TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Is going straight to college the quickest route to success for high school graduates? Genevieve Morgan, author of Undecided. Navigating Life and Learning After High School, says “why rush it?” In her talk “Undecided” Morgan explores our societal attitudes towards entering college immediately after high school and provides alternative avenues for those who may want to delay the time and financial commitment that can come with a 21st century higher education.
Genevieve Morgan is a writer and editor living in Portland, ME. She has authored several illustrated non-fiction works, as well as written or contributed to various published books for corporate clients, among them Borders, Williams-Sonoma, Starbucks, Smith & Hawken, and Gymboree. Her most recent work is Undecided: Navigating Life and Learning after High School (Zest Books 2014) and The Fog of Forgetting (Islandport Press/2014), book one in her new adventure-fantasy trilogy, The Five Stones. She is also the host of the cable interview TV show, Between the Lines. The second volume of the trilogy, Chantarelle, will be released in 2015.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I have the inverse problem: too much things intetest me... The bad news is: all of them are completely unrelated to each other, and the things that interest (and I love) the most are the most financially unsure and risky... And I'm running out of time...and right now I'm stydying something that I don't even know if I'd want to continue, because I discovered that maybe it is among the things that I DO NOT LIKE...

I know this video is 5 years old, but I happened to stumble across it. I am not religious, but it sort felt like the universe put out this video to me. I am an undeclared freshman student .I've always been i credibly stressed about my major because my interests in the humanities, history, art, and stuff don't really fit the job market. So like many students, I am at this cross road of choosing a job I tolerate with good security or something risky but I love. To my surprise, the woman talks about Maine. I am from Maine and it felt sort of comforting to hear this advice from a local person's TED Talk that by coincidence, landed in my recommended list

Still not certain what it is I want to do quite yet, but I'm working out my options! Honey, it's okay. Take deep breaths. I am 21 and I am still trying to figure things out and it's okay if you graduate college later than 22! I know tons of people who did that! COVID-19 made me rethink a lot of things If anything, I highly recommend going to community college first before you transfer over (It saves money and that's what I am doing) and try to take a "flexible" major at a cc before you transfer over to give you more options to explore figure things out from there. Try new things, do your research, and try talking to people. You will figure things out! You are still young! :)

I am 21 and my 8 months of volunteer end in two months (31 august 2021). Still I am not sure what I want to do. But I kind of realize that it is okay and that I just have to do something. Maybe I don’t need dreams or goals, just do stuff everyday. Maybe I find something in myself I don’t want to quit doing but I can not force myself to find something. If I stop searching, things might come to me. I am very stressed none the less. Most of the time I feel like not having time left to make a decision. I am not 18 anymore, I am 21. But what does it matter? Maybe I am ready with 22 and happy with the decisions I made. I don’t regret doing this volunteer and I won’t regret it if I do an other year. Because I am doing something and learning how to life. Getting away from false friends. From weed and speed. Saying yes to life and getting out of bed every morning. Every morning! This is a huge achievement for me. Being sensitive to everything around me. emptying my cup before I can fill it again. Making love, teaching kids, swim in the lake, laugh with people I like. Maybe I will be on the bottom when everything ends. But I will know myself better and I will stand up straight. Look people into their eyes. Respect my needs. Okay at this point I am writing this comment for myself I have to stop.

Thinking about the future is the scariest thing ever and constantly looming over me.

I don’t care for the ideology that you should lower your standards,expectations or goals for yourself with the justification that others do it too. I mean it’s nice to hear that you’re not alone but I just think if you want to accomplish something, you should do it without thinking about what others are doing and focus on your own aspirations. Everyone has different limits and paths in life, but I don’t think you should base your future on the standards that others hold themselves to. Saying “I failed my math test but my friend did too, so maybe it was just a hard test” shouldn’t be the norm. Maybe you should push yourself harder. Something coaches say a lot when practicing for a game is “Who wants it the most? The teams you’re competing against are practicing twice as hard as you are right now” and I learned a lot from that statement. Not trying to say everyone should be super focused and never take a break, but my point was that everyone should go at their own pace, and not the pace of others. Anyways, just a thought. I also understand not everyone has to have the same opinion about things so if you disagree that’s fine too.

So much pressure is on me because my 3 siblings failed to attend college and I am my parents’ last hope. question: do you guys embrace the "road less traveled" or do you feel pressure to follow a crowd when deciding your major? I feel like a lot of students become insecure when factors such as parents and financial barriers interfere with your college major decision. For example: If you were to come from a family of business owners, but were passionate about art, would you follow your passion? Or would you continue the family business because it's what's expected of you?
@No44778
@No44778 4 жыл бұрын
I think that really depends on the family. My mother has been very clear that I am free to do whatever as long as I'm happy and yes, as long as I can support myself at some point. Unfortunately I think its much harder to figure out what you want to do. The road less traveled is definitely worth going down if you know thats what interests you. Studying the "smart" choice will not make you happy Is that a decision you are in right now? Want to share?

It may seem shallow and yes money isn't everything, but having that financial burden out of the way helps you chase what your true dreams are. Look into concurrent enrollment. Create a monthly plan of each scholarship you want to apply for once you hit tenth grade. Apply to them! You'd be surprised how many people are too lazy to apply. Research online classes or ask about classes you can test out of. You really won't understand college requirements unless you call the college and ask. Take SAT and ACT seriously. It doesn't matter what your GPA is if your scores are too low. I should know. I only got a three thousand dollar scholarship even though I had straight A's all through high school. Look into certifications or develop skills over your high school years. You won't know what classes to really take until you decide a major and narrow down what colleges you want to go to. Most importantly, deep breath. Don't panic. Consider a break between high school and college if you're already burnt out in high school. Know that college isn't as stressful as it sounds so long as you are organized.

going undecided is very bad idea. i dont know you but it will so much better if you pick the damn major from the beginning. even if its comunnity college you will loose money by going undecided for a long time. i did the mistake of not choosing the major and got 'hit by a train'. after i was done with the cc i transferred to the university and obviously what i ended up choosing as a major did not add up to any classes i took at cc. it was my BIG mistake , i regret to death for not declaring major its haunts me everyday.i loost soo much money and time plus i am an international student.

@@jiya2027 well, I went to a community college for this year and am taking pre requisites and next year I’m staying at the community college and will be doing a radiologic technology program. I’m still so iffy about it but my mother said to just give it a semester and see how I like it.

@@kaitlyn2342 Good for you. Community college is almost free here in Kentucky - so it's great to just try a few things and see if it sticks. I like that we have the students do some career research in a class at the beginning - so they have an idea of what is out there.
