC helis, but I don't know why the Spirit wouldn't work. Sorry I can't be of more use, but I'd rather say I don't know than to give bad advice.

When altitude limit is enabled--it won't go below. We've tried over and over. So I don't believe it's misleading one bit.

Meh I'm sure I'm not alone , point of Cp helis is having full control not turning it into a drone. This erases many aspects of the learning process taking some of the fun out of it.

There is nothing fun about crashing or wasting money on repairs. And this setup does not reduce control. Every safety can be turned off. This thinking is just dated and obsolete. You probably didn’t like anti lock brakes when they came out either.

I agree with you 100% RCVR. I’m tired of these heli pilots crying about gps or any safe mode on helicopters, if you don’t like it just don’t buy it!
